Global costs, environmental, climate change, social and economic , of landfilling resources rather than using them for clean renewable energy needs to be revisited. It may initially cost on changing mindset and infrastructure, but it is the ethical leadership decision to make for the benefit and good of our communities, environments and fiscally straining service program budgets.
Energy innovation es8928 - renewable energy policy handbook -final m coviMarco Covi
A handbook for policy makers in the renewable energy field in Ontario. The handbook places a heavy importance on better consultation and public education on energy matters when it comes to the planning of large-scale energy projects and makes several suggestions on how to improve this. The handbook is timely as it was written in the context of the 2013 LTEP. In addition it serves as an accessible scientific reference guide for decision-makers and the broader public alike.
This seminar explores challenges, opportunities, and country examples that governments can consider using to ensure they deliver on the 2030 Agenda and the Paris goals.

U.S. cities and counties are important leaders when it comes to decarbonizing power at the local level. As more local governments become interested in driving decarbonization in their regions, engaging in energy issues at the wholesale electricity market level presents a new opportunity to expand their influence and impact.
Currently, businesses have access to robust information on physical water risk through resources such as the Aqueduct Water Risk Atlas — but there is no similar resource to assess the conditions around public water management.
World Resources Institute, Pacific Institute, and the UN Global Compact CEO Water Mandate are working with businesses to develop a database on public water management in the U.S. and Mexico.

The Smart Grid enables new business and operations models for the electricity supply chain. Microgrids offer great promise to embed new technologies in the distribution grid ranging from generation, energy storage, and intelligent consumption solutions.
Proponents of these technologies argue that they are capable of:
Improving overall reliability on both sides of the grid/microgrid junctures
Reducing operating costs
Expediting introduction of these technologies into the distribution grid – the weakest part of the supply chain in the developed world.
Offering cost effective and timely solutions to eliminate energy poverty – the lack of electricity - in the developing world.
Can one Smart Grid innovation have such broad applications? Our panel will explore the benefits of microgrids and the challenges to full realization of those benefits on a global basis.
In her panel, 'Energy Efficiency: Greatest New Resource", Callahan looks at the chief forcing mechanisms - regulations and financial incentives - that have effectively accelerated the deployment of energy efficieny in the U.S. Her presentation covers the recent history of energy efficiency in U.S. policy, marked by President Obama's energy platform and FY2010 budget, as well as his recent overhaul of corporate average fuel economy standards. Callahan also examines the wealth of energy efficiency funding included in the American Recovery and Reinvestment Act of 2009, and the potential for carbon emissions reductions in the House of Representative's American Clean Energy and Security Act of 2009.
Improving Electric Grid Reliability and Resiliency: Lessons Learned from Superstorm Sandy and Other Extreme Weather Events - Presentation by Becky Harrison, GridWise Alliance, at the marcus evans Distribution Technology & Innovation Summit 2014 held in Dallas, TX
Many large-scale energy customers, from local governments to corporations, have set ambitious clean energy goals. Utility investments in renewables in the overall generation mix are important to achieving them. But there can be a number of barriers to the inclusion of solar and other renewables in utility long-term planning, including cost and technology assumptions, modeling approaches and scenario development. Large-scale energy customers and utilities have an opportunity and are increasingly taking action to update practices and address these barriers.
This presentation highlights ways that solar energy is currently considered and can be improved in utility long-term planning, and how customers are engaging in these plans to advance their clean energy goals.
South Shore Clean Cities (SSCC), in partnership with the Northwestern Indiana Regional Planning Commission (NIRPC), presents the latest edition of its “Promoting Sustainability” webinar series “Solar Up Northwest Indiana.”

The webinar will cover: Northwestern Indiana Regional Planning Commission’s Rooftop Solar Challenge II Grant: Purpose and Goals, Rooftop Solar 101 Benefits and Barriers, Solar Myth Busters and Best Practices. SSCC and NIRPC will be assembling a stakeholder advisory group for this project.
A Brighter Energy Future for Regions: An Introduction to SolSmart’s Regional ...nado-web
Solar is becoming an increasingly popular option for communities and regions looking to diversify their energy supply, especially as the price of solar installations has continued to decrease. The SolSmart team works free of charge with communities and regions around the country to obtain Gold, Silver, and Bronze designations by incorporating best practices for solar planning, zoning, permitting, and inspection. This session will provide an overview of the SolSmart program and its benefits and highlight how regional development organizations can participate in the process and achieve designation.

Vote Solar's 2014 Annual Report.
Vote Solar is a grassroots nonprofit organization working to foster economic opportunity, increase energy independence and fight climate change by making solar a mainstream energy resource.
Welcome to the 2014 edition of Freeing the Grid, a guidebook and report for all 50 states on two foundational renewable energy policies: net metering and interconnection procedures.
In the eight years of Freeing the Grid’s production, there has never been a time when these policies have been the subject of as much public attention and debate as today. We hope that this objective resource continues to help policymakers, regulators and stakeholders cut through the noise, implement sound regulation, and build upon the exciting clean energy progress that so many states have achieved to date.
Kim Marousek - Setting the Stage for Regional Resiliencenado-web
As events over the past several years make all-too-clear, regions need to be better prepared to anticipate, withstand, and recover from multiple types of shocks and disruptions. Resilience planning and recovery will require regions to think creatively in the face of new and emerging threats. This session will highlight examples of how regions have responded to the current challenges of our time in creative and collaborative ways in an effort to become more resilient and better prepared for the future.

Located in Northwest Indiana, the Deep River-Portage Burns Waterway watershed drains nearly 180 square miles of primarily urban and agricultural land to Lake Michigan through the Portage Burns Waterway. In 2014, the Indiana Department of Environmental Management (IDEM) completed a yearlong baseline water quality study of 35 stream sites in the watershed. Based on the information they collected, nearly 233 miles of stream (80%) in the watershed will likely be included on the draft 2016 303d List of Impaired Waterbodies.
The Deep River-Portage Burns Waterway Initiative brings together local communities and organizations to begin restoring and protecting these waterways for current and future generations to enjoy. This webinar highlights some of the concerns raised by the public and the threats streams in the watershed face affecting recreational use and aquatic life.
The goal of the Green Fleet program is to significantly improve the environmental performance of business and government vehicle fleets across the region (Lake, Porter, and LaPorte) through diesel retrofits and other strategies.
Until July 10, 2015, Northwestern Indiana homeowners and businesses can sign up to install rooftop solar power more affordably and easily than ever through Solarize NWI.

In a May 9, 2024 paper, Juri Opitz from the University of Zurich, along with Shira Wein and Nathan Schneider form Georgetown University, discussed the importance of linguistic expertise in natural language processing (NLP) in an era dominated by large language models (LLMs).
The authors explained that while machine translation (MT) previously relied heavily on linguists, the landscape has shifted. “Linguistics is no longer front and center in the way we build NLP systems,” they said. With the emergence of LLMs, which can generate fluent text without the need for specialized modules to handle grammar or semantic coherence, the need for linguistic expertise in NLP is being questioned.
