6. The Crew
Neil A. Armstrong- Commander of the Mission
Edwin "Buzz" E. Aldrin, Jr. – Lunar Module Pilot
Michael Collins- Command Module Pilot
Michael Collins- Command Module Pilot
7. The Mission Highlights
A SaturnV Launched Apollo 11 from Launch Pad 39A,part
of the Launch Complex 39 site at the Kennedy Space Center
on July 16, 1969 at 13:32:00 UTC (9:32:00 EDT local time)
Twelve minutes later it entered Earth orbit at an altitude of
100.4 nautical miles by 98.9 nautical miles.
On July 19, Apollo 11 passed behind the moon and fired its
service propulsion engine to enter the lunar orbit.
In the thirty orbits that followed the crew saw passing views
of their landing site in the SouthernSea ofTranquility about
12 miles (19 km) southwest of the crater Sabine D
8. The landing site was selected because it had characterized
as relatively flat & smooth by automated Ranger 8
& Surveyor 5 Landers along with the Lunar Orbiter mapping
spacecraft and unlikely to present major landing
or extravehicular activity (EVA) challenges.
In the following pictures the landing site has been shown.
9. ON July 20, 1969, the Lunar Module Eagle separated from
the command Module Columbia. Collins, alone
aboard Columbia, inspected Eagle as it pirouetted before
him to ensure the craft was not damaged.
Mission commander Neil Armstrong and pilot Buzz Aldrin,
landed the lunar module Eagle on July 20, 1969, at
20:17 UTC.
10. At 02:39 UTC on Monday July 21, 1969,Armstrong opened
the hatch, and at 02:51 UTC began his descent to the lunar
surface.
Armstrong pulled a D-ring to deploy the Modular
Equipment Stowage Assembly (MESA) folded
against Eagle's side and activate theTV camera, and at
02:56:15 UTC he set his left foot on the surface.
He was followed by Buzz Aldrin .
11. The mission returned to Earth on July 24,1969 at
16:50:35 UTC . It landed on North Pacific Ocean & it was
recovered by USS Hornet
12. Legacy
The astronauts collected materials from Moon that were
helpful for further research about Moon’s origin & nature .
It is regarded as one of the most significant achievements
of humanity & modern science.
This mission gave the space agencies enough confidence
that the space can be conquered by human race.
This mission was a victory for USA over Soviet Union during
the ColdWar era as the USA flag was planted on the surface
of Moon.
