SpiceWorld 2010 Welcome Keynote - Scott Abel, CEO & Co-founder, Spiceworks

Editor's Notes

  1. 1.2M IT Pros. 196 countries. 23 languages. What started as an experiment has exploded into a world wide phenomena … One that is growing at 2,000 users per day! But its not just about the users … <CLICK> 66M Devices – growing at more than 2M per month <CLICK> 345M page views – on track to break 20M this month <CLICK> 1.3B minutes have been spent in Spiceworks, and its growing at 100M per month. <CLICK> $200B in annual spend on technology products & services – and we add $7B every month <CLICK>
  2. All of this brought to you by Spiceworks Act I –it’s been all about management. Four years ago we set out on powerful mission: To Simplify Everything IT for IT Pros in SMB our focus was simplifying the tasks you do 80% of the time and that meant the management of your network <CLICK>
  3. We started with agent-less inventory – because it was simple and easy to use. And today it’s the most pervasive inventory tool on the planet. <CLICK> In fact, 67,000 computers get added to our network every day. That’s like adding a company the size of Cisco daily. 3,900 of those just got rebooted – I guess some things never change  <CLICK>
  4. 9 mths later we added a help desk to manage your work … Today it is the most widely used help desk system ever <CLICK> 345,000 tickets are being worked right now – 24,000 were just closed. Sadly, 1,500 of those involved keyboards & coffee  <CLICK>
  5. You asked for help monitoring your network – So we pushed the limits of agent-less technology … <CLICK> Today more than 45,000 alerts will be raised… 1,700 are for ink cartridges that need to be replaced <CLICK>
  6. You asked for help managing more complicated networks … So we added network mapping and monitoring … <CLICK> 82 TB of bandwidth are managed in Spiceworks right now … 23% of it going to Youtube  <CLICK>
  7. In a little over four years we’ve gone from a simple inventory tool to one of the industries most comprehensive network management solution. <CLICK> While there is still much for us to do in the management arena, I think we can check the management box.
  8. So what’s next? What will be the second act of Spiceworks?
  9. Management is only part of what you do everyday … <CLICK> What about all the other parts of the IT life cycle? You research & buy new products <CLICK> you install them and support them <CLICK> upgrade them and even dispose of them What about all of this? It’s the “other” 20-25% of your day Act II of Spiceworks is about simplifying the rest of your day
  10. Enter the Spiceworks 5.0 Platform – the first step toward simplifying the rest of your day. With applications like People View, Purchase List Register, and network config. Backup we’ve taken a step in the right direction. But we can’t do it all – we’re just a small company. What about the 100’s of world class products already out there … Wouldn’t it be better to just plug them into Spiceworks – giving you one place to go for everything IT <CLICK>
  11. A year ago we started to develop a set of APIs to allow 3rd parties To plug functionality directly into Spiceworks. In 5.0 we’ve taken that even further, making it easier to extend Spiceworks. <CLICK> Out goal is simple – make it the one platform you need for Everything IT. All the functionality you need – under one single pane of glass Lets look at a couple of examples. <CLICK>
  12. We want to make it easier for you to find and buy the products you need … So we’re integrating your preferred vendors directly into the application. We’ve started with research and price comparisons <CLICK> Next year we’ll add one-click purchase integration directly with your favorite vendors <CLICK>
  13. What about cloud services? More and more of your IT infrastructure is moving to the cloud. We want to make provisioning and managing those as easy as we do for technology on-site. In 5.0 you can now manage Rackspace hosted email directly in the application – just like you do with local exchange. <CLICK> We’ll be expanding this functionality later this year so you can manage your account as well, adding mailboxes or changing your plan. <CLICK>
  14. Part of your job is managing service contracts – we’re trying to make that easier as well. 5.0 automatically tracks device warranties and notifies you they’re about to expire <CLICK> With one click you can choose what warranties to renew and for how long … <CLICK> And with a single click we send the request off to the manufacture <CLICK> In the next year you’ll see more vendors and more direct integration – letting you purchase these renewals directly online.
  15. Not bad – but we can do better. What about when a new employee starts? Isn’t here a lot to be done? New accounts to be created, directories to be set up, computers & software to be ordered? Today you can easily add a new employee to your organization and update Active Directory with all the info. <CLICK> We’ll be adding the capability to automatically provision that employee as well … Add a new employee, chose their type of role – inside sales or marketing <CLICK> And we automatically provision the hardware, software & cloud services that employee needs … <CLICK And it all gets tracked in your Global Purchase List so you never have to wonder what you’ve ordered and what you haven’t This is just a few examples of how we’re working with 3rd parties to extend the functionality of spiceworks to help you simplify everything IT.
  16. How’s it working so far? Last year when we announced our Open Platform, there were 4 major brands that had experimented with our APIs. <CLICK>
  17. What a difference a year makes … There are now more than 18 partners and we add a couple every month. More and more technology vendors deciding that Spiceworks is the place to be … In fact, revenue from these kinds of plug-ins has gone up 30X in the last year!
  18. We won’t stop there. We’ve got more surprises like PeopleView up our sleeves. More management features like real-time performance management <CLICK> Application advisors to help you manage VMs and size servers <CLICK> Purchasing of printer ink – right in the application And more focus on performance – we know we have more to do there. In the last year we’ve doubled the size of our development team – and you’ll see impact in 2011. More features coming your way …
  19. Before we close today I wanted to speak to how we’re doing as a company. At every Spiceworks event this topic comes up. How are we doing financially? Are we going to be around in a year? Is Spiceworks going to make it? I covered this last year and thought you might like a little update 
  20. Last year I put up this graph – It showed our revenue growth over the last 3 years and forecasted we’d double in 2010. The good news … we did double … <CLICK>
  21. And it looks like revenue in 2011 will double again! Why is it growing at such a fantastic rate? One reason: $200 Billion in spend. Vendors want to reach IT Pros in SMB and Spiceworks is the easiest way to do that. But revenue is only have the story. If you can’t turn a profit – you don’t have a real business.
  22. Last year I put up this profitability chart … not bad, it showed us being breakeven at year end and making a small profit in 2010. <CLICK>
  23. Here is where we ended up. We did indeed get to breakeven at the end of 2009 – but there was one problem We weren’t building features as fast as you needed them. We didn’t feel like we were capitalizing on the explosive opportunity in front of us. So we decided to take an outside investment and accelerate our development effort. In the last year we’ve doubled our Dev team – and I think you’ll agree that with 5.0 this investment is paying off. And yet … it only cost us 1 year of profitably. We’ll end this year breakeven again – And next year should be one of profitability. So thanks to you – Spiceworks isn’t just doing well – we’re doing fantastically well!
  24. With that, let me officially Welcome you to Spiceworld 2010. We’ve got an exciting couple of days for with lots to cover. So without further a due … lets get IT started.
