■ The Internet has matured with billions of articles on almost any topic.
■ Viewing articles online is a great way to encourage reading in people's daily lives.
■ Social media also inspires people to write down their ideas and feelings.
■ People have also taught themselves a lot of useful skills by watching online videos.

Illiteracy:
■ We have found that there are many types of illiterate people .
■ What people mean, and the illiteracy where social media can help to solve them effectively.
■ Some illiteracy cannot be successfully solved through Social Media.
■ It depends on the mindset of the individual community.
■ Individual's self-esteem and what qualities he or she is endowed with.

11. WHERE DOES THIS ISSUE EXISTS ACROSS THE GLOBE?
■ Although this issue exist globally, yet there are some countries like Japan, Finland, and Canada
that have a literacy rate of nearly 100%.
■ This issue mainly exists in parts of Continents such as in South and West Asia, and in some parts
of Africa. Countries such as, Afghanistan, Central African Republic, Mali, South Sudan, etc.
■ About 773-781 million literal illiterate adults across the globe.
■ Literacy rate of Pakistan is 60%. Which means around 60 million people are illiterate out of which
46 million are women.
■ Punjab has the highest literacy rates (79%), which is followed by KPK (72%), Sindh (60%) and
lastly, Baluchistan(18- 25%).

■ Illiteracy has been there for centuries. But its context and method have changed with
time.
■ For example, people use to fight with swords before and now they fight and show
aggressiveness through social media.
■ With passage of time, advancements and due to cultural diversity, different forms of
illiteracies arose.

■ Lack of money and resources is the foremost reason for illiteracy in Pakistan.
• Even if someone has money, they lack resource (financial) management skills.
■ Due to many propagandas, the soviet union broke into many parts causing it to end.
■ Mughal emperor, Aurangzeb lost his whole empire due to multiple types of illiteracies (For e.q: Financial, etc.)
■ Many people can be specified to a type of illiteracy simply because of they don’t know about it, not by their
capability such as, old people.

■ QUESTIONNAIRE SURVEY :
• As a research method, the survey collects data from topics that answer a series of questions about
behaviour and ideas, usually in the form of a questionnaire.
■ INTERVIEWS:
• An interview is a one-person conversation between a researcher and a topic, and is a way of doing
research on a topic.
• They are mostly done privately.
16. HOW RESEARCH METHODS WERE USED ?
■ SURVEYS: Surveys use open-ended questions to produce longer / typed longer written
answers.
■ ONLINE SURVEYS: Open-ended questions will be presented to participants in an
email-based format or within an online assessment tool, often accompanied by multiple-
choice test questions on the same topic.
■ INTERVIEWS: We will design such an interview which will get higher source of
information about our topic in focus group.

■ In terms of knowledge, social media helps a lot such as helping you know the current situation.
■ Illiteracy is being unaware of what's happening around you, in your country, current affairs, how
things work, and advancements.
■ Not being able to distinguish between right and wrong.
■ Younger generation thought that social media has played a very crucial role in overcoming illiteracy
and personal grooming.
■ However, some think that it is an individuals will, whether he is using it to get some knowledge or
not.

■ Interviewees say that old people used mediums such as radio, reading or listening to
others such as your family, friends to get information about anything and get awareness,
but now everything is easily available on the web for the illiterate to acquire.
■ Similarly, some stated that things were easy in the previous era, and this era is far more
complex in terms of education and other aspects.
■ Social media is a form of informal education, where you can easily learn numerous
things.

■ Some think that illiteracy is just an excuse nowadays, everything is available on social
media, that you even take online courses of a university while living in Pakistan.
■ 70% percent of the interviewees think that social media has helped in overcoming
illiteracy, while 30% percent think that it has further contributed.
■ Nowadays, people just believe on social media without doing any further research.
■ Social media cannot directly contribute in eradicating illiteracy but can provide you
many sources (Websites, Apps, Articles, etc.) which can help improve literacy rate.

1. Encourage the establishment of national network of summer learning
programs.
2. Develop a children media related literacy organization.
3. Create initiatives at the district level.
4. Collaborate with media and technological industries.
5. Create online media and digital literacy tests.
25. Recommendations
It is depending on the students of Pakistan:
1. Students who are already enrolling in educational institutions should focus on
increasing their civic literacy.
2. As students are already using social media, so before believing on any information
which is on social media, they should verify the information through facts.
3. Students should be aware of their history, culture, religion and values which the society
has given them.
4. Poverty is the major issue of Pakistan so students should learn how to manage scarce
resources. (Financial Literacy)
5. IT illiteracy in older people is high so the younger generation should help them in
improving their IT literacy rate.
