Soil is defined as a natural body comprised of solids, liquids, and gases that occurs on the land surface and is characterized by horizons or layers. The upper limit of soil is the boundary between soil and air, plants, or decomposing plant materials, while the lower limit separates soil from non-soil materials below. Over time, climate, relief, and living organisms interact to alter the horizons near Earth's surface. A mature soil develops distinct horizons that differ in structure and organic/inorganic composition, with the A horizon rich in organic matter, the B horizon containing clay particles, and the C horizon comprised of weathered rock fragments.
