Program Information:
The artistic ties the city of Charleston has with Spoleto are of inestimable value. Students will visit our sister city to write and to study
literature, as well as to meet with artists and writers living there, inspiring them to continue their education with an even greater
sense of the importance of art, and of writing. Staying at a villa compound located just outside of Spoleto, students will share meals,
hold readings, and spend quiet time writing and reading. Each week a special group dinner will feature intensive and lively discussions
of the craft of writing. In addition, students will take cooking classes and enjoy day trips to Assisi and into the mountains of the Apen-
nines. The program also features a four day educational excursion to Florence, where students will take guided tours of such im-
portant artistic and historical sites as the Uffizi Gallery, the Duomo, and the Accademia Gallery.

Bret Lott is Professor of English and Writer-in-Residence at the College of Charleston. The author of thirteen books, including two
New York Times bestsellers, his work has been translated into six languages. In 2006, he was named a member of the National Coun-
cil on the Arts. Mr. Lott has taught students in the study abroad program to Annot, France, and has for the last four summers di-
rected the summer program to Spoleto.

Trish Ward is Professor of English at the College, specializing in Old and Middle English language and literature. She also teaches
courses on J.K. Rowling’s Harry Potter series and the works of J.R.R. Tolkien, and her research interests include Arthurian literature,
early Irish literature, history of the English language, and paleography. She has led three study abroad programs in Ireland and three
in the United Kingdom.

The Program fee of $4,986* includes a non-refundable $50 application fee, round-trip airfare, lodging, ground transportation, meal
stipend, excursion to Florence, medical insurance, and entrances into sites. TUITION FOR THE COURSES IS NOT INCLUDED.
Application deadline is March 1, 2014. Deposit of $550 will be posted to the student’s MyCharleston account once the application
has been submitted to, and approved by, the CIE. Scholarships of up to $1500 are available to CofC students for study abroad. Eligi-
bility is based on demonstrated financial aid and academic merit.
