The document discusses the concept of the American Dream in the historical context of John Steinbeck's novel "Of Mice and Men". It describes how from the 17th century immigrants went to America in search of a better life and fortunes, though for many this dream turned into hardship with events like slavery, the Civil War, and the Great Depression. The characters George and Lennie dream of owning their own farm with rabbits and achieving prosperity through hard work, representing the idealized American Dream, though the novel explores how realistic this dream is.

The Great Gatsby: A Failed American Dream
F. Scott Fitzgerald's The Great Gatsby mainly depicts the collapse of the American dream as seen with its hero and other characters. The American dream has been pursued by many even by those who are away from the US because of its promising and fulfilling nature that has kept people crossing the oceans to be in an environment that facilitates it. The Fitzgerald's The Great Gatsby depicts the concept of American dream but in a twisted manner that left many characters with unfulfilled life. Many characters in the novel such as Daisy Buchanan, Myrtle Wilson and Jay Gatsby set on journeys to pursue happiness in wealth but they are all mislead by their materialistic mindsets that leave them unhappy souls. In the early periods, the American dream provided hope to many people that have allowed them to achieve fulfilling lives, but as Fitzgerald's The Great Gatsby points it out this is no longer the case
First, the American dream has gone through many transformations since its inception in the 1770s by the Royal Governor of Virginia. However; it is also noted that the concept that shaped the American dream was the pilgrim that arrived in the United States to look for a better and much fulfilling life. Despite going through many changes, the ideology of the dream has remained that of a land with much better, richer and fuller life for every citizen. The dream grants everyone equal opportunity according to their abilities so that they can achieve a better and a much fulfilling life. The dream was even enshrined in the United States’ Declaration of Independence which held definite truths to be self-evident. The statement holds that “all Men are created equal, that they are endowed by their Creator with certain unalienable Rights, which among these are life, Liberty and the Pursuit of Happiness." In his book, The Epic of America, James Truslow Adams notes that the dream is quite challenging to comprehend especially amongst the European upper classes and some who people have become too weary and mistrustful of it. James notes that; “the dream is of social order that features every man and woman being in environment that allows them to attain to the fullest stature of which they are intrinsically capable of.” (Adams, 404). The author also notes that the dream depicts an environment where people are fully recognized of their capabilities and what they are without considering the fortuitous incidence of birth or position. In order for a person to realize the American dream, they have to generally hard work and remained determined in their pursuit of the dream. The pursuit of the American dream can be traced back to factors that prompted the first immigrants to come to the United States. The immigrants were in the pursuit of the American dream when they came to the United States to look for liberty, better life and happiness. The same ap ...

June 3, 2024 Anti-Semitism Letter Sent to MIT President Kornbluth and MIT Cor...Levi Shapiro
Letter from the Congress of the United States regarding Anti-Semitism sent June 3rd to MIT President Sally Kornbluth, MIT Corp Chair, Mark Gorenberg
Dear Dr. Kornbluth and Mr. Gorenberg,
The US House of Representatives is deeply concerned by ongoing and pervasive acts of antisemitic
harassment and intimidation at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT). Failing to act decisively to ensure a safe learning environment for all students would be a grave dereliction of your responsibilities as President of MIT and Chair of the MIT Corporation.
This Congress will not stand idly by and allow an environment hostile to Jewish students to persist. The House believes that your institution is in violation of Title VI of the Civil Rights Act, and the inability or
unwillingness to rectify this violation through action requires accountability.
Postsecondary education is a unique opportunity for students to learn and have their ideas and beliefs challenged. However, universities receiving hundreds of millions of federal funds annually have denied
students that opportunity and have been hijacked to become venues for the promotion of terrorism, antisemitic harassment and intimidation, unlawful encampments, and in some cases, assaults and riots.
The House of Representatives will not countenance the use of federal funds to indoctrinate students into hateful, antisemitic, anti-American supporters of terrorism. Investigations into campus antisemitism by the Committee on Education and the Workforce and the Committee on Ways and Means have been expanded into a Congress-wide probe across all relevant jurisdictions to address this national crisis. The undersigned Committees will conduct oversight into the use of federal funds at MIT and its learning environment under authorities granted to each Committee.
• The Committee on Education and the Workforce has been investigating your institution since December 7, 2023. The Committee has broad jurisdiction over postsecondary education, including its compliance with Title VI of the Civil Rights Act, campus safety concerns over disruptions to the learning environment, and the awarding of federal student aid under the Higher Education Act.
• The Committee on Oversight and Accountability is investigating the sources of funding and other support flowing to groups espousing pro-Hamas propaganda and engaged in antisemitic harassment and intimidation of students. The Committee on Oversight and Accountability is the principal oversight committee of the US House of Representatives and has broad authority to investigate “any matter” at “any time” under House Rule X.
• The Committee on Ways and Means has been investigating several universities since November 15, 2023, when the Committee held a hearing entitled From Ivory Towers to Dark Corners: Investigating the Nexus Between Antisemitism, Tax-Exempt Universities, and Terror Financing. The Committee followed the hearing with letters to those institutions on January 10, 202

2. Chasing the American Dream
• “Give me your tired, your poor,
your huddled masses yearning to
breathe free, the wretched refuse
of your teeming shore.
Send these, the homeless, tempest
tost to me,
I lift my lamp beside the golden
door.”
( Emma Lazarus)
Written on the base of the Statue of
Liberty
3. The American Dream
• You can be successful if you work
hard and live morally.
• America is the land of opportunity.
• Freedom to work hard and be happy
is enshrined in the Constitution.
• The Dream assumes equality of
opportunity, no discrimination,
freedom to follow goals and freedom
from victimization.
4. The American Dream
• From the 17th Century
onwards, immigrants
have dreamed of a better
life in America.
• Many people immigrated
to America in search of a
new life for themselves or
their families.
• Many others immigrated
to escape persecution or
poverty in their
homeland.
5. • Immigrants dreamed of
making their fortunes in
America.
• For many this dream of
riches became a
nightmare.
– there were horrors of
slavery,
– there were horrors of the
American Civil War,
– there was a growing
number of slums that were
just as bad as those in
Europe,
– there was also great
corruption in the American
political system which led
to many shattered hopes.
6. • The idea of an American Dream for
many was broken when in 1929, the
Wall Street crashed, marking the
beginning of the Great Depression.
• This era affected the whole world
during the 1930s, but even in the midst
of hardship, some people’s dreams
survived.
• Thousands of people made their way
west towards California to escape from
their farmlands in the Midwest that
were failing due to drought.
• The characters of George and Lennie
dreamt of having a “little house and a
couple of acres” which was their own
dream.
7. Is the American dream possible in the historical
context of the novel?
8. Dreams
• George and Lennie have a dream,
even before they arrive at their new
job on the ranch, to make enough
money to live "off the fat of the land"
and be their own bosses. Lennie will
be permitted, then, to tend the rabbits.
9. Dreams
• When George goes into a full
description of the dream farm, its
Eden-like qualities become even more
apparent. All the food they want will
be right there, with minimal effort. As
Lennie says:
– "We could live offa the fatta the lan'."
• When George talks about their farm,
he twice describes it in terms of things
he loved in childhood:
– "I could build a smoke house like the one
gran'pa had..."
• George yearns for his future to reflect
the beauty of his childhood.
– "An' we'd keep a few pigeons to go flyin'
around the win'mill like they done when I
was a kid."
