INTRODUCTION
For Clear understanding of strength of material let us go little
back and understand mechanics.
Mechanics is the branch of science which deals with forces
and it's effects on a body. In mechanics we study mechanics of
solid and mechanics of fluids.
Strength of materials (SOM) is a branch of mechanics that deals
with the behavior of solid bodies subjected to various types of loading

Important of SOM in Engineering
•An understanding of mechanical behavior is essential for
the safe design of all types of structures, whether
airplanes, buildings, bridges, machines, motor or ships
and spacecraft.
• That is why strength of materials is a basic subject in so
