This document discusses appropriate considerations for selecting augmentative and alternative communication (AAC) apps. It emphasizes that communication is multi-modal and depends on the communication partner and situation. Key factors for long-term success include the user experiencing success with a system that serves various communication functions and is valued by partners for real communication. Inappropriate abandonment can occur if partners don't see the need for AAC, there are insufficient opportunities to use it, or if the vocabulary doesn't meet the user's daily needs. Adults who use AAC stress the importance of autonomy, real-life experiences, communication partners, practice and opportunities. Opinion papers recommend a clinical approach and partnering with families when selecting apps.
