4. IMPORTANCE OF SOIL ORGAIC CARBON
LOW SOIL ORGANIC
CARBON
Hard crust formation Reduced air pockets
Reduced
drainage
Increase in salts
Compaction
Reduction in
beneficial microbes
Loss of important biochemicals that
determines fertility
Alkalinity
Water

Increase in
pathogens
5. FEATURES

8. SOIL SAMPLING.
1. soil sample should represents whole field
2. Should be taken before ploughing and irrigation.
3. Clean the area by removing all the debris around the pit.
4. Make V shaped pit (~20-30 cm deep).
5. Collect approximately 200-300 gm soil from the base of the pit
6. Divide this soil sample in to four parts.Take only two parts from
diagonally opposite side by discarding the two.
5. Repeat the above step 3-4 times till getting 50 gm sample.
Avoid: 1. Fertilizer bags for storing soil samples.
2. Soil samples from Field bands (Boundaries), Fertilizer/Compost
pits, Roadsides and Cattle resting sites.
9. TEST PROCEDURE
1. Take one spoon of soil.
2. Add 10 ml of solution A with syringe.
3. Add 10 ml of solution B with syringe.
4. Mix gently and allow it to stand for 10-15 min.
5. Filter through a given filter paper.
6. Compare the colour of the clean filtrate with colour
chart.
7. The organic carbon contents of your soil is the
assigned value of most matching colour on the
standard chart.

RECOMMENDATIONS
14. USER FRIENDLY SOIL ORGANIC CARBON DETECTION KIT
Organic carbon is an indicator element of soil fertility. Positive
correlation between carbon content and crop yield has been observed
all over world within different types of soil. Soil organic carbon
detection kit analyses carbon content of soil in the field and help the
farmer to decide the fertilizer doses quickly.
