2. Amazing Earthquakes How Earthquakes Destroy in Seconds Natural disasters are a result of nature that affects the earth. An earthquake begins when pressure from the core of our earth moves tectonic plates against each other which causes rubbing and pushing an that sends out seismic waves called p-waves, s-waves, and surface waves. These waves make the earth vibrate and shake. Earthquakes can affect people because homes are destroyed and prevent people from having warmth and protection from the elements. You can prepare for an earthquake by building safely, then find a safe place to protect yourself, organize supplies, and lastly make an emergency plan with your family. Other natural disasters are: avalanches, floods, hurricanes, tornadoes, lighting storms, tsunamis, volcano eruptions and wild fires.

4. Five Dollars Makes a Difference Why donate??? Flagstaff Academy is donating to three different organizations including a hospital, an orphanage and school, and reforesting the land. The services these non-profit organizations provide will help the people of Haiti by providing basic essentials. What does $5.00 mean??? The goal for all students at Flagstaff Academy is to raise $5.00 in change. $5.00 will buy one gallon of clean water, a bag of rice, and a few cans of beans, which can feed a Haitian family for a day.

10. Geography of Haiti The largest rivers in Haiti are the Artibonite River and the Grande-Anse River. The earthquake occurred on January 12th, 2010 and changed the geography of Haiti by crumbling buildings. Haiti is located in the Caribbean Sea, in the Western Hemisphere. The Dominican Republic and Haiti share an island. The capital of Haiti is Port-Au-Prince. Haiti is 10,714 sq miles

11. Flagstaff Academy Supports Non-Profits The non-profit organizations Flagstaff Academy is supporting are raising money to buy supplies for the people of Haiti. Little Brothers of the Good Shepherd: Runs an orphanage and school for homeless children Hospital Albert Schweitzer HAS: A hospital providing care for Haitians in need of medical assistance Reforest Haiti NOW: Timber Tree Project is working to reforest the land

12. Little Brothers of the Good Shepherd The Little Brothers of the Good Shepherd provides an exceptional home for orphans in Haiti. Over 80 kids live in the orphanage and over 300 students at the school. The organization saves the kids from poverty, or a life of living on the streets. Making a donation might help the organization purchase new notebooks, pencils, books, and concrete to fix their building destroyed in the earthquake.
