Instructions
This assignment has several warm-up activities and one main task. Please ensure you have completed each warm-up activity before completing the main task. The main task requires you to search for, and then analyze research from the library on a topic of interest in social work. This can be a topic you have investigated during your previous coursework.
Warm-up Activity 1: Getting Acquainted with the NCU Library
NCU Library is committed to supporting the academic research needs of students, faculty, and staff. The Library does this by providing timely access to quality, scholarly, and appropriate information resources and library services, such as reference, information literacy instruction, and inter-library loan services. Students also have access to highly qualified and experienced Library staff.
Library services include:
Research Databases
- Access to A - Z databases list from the library’s home page containing thousands of journals, magazines, newspapers, e-Books, dissertations, financial data, and other information resources available in the Library.
Inter-library Loan Service
(ILL) - Students needing articles, and book chapters not in the Library collection can submit an inter-library loan request. Students can register for the ILL service by clicking the “Request Inter-library Loan Items” link on the Library homepage. Students will need to utilize local libraries for print-only materials.
Ask a Librarian
- Students can receive library assistance 24/7 via the “Ask a Librarian” service. Ask a Librarian allows patrons to search an ever-expanding knowledge bank of frequently asked Library questions and their responses, conveniently located at the bottom of the blue, left-side toolbar located on every Library Guide. NCU Students, faculty, and staff may also complete an
Ask a Librarian Form
. Questions are answered promptly during Library Staffed Hours.
Research Consultations
- The Library offers a research consultation service for students, faculty, and staff. This is an in-depth, personalized, one-on-one meeting with a reference librarian to discuss possible information resources and search strategies for class assignments, papers, presentations, Masters theses, and doctoral dissertations.
Library Workshops
- Library workshops provide in-depth information about using library resources and services. Recorded workshops are available from the Learn the Library page. Students are strongly encouraged to view a Library workshop before beginning coursework.
Warm-up Activity 2: Considering Information Literacy
Read the Northcentral University Library page called
Research Process
and review various links and tutorials to prepare for using the library.
As you go through the rest of this assignment, you will be asked to use the Northcentral University Library to locate books, articles, and other appropriate online resources about family therapy. For this purpose, it is necessary for you to identify a topic that you wo.

Finding research articles
1 Why find research articles?
2 What is a research article?
3 Strategies to find research articles
4 Advanced search interface
5 Logistics of how to find full-text articles
6 How to read research articles
What is a research article?
Before we talk about how to find research articles, we have to
agree on what we're looking for. We're looking for scientific
truth. Where do you get it? From a Trustworthy Authority? Give
me a break! (see rant).
Scientific truth resides in research articles. A research article is
one that provides observations or the observed results of
experiments (not merely conclusions) and a description of how
the experiments were performed, in sufficient detail that
someone else might replicate them. You will recognize them by
the detail paid to the methods on which the results were based.
A news report of a scientific finding is not a research article. It
doesn't describe how to do the experiment. A review article is
not a research article. It combines lessons learned from multiple
research articles but, again, does not describe how to do the
experiments it covers.
Strategies to find research articles
If you know the exact title of the article you're looking for, then:

http://www.people.vcu.edu/~elhaij/bnfo300/17/Units/Intro-course/how-to-read-articles.html
http://www.people.vcu.edu/~elhaij/bnfo300/17/Units/Intro-course/trustworthy-authority.html
http://www.lib.utexas.edu/lsl/help/modules/review.html
• Your favorite search engine may be the fastest way to reach
the article (if you have its exact title). However, if you're
doing this from off-campus, the site you reach will not
recognize your IP address and not realize that you are a
member of the VCU community and thus deserving of the
full text of articles in journals to which VCU subscribes.
•
• VCU library general search facility is an excellent way of
getting most articles. If you are accessing it from off
campus, you'll be prompted for your eID and password if
needed. But no database is perfect, and you may sometimes
need to look elsewhere.
If you don't know the exact title, then:
• Using a search engines is generally a poor strategy -- too
low of a signal-to-noise ratio
•
• Google Scholar is much better but I haven't used it enough
to know how its database compares to others. Note that
Google Scholar allows advanced searches by clicking the
down arrow in the search box.
•
• For greater flexibility, try dedicated services, such as
PubMed and Web of Sciences.
There are two major strategies to use these indexes to find
research articles (plus one general fallback strategy):
• Keyword search: Looks for articles whose titles, abstracts,
or author lists contain a set of words that you supply. Used
by all the sites. This is what you're already used to.

This is a lesson in Research 1- Basic Research and is good for a 1.5 hours classroom activity. It covers images that can motivate undergraduate students from class participation during the class activity.
Entering words into a search engine is great for
finding a quick answer but it won’t always give
you the best evidence for your arguments. In this
session learn how to research rather than search for
the best information for your assignments.
Purpose:
- To introduce you to the need to properly research topics using online resources (although ‘Google’ is now a verb, it isn’t research)
- To equip you with the tools to critically evaluate research found online
- To enable your professional growth as a lifelong learner
Learning Objectives
At the end of this lecture the student should be able to:
- Perform complex searches using Google, Yahoo, Wikipedia and other tools
- Outline the benefits of bookmarking and research tools such as Delicio.us, Digg, and Stumbleupon, and use these tools
- Evaluate research found online for quality
- Properly cite and record online research when you find it using tools such as Evernote or OneNote

Unveiling the Secrets How Does Generative AI Work.pdfSam H
At its core, generative artificial intelligence relies on the concept of generative models, which serve as engines that churn out entirely new data resembling their training data. It is like a sculptor who has studied so many forms found in nature and then uses this knowledge to create sculptures from his imagination that have never been seen before anywhere else. If taken to cyberspace, gans work almost the same way.

6. RECOGNIZING A SCHOLARLY ARTICLE
Scholarly Articles Always:
Cite their sources in the form of footnotes or bibliographies
Are written by an authority or expert in the field whose credentials are prominently
stated
Often have a formal appearance with tables, graphs, and diagrams
The language includes specialized terms and the jargon of the discipline
Lengthy articles, usually more than 7 pages and often over 20 pages in length
Contain original research, experimentation, or in-depth studies in the field
Advertising is minimal or non-existent when you are looking at the print or PDF version
Not all scholarly articles are peer-
reviewed. All peer-reviewed
articles are
scholarly though.
8. ADDITIONAL SOURCES TO
HELP YOU ANALYZE CREDIBILITY
Critically Analyzing Information Sources (Cornell University Library)
Peer-Reviewed Materials (University of Illinois)
Journal Articles (Colorado State University)
Critical Evaluation of Internet Resources (University of Illinois)
How to Evaluate a Webpage (Colorado State University)
Once you have found some sources, you
need to evaluate them to determine
whether the information is
to your thesis.

11. TRY INTERLIBRARY LOAN!
"Interlibrary
loan is the
process by
which a library
requests
material from, or
supplies
material to,
another library.
The purpose of
interlibrary loan

26. IS GOOGLE SCHOLAR THE SAME AS GOOGLE?
http://scholar.google .com
Google Scholar is an online, freely accessible search engine that lets users look for both
physical and digital copies of articles. It searches a wide variety of sources, including academic
publishers, universities, and preprint depositories looking for:
• Peer-reviewed articles
• Theses
• Books
• Technical reports
• Abstracts
• Reprints
27. WHY A DATABASE MAY BE A
BETTER CHOICE THAN GOOGLE SCHOLAR
Databases:
provide the ability to focus search by subject area
allow users to sort results according to date and relevance
allow users to sort results by type of material (academic journal, magazine, newspaper, etc.)
contain the ability to limit searches by a variety of criteria
will never charge you for the full text of an article if the University of Illinois has a subscription to that database
As a student, you have access to countless databases that cover a wide variety of disciplines, areas that
may not be represented as well by Google Scholar.
Google Scholar:
does not contain an easy way to sort articles in your results list
may charge you to view the full text of an article you've found
does not clearly specify what type of material (academic journal, magazine, newspaper etc.) is in the results list
provides full text of some electronic articles but is not as helpful in tracking down print articles
Evaluate Your Sources: Whether you get
an article from a database or from
Google Scholar, make sure to evaluate it
to determine if it fits what you are
looking for.
32. USING SOCIAL MEDIA IN RESEARCH
Facebook
Society for Human Resource Management (SHRM)
Human Resources Management Reference Website
RSS Feeds
Society for Human Resource Management
Electronic Mailing Lists
HRDIV_NET
LinkedIn
Human Resource related groups
Online Groups
Google HR Groups
When using any of these sources, you MUST
evaluate them for credibility, the same way
you would any other source!
33. HUMAN RESOURCES DIVISION OF
THE ACADEMY OF MANAGEMENT
“The primary purposes of the Division are the encouragement of professional scholarship in personnel and
human resource topics by interested members of the Division and other members of the Academy of Management,
dissemination of results of this scholarship, provision for fellowship among persons with professional interest in
human resource topics, and engaging in related professional activities of interest to the membership.”
Subscribing to HRDIV_NET:
