Lucien experienced discrimination from his classmates who gave him weird looks and made rude comments about him. Payne, who was attractive, sat next to Lucien and treated him nicely due to the halo effect, whereas Payne's friends showed prejudice against Lucien based on rumors. Lucien began using counterfactual thinking to regret becoming close with Payne after their relationship turned unexpected. Penny realized she treated Lucien unfairly out of jealousy and post-decision dissonance to make her decision to cheat on him seem better.
2. First concept:
Discrimination
• The behavior or actions, usually negative, towards an
individual or group of people, especially on the basis of
sex/race/social class, etc.
When Lucien stepped into the classroom, people gave him a weird look,
but he did not bother them. He could hear people gossiping about him,
and commented him rudely. His classmate even spoke rude words likes
dirty, disgusting and creepy to him.
3. Second concept:
The Halo Effect
A cognitive bias in which an observer's
overall impression of a person, company,
brand, or product influences the observer's
feelings and thoughts about that entity's
character or properties.
Payne, a handsome guy came into the classroom and directly sat besides
Lucien. He was attractive and good-looking. His handsome look caused
him to think that he was friendly. The fact was right. He really did not bother
about the rumors and treated him very nice.
4. Third concept:
Prejudice
• An unjustified or incorrect attitude (usually
negative) towards an individual based solely on
the individual’s membership of a social group.
Payne’s friends always advised him not to get too close with Lucien as
they thought he was a bad person. They told him if he befriended with
Lucien, his reputation would spoil too. Also, they thought that the aired sex
video that involved Lucien was clear enough to indicate Lucien’s bad
attribution.
5. Forth concept:
Counterfactual Thinking
• A concept in psychology that involves the human
tendency to create possible alternatives to life events
that have already occurred; something that is contrary to
what actually happened.
Lucien chose made a decision by avoiding Payne. He started to regret from
being too close with Payne. If only he did not accept his caring, he would
not need to face the confession. He began to think of how their relationship
went on and finally turned out to be an unexpected affair.
6. Fifth concept:
Post-decision Dissonance
• After we have made a decision, we will feel dissonance
regarding the possibility of it being wrong. We will often
change our perceptions to reduce this dissonance and
make the decision seem more attractive. ‘Sour grape’
effect.
Penny realised a complicated relationship between Lucien and Payne. She
judged and mocked them as being gay. She told Payne that how badly she
was treated, in fact that was not right. In fact, she was just jealous that
Lucien had a loved one who would protect him from being harmed by
others. She also regretted for cheating on Lucien as she was actually being
treated nicely.
7. Fifth concept:
Post-decision Dissonance
• After we have made a decision, we will feel dissonance
regarding the possibility of it being wrong. We will often
change our perceptions to reduce this dissonance and
make the decision seem more attractive. ‘Sour grape’
effect.
