The Apollo 11 mission was the first to land astronauts on the moon in July 1969. The rocket that launched Apollo 11 was composed of three parts: the Command Module carried the astronauts, the Service Module provided propulsion and fuel, and the Lunar Module landed on the moon's surface and carried Armstrong and Aldrin. Armstrong became the first person to walk on the moon, uttering the famous words "one small step for man, one giant leap for mankind." The Apollo 11 mission demonstrated the United States' superiority over the Soviet Union in the Space Race and resulted in renewed interest and funding for NASA's planetary exploration efforts.
