The Central Europe Faculty Program is directed by Dr. Hana Cervinkova and based in Wroclaw, Poland. It includes coursework taught by US and European faculty across disciplines at three local universities, as well as a traveling seminar through Lithuania, Poland, Czech Republic, and Germany. Students explore the history and current issues of reconciliation in major cities of Central Europe. The program provides housing in Wroclaw, and students have opportunities for internships, independent research, and publishing work about their experiences.

Program Director Dr. Hana Cervinkova is a professor of cultural
anthropology and the founding director of the International Institute
for the Study of Culture and Education, a center for practice and
scholarship at the University of Lower Silesia in Wroclaw. She
has been an academic partner of Syracuse University Abroad for
12 years and co-teaches Negotiating Identities Across Europe’s
Borders with Dr. Juliet Golden, a specialist in Central European
history and international education.
Dr. Golden also co-teaches East Central Europe in the 20th
Century with Polish-American sociologist Prof. Elzbieta Matynia of the
New School for Social Research and the University of Lower Silesia.
Other program faculty include prominent Polish bilingual
professors who have experience teaching both U.S. and
international students. Among them are political philosophers
Professors Lotar Rasi´nski and Adam Chmielewski; Prof. Dominika
Ferens, an expert in queer and feminist theories; sociologists
and activists Drs. Malgorzata Maciejewska, Katarzyna Gawlicz,
and Marcin Starnawski; and Polish language teacher Dr. Lukasz
Rogodzinski.
Students will meet and work with other experts during field trips
and guest lectures and in independent studies and internship and
volunteering settings.

MINIMUM GPA REQUIREMENT: 2.5
Due to limited enrollment, preference will be
given to students with a 3.0 GPA or higher.
COST OF ATTENDANCE
SU Abroad programs carry a program fee
in addition to the cost of SU tuition. For
Wroclaw participants, the fee includes the
traveling seminar (transportation, hotel
accommodations, some group meals),
housing, on-site orientation, cultural activities,
the International Student ID card, and other
services not covered by tuition.
GRANTS AND FINANCIAL AID
Every student enrolling in the Central Europe
program will receive a $1,000 grant. Syracuse
University also awards additional scholarships
and grants for students studying abroad.

2. The Culture and Politics of Reconciliation
THE CULTURE AND POLITICS OF RECONCILIATION program allows you to explore Central Europe
with a group of dedicated students and professors as you travel to and study in nine European cities
in four countries—Warsaw, Berlin, Dresden, Prague, Auschwitz, Krakow, Lublin, Sejny, and Vilnius.
Learn about the history, processes, and struggles of reconciliation in these rapidly transforming urban
spaces. Have the opportunity to begin work on your distinction and capstone projects. And take courses
with U.S. and European students in a range of disciplines, from geography to economics to neuroscience
to Polish, at three different universities in Wroclaw.

A range of internships and volunteering
opportunities are available for students
while in Wroclaw, especially in non-
governmental organizations that focus
on human rights, immigration, social
justice, and sustainable development.
URBAN LABS CENTRAL EUROPE
During your semester abroad,
you will publish original essays
and photographs on the website
www.urbanlabsce.eu, a student-driven
project designed especially for this
SU Abroad program. The project
grows from the tradition of action
research, which aims at transforming
knowledge into practical social action.
Therefore, these diverse contributions
prepared following study tours and
in-class exchanges are intended to
give students a voice in deliberations
about Europe’s past and its future.
