This document summarizes Direct Relief's emergency response efforts in Haiti following the 2010 earthquake. It provided over $38.5 million in emergency medical assistance to 40 healthcare providers in Haiti. Direct Relief established an in-country warehouse to help manage supplies and support healthcare facilities. It is also committing $2 million to strengthen Haiti's rehabilitation capacity by helping establish prosthetics and orthotics centers. Direct Relief is working with local groups and using mapping to enhance its response efforts.
This Thematic Paper is part of a Toolkit for Project Design (Livestock Thematic Papers: Tools for Project Design) which reflects IFAD’s commitment to developing a sustainable livestock sector in which poor farmers and herders might have higher incomes, and better access to assets, services, technologies and markets.
The paper indents to be a practical tool for development practitioners, project designers and policymakers to define appropriate livestock development interventions. It also provides recommendations on critical issues for rural development and also possible responses and actions to encourage the socio-economic empowerment of poor livestock keepers.

Launching an ePreferred Approval Plan
Presented on: November 4, 20011
by: Anne-Marie Breaux, YBP Library Services, Nancy Gibbs, Duke University and Aisha Harvey, Duke University
In the fall of 2010, Duke University Libraries launched the YBP ePreferred approval plan to actively increase the library’s eBook collection in support of the library’s current strategic plan Goal 2.1 to “increase access to digital scholarly content in all formats.” After experience with firm ordering eBooks from YBP and a series of changes to the library’s complex approval plan, Duke began adding a variety of scholarly eBooks to the library’s collection using the ePreferred approval plan. The pilot was assessed to determine if building the eBook collection via the approval plan meets the library’s needs. Cost implications, eBook use and feedback from librarians and patrons also played a role in assessing the effectiveness of the pilot. Providing access to these eBooks via the library’s catalog was a key challenge .

DISASTER OF PORT-AU-PRINCE
Summary of the Event
Port-Au-Prince is the capital city of Haiti located at coordinates 18°32′N 72°20′W. Haiti is an island nation in the Caribbean. The city is located by the sea on the Gulf of Gonave, a deep natural harbor. The city is ringed with hills. The island of Haiti overlies a fault line in the earth’s crust, the Enriquillo-Plantain Garden fault system (Marley, 2005).
Haiti is a 3rd World Country and consequently, the city is a third world city. It has a population of 1,897,846 souls within its boundaries. For a country to be defined as a third world country, it must fulfill at least two of the following three conditions, first, its main source of income is mainly from agricultural or mining activities. Secondly, its education, health and infrastructure sectors must be poorly developed as indicated by high levels of mortality, low life expectancy and high illiteracy levels among the population. Thirdly the per capita income of the population should be less than $1000 per annum. Using this criterion, Port-au-Prince qualifies as a third world city. The main driver of the economy of Port-au-Prince is the export of coffee and sugar thus agriculture is the main driver of the economy of the City. Secondly, the city has only two operational hospitals, which operate at low efficiency. The city has a number of highways but they are poorly maintained and only see limited use. The infant mortality rate is 55 deaths per 1000 live births, a very high number compared to only 6 per 1000 births in other countries. The GDP per capita for the city is $851 per annum. Therefore, port au prince fulfils all three criteria and is therefore classified as a third world country (Tobin, 2013).
The natural hazards that could affect Port-au-Price include Earthquakes, Tsunamis, hurricanes, Landslides, Floods and wild fires (Wade, 2010).
On 12 January 2010 4:53 pm, a 7.0 magnitude earthquake struck Port-au-Prince and it wrecked the city. Several buildings were lost including a number of government buildings such as the legislative palace which housed parliament, the palace of Justice which housed the Supreme Court, the presidential palace, several ministerial buildings, the city’s main hospital , the sea port, and the airport. The death toll was estimated to be about 160,000 people with official government records reporting as high as 220,000 deaths. The government estimated that 250,000 residences were destroyed, 30,000 commercial buildings were brought down, and an estimated 3,000,000 people were affected as a result of the quake (ABC News, 2010).
Roles of Response Agencies
As a result of the 2010 earthquake, Port-au-Prince is in a precarious position with respect to any Natural disaster. Already, the damage that an earthquake can do to the city has already materialized. The whole city, and indeed the country was brought ...

Direct Relief’s annual report on Fiscal Year 2014: During this period—July 1, 2013, through June 30, 2014—Direct Relief responded to more requests for assistance, fulfilled its humanitarian mission more expansively, and provided more assistance to more people in need than ever before in the organization’s 66-year history.
Nonprofit community health centers and clinics that provide preventive and primary healthcare services for 24 million people – or one in 13 persons in the U.S. – report that the first year of the Affordable Care Act’s implementation had uneven effects, particularly between facilities in Medicaid expansion and non-expansion states.
The findings were released today by Direct Relief in The State of the Safety Net 2014, an annual report that examines issues and trends within the extensive network of nonprofit, community-based health centers and clinics, which are the principal point of access to healthcare and the medical home for persons with low incomes, without health insurance, and among the country’s most vulnerable. Such facilities include Federally Qualified Health Centers (FQHCs), nonprofit community-based health clinics, and free and charitable clinics.

Child and Maternal Health in Kenya 2011 ReportDirect Relief
This report evaluates access to maternal and child healthcare and health outcomes in Kenya using geographic information systems (GIS), statistical analysis, and a comprehensive review of existing literature.
It seeks to aid in identifying distributions of health facilities and services relative to key maternal and child health indicators (e.g., safe delivery, care and treatment of birth injuries, antenatal and postnatal care, immunization, and nutrition).
It also seeks to contribute a portfolio of geospatial maps for identifying, analyzing, and monitoring health needs in one of the world’s poorest, most densely populated, and most vulnerable regions. In addition to identifying and analyzing information currently available, the report highlights limitations of both Kenya’s existing data sets and overreliance on distance as a measure of “access” and “use.”
This report responds to a request from Direct Relief International (DRI) to identify healthcare access and health outcomes in Kenya as part of its multi-organizational collaborative project to enhance health services in an integrated and efficient manner.
Along with the African Medical Research Foundation (AMREF), Marie Stopes International (MSI), and district-level health ministries in Kenya, Tanzania, and Uganda, DRI is attempting to determine critical gaps in health infrastructure.

They survived the quake.
We’re helping them survive what comes after.
In the months following the 7.0-magnitude earthquake that devastated
Haiti’s capital on January 12, 2010, Direct Relief has delivered 55 shipments
of emergency medical assistance worth $38.5 million to more than 40 Haitian
healthcare providers. Having worked in Haiti since 1964, Direct Relief had
strong relationships with the country’s largest hospitals and clinics, allowing
us to rapidly deploy resources where they were needed most.
Backed by the massive generosity of private and corporate supporters,
Direct Relief has put together the most comprehensive emergency response
in our 62-year history—more than 230 tons, or 350 pallets, of specifically
requested medicines and supplies have been expedited to caregivers in
Haiti, much of it airlifted free of charge by FedEx.
As unprecedented as the short-term response has been, Direct Relief
recognizes that the need in Haiti won’t fade with the headlines.

4. Mobility for the Long Run:
prosthetics and rehabilitation
Traumatic injuries were widespread following the earthquake—crushed bones, spinal cord
injuries, and amputated limbs. Many of these injuries will result in life-long conditions and
most will require rehabilitation. Even if the earthquake had not decimated the healthcare
infrastructure, it would have been unable to support the immediate and long-term needs of
those affected.
Building on the success of the prosthetics and orthotics program Direct Relief created
in Pakistan following the earthquake of 2005, Direct Relief has committed $2 million to
strengthen Haiti’s physical rehabilitation capacity.

Earthquake Responses in
China and Chile
Emergency response presents challenges in countries
with stringent customs or importation policies.
Most recently, Direct Relief faced these challenges in
responding to the 8.8-magnitude earthquake in Chile and
the 6.9-magnitude earthquake in China. Thanks to strong
collaborations with healthcare providers and medical
manufacturers working in these countries, Direct Relief
was able to provide needed assistance to people injured in
the earthquakes.
