As Mills suggested in the above quote, this might require you to narrow your focus on the life of a homeless individual or to broaden your scope and look at a multinational corporation and its effect on the global economy. Then step back even further to consider how these two perspectives might influence the development of humanity as a whole. In this week's Discussion, we will start by looking at your own values and recognizing the personal experiences and cultural biases that might have affected them. Understanding how your values are shaped and affected can give you clues as to how your own culture and society forms views on similar issues. To prepare for this Discussion: Review pages 5 - 9 and 19 - 21 on social imagination in your course textbook. Consider how "common sense" knowledge affects your everyday decisions. Reflect on how the sociological imagination challenges certain core values and basic beliefs in one's own society and culture. With these thoughts in mind: a value of your own that you think studying sociology may challenge. Before the Industrial Revolution, people interpreted human social interactions and human society from the point of view of philosophy and theology . However, the Industrial Revolution disrupted the old patterns of human relationships and the routines of everyday life. For example, instead of farming in the countryside, many people settled in cities so they could work in factories. Because the old way of looking at social life didn’t work anymore, Auguste Comte (1798–1857) coined the name “sociology.” The Founder of Sociology: Auguste Comte Motivated by the political upheaval of the French Revolution as well as the societal changes created by the Industrial Revolution, Comte wrote six volumes about the social and scientific achievements of the world in which he lived. His insistence on systematic observation, experimentation, and historical analysis—called positivism —created the intellectual foundation for the science of sociology. Week 7, Reading Section 7.1: Introduction I. Introduction The Late-1960s and 1970s witnessed the arising of the Feminist Movements. One of the key causative factors, but by no means the only one, was the publication in the Late-1940s of Simone de Beauvoir’s The Second Sex. De Beauvoir, a Philosopher, Existentialist, and colleague and intimate of Jean Paul Sartre, wrote the book, because she recognized what she considered an odd phenomenon: when she was associated with Sartre and his work, she was respected by their colleagues. But when she ventured out, on her intellectual own, in non-collaborative works, she was not respected by those same colleagues. Deciding she wanted to examine the possible reasons for this discrepancy, she delved deeply, researched, came to certain conclusions, and wrote the book. And WHAT a BOOK! After investigating ancient and modern cultures, she concluded that the definition of what it meant to be “human” was set, in modern, paternalistic cultures by a male standard. In her words, “One is not born, but rather becomes, a woman.” She argued that woman was always “the Other,” “the Outsider,” to these male definitions of “human.” Put another way, men decided what it meant to be a woman. De Beauvoir argued for women’s equality with men. Twenty+ years after the publication of The Second Sex, a new Women’s Movement, referred to variously, as Second- or Third-Wave Feminism arose, first, in Europe and the United States, then in other parts of the World. Theorists re-examined, and, in the words of the French Philosopher, Jacques Derrida, “deconstructed” the major sub-fields of Philosophy, including Epistemology, Metaphysics, Cosmology, Ethics/Moral Philosophy, Social and Political Philosophies, Philosophy of Natural Sciences, Philosophy of Language, Philosophy of the Mind (Psychology), Philosophy of Religion. The variety and richness of the theories of Feminism are beyond the scope of this brief module. Rather, we shall focus on one or two particular forms of Feminist Ethics. (Like all other areas of Philosophy, there is not only one form of Feminist Ethics, Epistemology, Metaphysics, or Social or Political Philosophy, or of the other branches of Philosophy.) One of the theories we shall see is called the Ethics of Care, whose principal theorists are Carol Gilligan and Nel Noddings. The other theory is the Capabilities Theory of Martha Nussbaum. A sociological theory A sociological theory seeks to explain social phenomena. Theories can be used to create a testable proposition, called a hypothesis, about society (Allan 2006). Theories vary in scope depending on the scale of the issues that they are meant to explain. Macro-level theories relate to large-scale issues and large groups of people, while micro-level theories look at very specific relationships between individuals or small groups. Grand theories attempt to explain large-scale relationships and answer fundamental questions such as why societies form and why they change. Sociological theory is constantly evolving and should never be considered complete. Classic sociological theories are still considered important and current, but new sociological theories build upon the work of their predecessors and add to them (Calhoun 2002).

All teachers also create their own materials, whether a few sentences on a blackboard, a highly-structured fully-realised online course, or anything in between. Despite this, the knowledge and skills needed to create effective language learning materials are rarely part of teacher training, and are mostly learnt by trial and error. Knowledge and skills frameworks, generally called competency frameworks, for ELT teachers, trainers and managers have existed for a few years now. However, until I created one for my MA dissertation, there wasn’t one drawing together what we need to know and do to be able to effectively produce language learning materials. This webinar will introduce you to my framework, highlighting the key competencies I identified from my research. It will also show how anybody involved in language teaching (any language, not just English!), teacher training, managing schools or developing language learning materials can benefit from using the framework.

Letter from the Congress of the United States regarding Anti-Semitism sent June 3rd to MIT President Sally Kornbluth, MIT Corp Chair, Mark Gorenberg Dear Dr. Kornbluth and Mr. Gorenberg, The US House of Representatives is deeply concerned by ongoing and pervasive acts of antisemitic harassment and intimidation at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT). Failing to act decisively to ensure a safe learning environment for all students would be a grave dereliction of your responsibilities as President of MIT and Chair of the MIT Corporation. This Congress will not stand idly by and allow an environment hostile to Jewish students to persist. The House believes that your institution is in violation of Title VI of the Civil Rights Act, and the inability or unwillingness to rectify this violation through action requires accountability. Postsecondary education is a unique opportunity for students to learn and have their ideas and beliefs challenged. However, universities receiving hundreds of millions of federal funds annually have denied students that opportunity and have been hijacked to become venues for the promotion of terrorism, antisemitic harassment and intimidation, unlawful encampments, and in some cases, assaults and riots. The House of Representatives will not countenance the use of federal funds to indoctrinate students into hateful, antisemitic, anti-American supporters of terrorism. Investigations into campus antisemitism by the Committee on Education and the Workforce and the Committee on Ways and Means have been expanded into a Congress-wide probe across all relevant jurisdictions to address this national crisis. The undersigned Committees will conduct oversight into the use of federal funds at MIT and its learning environment under authorities granted to each Committee. • The Committee on Education and the Workforce has been investigating your institution since December 7, 2023. The Committee has broad jurisdiction over postsecondary education, including its compliance with Title VI of the Civil Rights Act, campus safety concerns over disruptions to the learning environment, and the awarding of federal student aid under the Higher Education Act. • The Committee on Oversight and Accountability is investigating the sources of funding and other support flowing to groups espousing pro-Hamas propaganda and engaged in antisemitic harassment and intimidation of students. The Committee on Oversight and Accountability is the principal oversight committee of the US House of Representatives and has broad authority to investigate “any matter” at “any time” under House Rule X. • The Committee on Ways and Means has been investigating several universities since November 15, 2023, when the Committee held a hearing entitled From Ivory Towers to Dark Corners: Investigating the Nexus Between Antisemitism, Tax-Exempt Universities, and Terror Financing.
