Mass Edu Data Challenge - Kick-off & Data Divecscranto
The Mass EduData Challenge - a six week “data challenge” - has launched! The event focuses on elementary and secondary school education - a top priority in Massachusetts. Schools in the Commonwealth’s 351 towns and cities annually generate over 75,000 new graduates, providing crucial skills for young people, and driving a fundamental investment in the Commonwealth’s 21st century workforce and economy.
This, the first-ever data challenge from the Massachusetts Department of Elementary and Secondary Education (DESE) seeks to improve understandings of DESE’s historical data and identify new and valuable patterns and insights to help inform education policy and increase public engagement with the Commonwealth’s education data. Participants are encouraged to (i) generate analyses and visualizations to better illustrate identified patterns, and (ii) to develop their own unique “lens” through which to analyze the data by choosing to focus on new relationships between data sets or by bringing in external data for comparison.
The six-week data challenge launched on May 28th and will close on July 8th with an awards ceremony event at hack/reduce in Cambridge, MA.. There are four prize categories: Best Use of Data [prize: $1,500 & a Google Nexus Tablet], Most Visually Compelling [$1,500 & a Google Nexus Tablet], Crowd Favorite [$1,000 & a Google Nexus Tablet] and Collaborative Data Contribution [$500].
This data challenge is driven through the Governor’s Mass Big Data Initiative and is organized in partnership with DESE, the Office of the Government Innovation Officer of Massachusetts, the Massachusetts Technology Collaborative and hack/reduce. Industry sponsors include HubSpot, Socrata and LearnLaunch.
Participants can register for the Mass EduData Challenge as a team or as an individual by visiting https://www.hackerleague.org/hackathons/mass-edudata-challenge and anyone can view the submissions as they come in and cast their vote for the data challenge winners.
Whether you’re competing in the challenge or watching the developers’ progress, it’s sure to be an exciting six weeks!
Introduction to Library Research Skills
How do I effectively and efficiently do research and navigate the college's online library?
This workshop will introduce you to the principles of academic research and show you how to best use the ESC Library resources to find sources and cite them in your academic papers.
Social networking services have been adapted by the academia and have been aptly termed academic social networking services (ASNS).
ASNS, may foster multi-disciplinary collaborations by providing a platform for researchers from diverse backgrounds to find one another and cooperate on issues of common interests.ASNs have for many become the primary way to provide access to one’s research output, outpacing all other types of online locations such as personal websites and repositories.
This presentation describes how two NSF-funded projects are using Web 2.0 (NING, Diigo, RSS, Goodreads, Shelfari) and National Science Digital Library (NSDL) tools and services to create and deliver science and math professional development and resources to K-8 teachers.
This presentation describes how to use the resources of the Sloan Work and Family Research Network to teach work and family classes. It highlights the resources that are most useful to the academic community.
This presentation provides in depth information on Illinois Open Educational Resources. This PPT reviews:
About Illinois Open Educational Resources (IOER)
IOER Tools
Learning Standards in IOER
IOER Widget Examples
IOER Integration with other ISLE Apps
How Schools Use IOER
STEM Learning Exchanges and Illinois workNet®
Outline of the UCSF approach to Research Networking, which focuses on rapid iterations of adding new data sources and features to see what works, and abandon what doesn't work.
Effective use of academic and social media networks for endorsing publicationsSC CTSI at USC and CHLA
Do you know how to effectively promote your publications? Researchers need to ensure that their research study has gained maximum visibility for both, significant impact on the academic community and increased citation count. “Digital networking” is a powerful means through which the academic community can boost the reach of their study. This webinar will give a detailed overview of the recommended strategies for effective research promotion on academic and social media platforms and optimizing visibility of the published articles.
After this webinar, researchers will have a better understanding of the following:
Understanding the significance of research promotion
Overview of traditional ways of research promotion
Popular academic and social media networks
Choosing the right channel for promotion
Drawbacks of using social media for academic purposes
Measuring the impact of the applied promotional strategy
ASCA's Mindsets and Behaviors competencies are excellent benchmarks to ensure student success in academics, careers, and social/emotional pursuits, but can be a lot for counselors and educators to take on. Learn how AchieveWORKS can personalize the ASCA competencies for students. AchieveWORKS assessments can make learning personalized by identifying focus areas so that students take ownership of the competencies they need most.

Discover the Simplified Electron and Muon Model: A New Wave-Based Approach to Understanding Particles delves into a groundbreaking theory that presents electrons and muons as rotating soliton waves within oscillating spacetime. Geared towards students, researchers, and science buffs, this book breaks down complex ideas into simple explanations. It covers topics such as electron waves, temporal dynamics, and the implications of this model on particle physics. With clear illustrations and easy-to-follow explanations, readers will gain a new outlook on the universe's fundamental nature.
