Sounds from a film: piano, horsehooves, storm, crow, drum, glass brake, man
talking, fighting, another man talking, coughing, groaning, cello,
Selective sound is used to emphasisekey sound elements within a sequence
Ambient sound is used to create a particular atmosphereor a senseof place.
Sound bridges is the useof sound to help transition between sequences pass
more fluidly.
Sound effects areused to create a senseof realism or create some
psychologicalimpact.
Diegetic sound–sound whosesourceis visible on the screen or whosesource
is implies to be presentby the action of the film.

Non diegetic sound–sound whosesourceis neither visible on the screen nor
has been implied to be present in the action.
- Narrators commentary
- Sound effects which are added for dramatic effect
- Musical score/soundtrack
Synchronous sound – This is when sound effect is matched with another
technical event or action which reinforces the effect
Asynchronous sound – This is when a sound originates from outside the
diegetic reality of the film; musical soundtrack.

Contrapuntal – noise or sound effect which doesn’tmatch the visuals, often
juxtaposed to create alternative meaning.
Voiceover – this is the voice of a character. This voice often guides or informs
the external audience but can be used to push them in the wrong way.
Theme music - this is the music that introduces, develops throughoutand ends
the film. Itoften indicates the personality and mode of address of the movie
Musical score - used to create atmosphere, to link shots or sequences, to help
create the narrativeor to offer information about characters.
Silence –film/TV are very rarely completely silent, but this effect is
occasionally used to provokea reaction from the audience.
