The Spanish flu pandemic of 1918 spread quickly through soldiers and sailors during World War I. It originated in the United States and Europe, not Spain as the name implies. The second wave in 1918 was much deadlier than the first, as the virus mutated to a more lethal form that risked younger, healthier people.
