Soul Mind Stages In a Human Life
SHRIKANT R. RANA
2 | P a g e
Preface
This book suggests that in general, different stages exist in human life. In
identifying and exploring each stage attention is drawn to the particular
psychological or social factors that appear to precipitate or define it. In what
we believe to be a novel and important step, the idea is developed that each
new stage brings its own characteristic conflict; one that can only be
successfully surmounted through some synthesis of the opposed forces which
the person concerned typically then faces.

Acknowledgment
I would like to say that writing is never been my profession in my life.
But I always think to write about my thoughts which i am experiencing
or felt in my life.
So, after long time I am having opportunity to write about my thoughts.
I would like to thank Prof. Kaushik Das to inspire and motivated me to
write a book.
I thank to my friends and family to support and guidance during the
phase of writing.
And then finally I decided to write book about Soul Mind stages of a
Human in his life.
I had taken long time to write this book. There are no word about my
feelings and experience after finishing this book.
So, I like to thank again all of them who supported me for writing this
book ‘Soul Mind Stages In a Human Life ‘.

Chapter A- Ego and Stillness
The path of Evolutionary Enlightenment, like all enlightenment
teachings, is a path of ego-transcendence.
Here, transcending ego is not an end in itself - it's a means to a higher
end. The reason we want to have the liberating experience of transcending our
personal fears and desires and our culturally conditioned values is to open up
some space within the self - space for evolution to occur.
It's important because being inspired by the idea of conscious evolution
is one thing, while actually engaging in the process of evolution is something
else altogether. Many people are moved by the notion of evolutionary
becoming. But within themselves they are not free. They are trapped in
psychological hang-ups and attachments, with little or no space for that which
is new. Their souls are not liberated, and their choices and actions are still
being shaped by unconscious adherence to values and perspectives that have
nothing to do with being a liberated vessel for the evolution of consciousness
and culture.
Merely being inspired by the potential for conscious evolution does not
automatically give us access to the fearless inner freedom to actualise that
potential. In order to find that freedom, to open up that space for the new, it is
essential that you liberate yourself to a significant degree from your personal
fears and desires and your culturally conditioned values.
Inner freedom is not different from the goal of traditional enlightenment.
In Evolutionary Enlightenment, the attainment of spiritual freedom is not the
end of the path but, ideally, becomes the foundation from which to engage in
conscious evolution. So the foundation of the path and practice of Evolutionary
Enlightenment is nothing less than the position of traditional enlightenment
itself. In order to release your own consciousness and psyche for the wider and
deeper embrace of the life process that Evolutionary Enlightenment demands,
you must disentangle yourself, you must significantly free yourself from your
karma, history, culture and personal ego. Sometimes people think that ego is
self-respect so they never try to come out of that but actually they are keeping
their self in rigid body. And finally become conscious and try to defend their
6 | P a g e
self with others. So after such time this kind of people go in a stage where they
could not express their self.
So the way to practise this radical position is to literally take the posture
he is taking - to engage with what i call "the art and science of stillness" or the
traditional practice of meditation... In learning how to be still, you are choosing
to stand for and express that deepest part of yourself that empty no-place
before the beginning of time, before anything ever happened.
That formless ground of being is always the deepest dimension of who
we all are, and it is the ultimate source and wellspring of all that is. Whenever
we know who we are and where we are at that we are in stage of realization.
In that ground, nothing ever moves, because there is no time, form, subject or
object. There is only one, eternally at rest and at peace.

Chapter B -Compassion
Compassion is not an attribute of any one religion. It is a universal
principle for happiness and peace. In a world torn by conflict and strife, where
violence and not love dictates people's actions, what every person, at every
level, of every age needs to learn is the art of nurturing compassion within.
Be it a homemaker fulfilling the many needs of her family, an
entrepreneur meeting people and clinching deals for her company, a politician
passing bills in the legislature that can change the destiny of millions or a auto
rickshaw driver bargaining for higher rates with her passenger - whoever you
may be, you need compassion. Compassion should no more lie in the
ideologies of philosophers, or in the lucrative rewards of theologians. The voice
of compassion needs to be heard in every household, educational institution,
office, business unit, shop, mall and theatre, besides other places and
circumstances.
We have also conceptually dismissed the possibility of someone living
and embodying such a quality in the hurly-burly of everyday life. Is it so difficult
to live compassionately? Or are we so incapable that we cannot raise ourselves
to those standards?
Compassion begins with empathy. Empathy is the ability to feel for
another. They who are sensitive to the motions of life, to the experiences of
pain and pleasure are capable of empathy. They who have watched the
movements of their thoughts, the burden of unnecessary thinking, and the
pain of conflicting thoughts know it well. They, who have paid attention to
their emotional upsurges, the unintelligent ways of anger, hurt or hate, the
irrationality of fear, feel empathy for another who is going through a similar
emotion. Hence, compassion begins with attention to one's own life
experiences, be it physical or emotional.
8 | P a g e
Empathy and compassion thus born would naturally blossom into acts of
kindness to reach out to others. Well-being of the other is the highest priority
for a compassionate person; hence her actions would reflect tremendous
intelligence, fortitude and discretion. It could be a dynamic plunge into action
to change the adverse situation of the one who is suffering. It could also be
gentle words of love and strength or a heartfelt prayer for Divine help.
Compassion is not the armour of the weak; it is the weapon of the strong.
It is irresponsible to think, believe and preach that anger and violence can
solve our problems. Problems at micro as well as macro level arise because of
lack of understanding and love between people. Problems that are situation-
based are very less compared to those that are emotions-based. Situation-
based problems need better strategy and skill to solve them but emotion
based problems need people who are involved in moving out of those negative
emotions that are causing them.
That is why any constructive change can never be effected through anger
and violence. Compassion is the answer.
Let us nurture the noble virtue of compassion consciously with
dedication. Let us see the faces of people who walk into our world with smiles,
tears, affection and wrath. Let us meditate on their feelings to let compassion
blossom.
9 | P a g e
Chapter C - Come out of Suffering...!!!
On an average every human is in the grip of miseries, ever since they
entered in the realm of time and mind and lost the awareness of Self. Hence
they are confused that why are they in grip of miseries. One yearns to get rid
of misery and prolong pleasure. The greatest misery is death that hounds every
living soul.
Suffering is inevitable as long as one identifies with mind and body -- as
long as one is spiritually unconscious. Suffering is external and is caused by
external agents. We suffer due to resentment and hatred or jealousy towards
others. That is like dying every moment due to suffering. Let's move away from
those 'others' and remove the cause of suffering or every minute-death. With
cause at some distance, we will immortalise pleasure and distance ourselves
from death. Inevitable will become evitable. Mortal will become immortal.
The mindset we have has not helped us. It has led us to a mediocre reality.
It has led us to accepting a reality that is full of suffering and pain.
We need something that is fulfilling, something that we can enjoy. Bliss
will be the character of that existence. When can humanity as a whole get that
reality? Is it impossible? No, it's not impossible. It is the very nature of our
existence to be in bliss, to be in symmetry.
In quantum physics, they call it 'super symmetry'. There is
super symmetry - at the particle level. Super symmetry is when everything is in
perfect condition, but then we are far from that kind of reality. But we cannot
access this reality if the mind is functioning in the same way as it is now. It has
to function from a different level. And what is that level, where there is no
knowledge, no ignorance.

Chapter D - Love Your Self...!!!
A martyr, who dies for his fellows, a mother who does everything for her
newborn and all the Gandhi and Mother Teresa have one thing in common,:
supposedly, they act SELFLESS. But selfless does not exists.
Many biologists argue that our morality and every selfless act based on
“reciprocal altruism” to make life easier we agree that if i do something for
you, you will do something for me. In order to make altruism attractive, nature
gave us a brain that rewards our benevolent and selfless deeds with
hormones which make us feel good.
That might be true for the mother nurturing her child, but what about
the martyr (since he is dead) most likely does not experience good feelings.
Nevertheless, even such act of altruism cannot be entirely selfless.
Let alone the fact that if the martyr dies with the thought that he acted
after what he judged as imperative, there must be an i to make this decision
and an i to act. Even though it was not a very egoistic act, it was not without
ego.
If we introduce the concept of ego and self on the basis of Hinduism, we
could argue that no act in a dualistic sphere is without ego, but it’s always
better to reduce ego to the modicum. Or, like Shiva, step in the ego-dwarf and
suppress him.
If we see Self defined as the holistic, all encompassing world-soul, which
exists in everything and everyone, it would be absurd to claim there is a
selfless act. What we describe as selfless would rather be a lesser ego-focused
deed which is concentrating on the Self.
And this self can be me that i see in the other person’s Self, or vice versa.
If the Self is the underlying quintessence that unites all of us, it makes perfect
sense of acting egoistically if we are all the same.
11 | P a g e
Therefore, it is of paramount importance to act for and with the Self.
Thus, I have to love myself, since if since for another self, which is essentially
the same.
Lastly, I would argue that it is not only logically impossible to act without
ego, but that it is not desirable –especially in a relationship. Honestly, who
wants a partner who does everything for someone else, without having any
justifiable demands?
12 | P a g e
Chapter E – Attachment and Love
Most of suffer in life because of confusion between love and
attachment. Love is a positive quality of giving someone positive emotions
without any expectation. But attachment is getting tied to a person or an
object with the expectations that the person or the object will make us happy.
Love never falls, but attachment causes bondage as well as disappointments
and ultimately makes us sad. Most times we confuse attachment with love and
therefore do not want to get rid of attachment despite being unhappy.
Attachment is our strong preference for persons or the things which are
perceived to be favourable to us. We all have fame, relatives, friends, and
other. We hardly pause to think if they makes us more happy or unhappy.
Most times, blind us in the process, so we tend to ignore the minus points of
things or persons to which we are attached. Discrimination is lost when it
comes to dealing with your attachment. So you suffer. Secondly, the more you
are attached, the more you expect something out of that relationship. When
these expectations are not met, it causes misery.
How should we then deal with our relationships with family and others?
Scriptures say one should have working relationships in life. We should avoid
extremes that lead one to say: ‘I cannot live without you ‘or ‘go get lost’. Our
approach should be ‘I care for you.’ We should behave like a managing trustee
for our family, without feelings of ownership or possessiveness. Family
members also need space in life. Attachment leads to clinging, which they do
not appreciate. Instead of a controlling attitude, our attempt should be to be
ready to do something for their welfare while giving them enough elbow room
in life.

Dear reader let me tell you something about these topics which i have
covered, so far are all real thoughts of mine well experienced. Some of them
are from speaking tree and some of them are mine. I have taken these topics
of different mind stages of a person in his/her life. I hope that this book will
help you in understanding your own mind stage.
Thank you...

Soul mind stages. SHRIKANT RANA

  • 1. Soul Mind Stages In a Human Life SHRIKANT R. RANA
  • 2. 2 | P a g e Preface This book suggests that in general, different stages exist in human life. In identifying and exploring each stage attention is drawn to the particular psychological or social factors that appear to precipitate or define it. In what we believe to be a novel and important step, the idea is developed that each new stage brings its own characteristic conflict; one that can only be successfully surmounted through some synthesis of the opposed forces which the person concerned typically then faces.
  • 3. 3 | P a g e Acknowledgment I would like to say that writing is never been my profession in my life. But I always think to write about my thoughts which i am experiencing or felt in my life. So, after long time I am having opportunity to write about my thoughts. I would like to thank Prof. Kaushik Das to inspire and motivated me to write a book. I thank to my friends and family to support and guidance during the phase of writing. And then finally I decided to write book about Soul Mind stages of a Human in his life. I had taken long time to write this book. There are no word about my feelings and experience after finishing this book. So, I like to thank again all of them who supported me for writing this book ‘Soul Mind Stages In a Human Life ‘.

  • 5. 5 | P a g e Chapter A- Ego and Stillness The path of Evolutionary Enlightenment, like all enlightenment teachings, is a path of ego-transcendence. Here, transcending ego is not an end in itself - it's a means to a higher end. The reason we want to have the liberating experience of transcending our personal fears and desires and our culturally conditioned values is to open up some space within the self - space for evolution to occur. It's important because being inspired by the idea of conscious evolution is one thing, while actually engaging in the process of evolution is something else altogether. Many people are moved by the notion of evolutionary becoming. But within themselves they are not free. They are trapped in psychological hang-ups and attachments, with little or no space for that which is new. Their souls are not liberated, and their choices and actions are still being shaped by unconscious adherence to values and perspectives that have nothing to do with being a liberated vessel for the evolution of consciousness and culture. Merely being inspired by the potential for conscious evolution does not automatically give us access to the fearless inner freedom to actualise that potential. In order to find that freedom, to open up that space for the new, it is essential that you liberate yourself to a significant degree from your personal fears and desires and your culturally conditioned values. Inner freedom is not different from the goal of traditional enlightenment. In Evolutionary Enlightenment, the attainment of spiritual freedom is not the end of the path but, ideally, becomes the foundation from which to engage in conscious evolution. So the foundation of the path and practice of Evolutionary Enlightenment is nothing less than the position of traditional enlightenment itself. In order to release your own consciousness and psyche for the wider and deeper embrace of the life process that Evolutionary Enlightenment demands, you must disentangle yourself, you must significantly free yourself from your karma, history, culture and personal ego. Sometimes people think that ego is self-respect so they never try to come out of that but actually they are keeping their self in rigid body. And finally become conscious and try to defend their
  • 6. 6 | P a g e self with others. So after such time this kind of people go in a stage where they could not express their self. So the way to practise this radical position is to literally take the posture he is taking - to engage with what i call "the art and science of stillness" or the traditional practice of meditation... In learning how to be still, you are choosing to stand for and express that deepest part of yourself that empty no-place before the beginning of time, before anything ever happened. That formless ground of being is always the deepest dimension of who we all are, and it is the ultimate source and wellspring of all that is. Whenever we know who we are and where we are at that we are in stage of realization. In that ground, nothing ever moves, because there is no time, form, subject or object. There is only one, eternally at rest and at peace.
  • 7. 7 | P a g e Chapter B -Compassion Compassion is not an attribute of any one religion. It is a universal principle for happiness and peace. In a world torn by conflict and strife, where violence and not love dictates people's actions, what every person, at every level, of every age needs to learn is the art of nurturing compassion within. Be it a homemaker fulfilling the many needs of her family, an entrepreneur meeting people and clinching deals for her company, a politician passing bills in the legislature that can change the destiny of millions or a auto rickshaw driver bargaining for higher rates with her passenger - whoever you may be, you need compassion. Compassion should no more lie in the ideologies of philosophers, or in the lucrative rewards of theologians. The voice of compassion needs to be heard in every household, educational institution, office, business unit, shop, mall and theatre, besides other places and circumstances. We have also conceptually dismissed the possibility of someone living and embodying such a quality in the hurly-burly of everyday life. Is it so difficult to live compassionately? Or are we so incapable that we cannot raise ourselves to those standards? Compassion begins with empathy. Empathy is the ability to feel for another. They who are sensitive to the motions of life, to the experiences of pain and pleasure are capable of empathy. They who have watched the movements of their thoughts, the burden of unnecessary thinking, and the pain of conflicting thoughts know it well. They, who have paid attention to their emotional upsurges, the unintelligent ways of anger, hurt or hate, the irrationality of fear, feel empathy for another who is going through a similar emotion. Hence, compassion begins with attention to one's own life experiences, be it physical or emotional.
  • 8. 8 | P a g e Empathy and compassion thus born would naturally blossom into acts of kindness to reach out to others. Well-being of the other is the highest priority for a compassionate person; hence her actions would reflect tremendous intelligence, fortitude and discretion. It could be a dynamic plunge into action to change the adverse situation of the one who is suffering. It could also be gentle words of love and strength or a heartfelt prayer for Divine help. Compassion is not the armour of the weak; it is the weapon of the strong. It is irresponsible to think, believe and preach that anger and violence can solve our problems. Problems at micro as well as macro level arise because of lack of understanding and love between people. Problems that are situation- based are very less compared to those that are emotions-based. Situation- based problems need better strategy and skill to solve them but emotion based problems need people who are involved in moving out of those negative emotions that are causing them. That is why any constructive change can never be effected through anger and violence. Compassion is the answer. Let us nurture the noble virtue of compassion consciously with dedication. Let us see the faces of people who walk into our world with smiles, tears, affection and wrath. Let us meditate on their feelings to let compassion blossom.
  • 9. 9 | P a g e Chapter C - Come out of Suffering...!!! On an average every human is in the grip of miseries, ever since they entered in the realm of time and mind and lost the awareness of Self. Hence they are confused that why are they in grip of miseries. One yearns to get rid of misery and prolong pleasure. The greatest misery is death that hounds every living soul. Suffering is inevitable as long as one identifies with mind and body -- as long as one is spiritually unconscious. Suffering is external and is caused by external agents. We suffer due to resentment and hatred or jealousy towards others. That is like dying every moment due to suffering. Let's move away from those 'others' and remove the cause of suffering or every minute-death. With cause at some distance, we will immortalise pleasure and distance ourselves from death. Inevitable will become evitable. Mortal will become immortal. The mindset we have has not helped us. It has led us to a mediocre reality. It has led us to accepting a reality that is full of suffering and pain. We need something that is fulfilling, something that we can enjoy. Bliss will be the character of that existence. When can humanity as a whole get that reality? Is it impossible? No, it's not impossible. It is the very nature of our existence to be in bliss, to be in symmetry. In quantum physics, they call it 'super symmetry'. There is super symmetry - at the particle level. Super symmetry is when everything is in perfect condition, but then we are far from that kind of reality. But we cannot access this reality if the mind is functioning in the same way as it is now. It has to function from a different level. And what is that level, where there is no knowledge, no ignorance.
  • 10. 10 | P a g e Chapter D - Love Your Self...!!! A martyr, who dies for his fellows, a mother who does everything for her newborn and all the Gandhi and Mother Teresa have one thing in common,: supposedly, they act SELFLESS. But selfless does not exists. Many biologists argue that our morality and every selfless act based on “reciprocal altruism” to make life easier we agree that if i do something for you, you will do something for me. In order to make altruism attractive, nature gave us a brain that rewards our benevolent and selfless deeds with hormones which make us feel good. That might be true for the mother nurturing her child, but what about the martyr (since he is dead) most likely does not experience good feelings. Nevertheless, even such act of altruism cannot be entirely selfless. Let alone the fact that if the martyr dies with the thought that he acted after what he judged as imperative, there must be an i to make this decision and an i to act. Even though it was not a very egoistic act, it was not without ego. If we introduce the concept of ego and self on the basis of Hinduism, we could argue that no act in a dualistic sphere is without ego, but it’s always better to reduce ego to the modicum. Or, like Shiva, step in the ego-dwarf and suppress him. If we see Self defined as the holistic, all encompassing world-soul, which exists in everything and everyone, it would be absurd to claim there is a selfless act. What we describe as selfless would rather be a lesser ego-focused deed which is concentrating on the Self. And this self can be me that i see in the other person’s Self, or vice versa. If the Self is the underlying quintessence that unites all of us, it makes perfect sense of acting egoistically if we are all the same.
  • 11. 11 | P a g e Therefore, it is of paramount importance to act for and with the Self. Thus, I have to love myself, since if since for another self, which is essentially the same. Lastly, I would argue that it is not only logically impossible to act without ego, but that it is not desirable –especially in a relationship. Honestly, who wants a partner who does everything for someone else, without having any justifiable demands?
  • 12. 12 | P a g e Chapter E – Attachment and Love Most of suffer in life because of confusion between love and attachment. Love is a positive quality of giving someone positive emotions without any expectation. But attachment is getting tied to a person or an object with the expectations that the person or the object will make us happy. Love never falls, but attachment causes bondage as well as disappointments and ultimately makes us sad. Most times we confuse attachment with love and therefore do not want to get rid of attachment despite being unhappy. Attachment is our strong preference for persons or the things which are perceived to be favourable to us. We all have fame, relatives, friends, and other. We hardly pause to think if they makes us more happy or unhappy. Most times, blind us in the process, so we tend to ignore the minus points of things or persons to which we are attached. Discrimination is lost when it comes to dealing with your attachment. So you suffer. Secondly, the more you are attached, the more you expect something out of that relationship. When these expectations are not met, it causes misery. How should we then deal with our relationships with family and others? Scriptures say one should have working relationships in life. We should avoid extremes that lead one to say: ‘I cannot live without you ‘or ‘go get lost’. Our approach should be ‘I care for you.’ We should behave like a managing trustee for our family, without feelings of ownership or possessiveness. Family members also need space in life. Attachment leads to clinging, which they do not appreciate. Instead of a controlling attitude, our attempt should be to be ready to do something for their welfare while giving them enough elbow room in life.
