How the web is becoming programmable #smw paris2013Mehdi Medjaoui
A keynote to understand how the web is becoming programmable through APIs.
Web APIs are a unique opprtunity for companies, governments and developers to either better organize the governance of their IT into a scalable and flexible model, either leverage a complete ecosystem around the organization, exchanging data through the web for trillion of applications on billion devices.
Because each civilization has been described by the way it communicates and make exchanges and trade, API are the beginning of a programmable civilization.
Every year, AppDirect explores the cloud service commerce industry from a unique perspective. Instead of focusing on end users, we evaluate how the biggest companies in the U.S.—the Fortune 500—are influencing application distribution and development.
Wearables provide benefits like context awareness, sensor integration, and simplified tasks. The presentation discusses using wearables with Salesforce, including "Wear Packs" for development. A demo shows a sales rep receiving a notification on a smartwatch to add a lead to a marketing campaign based on Salesforce data. It also summarizes communication architectures for integrating iOS and Android wearables with Salesforce.

It suggests classifying developers horizontally by company size and type, vertically by industry, modally by access levels, and tribally by programming languages and tools. Reaching different segments requires tailored approaches like incentives, meetups, contests and working with partners. Examples given are how Netflix targets developers for its public API but restricts access to streaming partners, and how Twitter encourages app creation through its public API and increased access for partners.
1. APIs are driving changes in software development by serving as reusable code libraries that developers integrate instead of downloading.
2. However, API-driven development can lead to suffering due to dependencies and breakages as APIs are imperfect and change over time.
3. Developers can reduce suffering by avoiding tight coupling, planning for failure and change, and using tools to monitor APIs and gracefully handle errors.
4. The path to reducing suffering is to follow principles of non-attachment to dependencies as well as wisdom, good behavior and focus, as in the Buddhist eightfold path.

How to build an API your developers will love - Code.talks 2015, Hamburg by M...Michael Kuehne-Schlinkert
In the last years API spread out around the world. Every modern application provides or consumes at least one API. It became very easy to setup an API, but it became even easier to build APIs no one really wanted to use. Especially if you are providing a public API, your API should be so user friendly that your mom could use it or at least an inexperienced developer who never used an API before. As an independent software engineer I have worked with various clients designing, building, testing, maintaining and even redesigning private and public APIs; starting from a simple API for Single-Page-Application to a highly scalable and complex kickass API serving millions of users every day.
In this talk I would like to share my experience from these projects giving some guidelines on API design and answering some questions which occur in every API project like "How can we provide this operation and still being RESTful?" or "How should we version our API?" Besides an admirable API Design Testing, Documentation and Mocking are always sticking points, which I want to demystify by sharing my handy approach. With this talk I want to inspire you to apply some of these techniques in your next API project.

This document discusses how tracking learning analytics with the Experience API (xAPI) standard can revolutionize internal training. xAPI allows learning experiences to be tracked consistently across systems and stored as statements in a Learning Record Store (LRS). This provides a more flexible and extensive approach compared to the older SCORM standard. An LRS can integrate data from various sources like LMSs, CRMs, and mobile apps to provide insights into learning effectiveness, performance, and recommendations. Examples show how xAPI enables analyzing e-learning usage patterns in detail, powering gamification systems, and linking sales data to training completion. Implementing a full xAPI solution involves deciding what data to track, setting up an LRS, and ensuring activity

Here are my slides of how to send xAPI (TinCan) statements over to an LRS. This is a brief overview of the concept and then download files have walk through examples.
The Experience API (xAPI), also known as Tin Can API, is a new e-learning standard that improves upon SCORM by allowing for statement, history, device, and workflow freedom. It tracks learning experiences across multiple systems through core API statements that follow an actor-verb-object format. Several countries and organizations are developing applications and tools to support xAPI. While opportunities exist, challenges include ensuring security, agreeing on activity definitions, managing data growth, and developing complex reporting. More information can be found on the Advanced Distributed Learning and Rustici Software websites.

The Impacts of the Tin Can API: How 8 Companies are Using the Tin Can API (xAPI)Rustici Software
The Tin Can API is having major impacts on the direction of the e-learning industry.
Organizations and vendors of various types are rushing to adopt Tin Can because it enables many things they have wanted to do for a long time. Things like mobile delivery, offline delivery, serious games and hosting content outside the LMS were all difficult or impossible with SCORM. These are easy with Tin Can.
This webinar lets you get an in-depth look at what Tin Can means to various types of software and organizations, and learn what you need to be doing to make sure that you're keeping up with the trends that Tin Can has enabled in our industry. It features eight companies, each of which will tell you how they're using the Tin Can API, and what it means for their business.

GAFAnomics: Using APIs to gain unfair competitive advantage in the network ec...Fabernovel
At FABERNOVEL, we’re convinced APIs are a powerful lever for traditional companies willing to enter and thrive in a world dominated by the GAFA (Google, Amazon, Facebook, Apple), Unicorns (Uber, Airbnb…), Chinese giants (Alibaba, Tencent…) and all similar actors that have deeply changed the way goods and services are produced, shared and distributed.
As outlined in our latest study, these new players share one common feature: they’re all structured as networks, connecting individuals, businesses, information and goods to one another.
This document discusses trends in APIs to expect in 2012. It predicts that enterprise APIs will go mainstream, with 30% of enterprises implementing APIs and 60% considering them. It also suggests that APIs will become the default access point for backend systems, and that API-centric architecture will focus on integration with apps and developers rather than people or processes. Additionally, it proposes that data will be brokered through APIs using free and paid models, and that enterprises will enable their data through RESTful APIs.
The document discusses mobile applications and the opportunities they present for digital consumers and businesses. It introduces Flypp, a white labeled mobile application platform that empowers mobile operators to monetize digital consumers through experiential applications. Flypp provides a rich application portfolio, ecosystem management, and application retailing and marketing support. It allows operators to launch a universe of applications to their customers across multiple devices.
To keep pace in a rapidly evolving marketplace, organizations must innovate faster than ever.
Companies today are making their services and data available through web APIs to internal and
external developers, creating higher value and new ecosystems. In this paper, we’ll discuss the
transformational effect APIs have had in the marketplace at large, the data they’re capable of
uncovering, and how companies are applying that data to create intelligent APIs to drive business.
Two weeks ago we released an infographic showing the life of a normal person as we imagine it in 2025. The kinds of automated services illustrated in that graphic that will appear over the next decade are all enabled by the same piece of technology: the API. What APIs, or Application Programming Interfaces, do is provide programmers with a simple way of connecting their programming into the data and services of an existing program. Any websites that embed Google or Facebook logins are accessing an API provided by Google or Facebook to authenticate users' identities. Similarly, as personal data becomes stored in the cloud, companies with permission to access such data are increasingly plugged in to their consumers' changing status and needs.
Beyond just explaining how APIs are driving technological advancements across every industry, our latest Digital Lab Thought Piece provides useful tips for any business on navigating a world based on APIs - whether that means activating the APIs that are already out there, or building one of your own to create new revenue stream or make your services indispensable.
Open APIs - building a community around your productbenm4nn
This document discusses how organizations can build communities around their products by creating open APIs. It notes that APIs are becoming a new way for businesses to deliver value and transform themselves. The document outlines a 5 step process for creating an API economy: 1) start with data, 2) design the API, 3) reach developer communities, 4) allow the API to be mixed with others, and 5) monetize the API. It encourages organizations to create APIs as new products and provides resources for getting started with API development on IBM Bluemix.
The document discusses how telecommunications companies (telcos) can adapt to changing technology and business trends. It notes that consumers are shifting to mobile devices and internet-based apps, which are powered by APIs. To keep up, the document recommends that telcos treat every service as an API and app, support external innovation through accessible APIs, and compete globally like internet companies by adopting agile techniques. It argues that telcos' advantages include retail relationships and infrastructure, but that they need clarity on business goals and metrics to measure API success through adoption, monetization, and other factors.

Will we still be talking about APIs, API management, etc in a few years from now? What role do APIs play in a multi-channel distribution play?
"APIs: the Glue of Cloud Computing"
CloudExpo Europe Keynote - June 22, 2010
The second day of the CloudExpo Europe that was taking place in Prague the 21st and 22nd of June, Steven Willmott, the CEO of 3scale, made a presentation on APIs and their importance for Cloud Computing.
The key highlights of this presentation are:
1. Cloud Computing pushes to the “hyper integration” of the Web and the enabling of key platform to emerge (e.g. the new SkypeKit)…. But not only for computing power
2. Cloud Computing and its different elements fit into an MVC “Cloud Edition” framework thanks to APIs
3. APIs enable Cloud Scale MVC
4. You need to become indispensable in the Value Chain otherwise someone may eat your lunch
5. APIs are key to become indispensable but need to be managed
The document discusses the rise of APIs and their importance for businesses. It defines APIs and explains how they allow modularization and standardization, like in other industries. APIs are becoming more critical as they allow companies to unlock digital assets and reach customers indirectly. The future of APIs includes areas like standardization, service level agreements, automated service brokering, and programmer-less stitching of services. The document recommends companies identify core digital assets, develop API-based business strategies and models, and work with 3scale to implement an API initiative and maximize potential.

Hand Rolled Applicative User ValidationCode KataPhilip Schwarz
Could you use a simple piece of Scala validation code (granted, a very simplistic one too!) that you can rewrite, now and again, to refresh your basic understanding of Applicative operators <*>, <*, *>?
The goal is not to write perfect code showcasing validation, but rather, to provide a small, rough-and ready exercise to reinforce your muscle-memory.
Despite its grandiose-sounding title, this deck consists of just three slides showing the Scala 3 code to be rewritten whenever the details of the operators begin to fade away.
The code is my rough and ready translation of a Haskell user-validation program found in a book called Finding Success (and Failure) in Haskell - Fall in love with applicative functors.
