WHAT IS SOUND EXACTLY?
SOUND IS A FORM OF ENERGY, WHICH IS ALWAYS PRODUCED BY
VIBRATING OBJECTS. Vibration is a kind of rapid to and fro motion
of an object from its central position. Sound is the sensation of
hearing .
IS SOUNDIMPORTANT?
Yes, sound does play a very crucial role in
our lives. For example, it helps us to communicate.
Communication is the easiest way through which we deliver
informationand messages.
Apart from this, sound also helps us to
listen to our favorite songs!
Animals are able to hear the eventsgoingaround
them, whichhelps them to predict danger.

HOW DO WE

The
and these sound waves
. From there, they
reach the and the sound
waves start to vibrate the eardrum.
The eardrum In turn vibrates the 3
tiny bones.
These bones
. In the cochlea, these
sound waves or vibrations get
converted to .
These impulses travel to the brain
via the auditory nerve where it is
interpreted as sound.

Characteristics of sound
Loudness
Pitch
quality
1. loudness- the loudness of sound helps
us to distinguish between loud and
feeble sounds. The loudness of the
sound depends on the amplitude. If the
amplitude is high, then the sound of the
sound would also be loud accordingly.
2. Pitch-the pitch of a sound helps us to
distinguish between shrill and deep
(lower) sounds. The pitch of a sound
depends on the frequency ( no. of
oscillations or vibrations that the body
makes per second.) higher the
frequency, higher the pitch.
3. Quality- The quality of the sound helps
us to distinguish between different
sound producing objects, even if they
are of the same pitch and loudness.

•Factories and other industries should be set up at a distance from residential areas.
• Silencing devices should be incorporated into heavy vehicles such as aircraft, industrial
•equipment, machinery and other home appliances.
• We should always play television, radio and other music systems at a low sound so that
•it does not harm the neighbourhood.
• Use of horns should be minimized especially near public places such as hospitals,
•religious places and schools.
• Sound proofing systems should be installed in industries, party halls and other buildings
•that produce a high amount of unwanted sounds.
• Trees should be planted in huge numbers as they can absorb unwanted noise from the
•environment.
• People should be made aware of noise pollution and its adverse effects, so that they can
•take an active involvement in preventing it.
