The document describes a smart water valve that is designed to prevent water damage from issues like leaks or continuously running toilets. It works by learning the normal fill time for an appliance, like a toilet, and shutting off the water if it detects flow for longer than expected. The valve uses magnetic sensing of water flow and patented latching technology to operate reliably. It is aimed at helping to reduce unintended water loss and damage in homes and businesses.

In this presentation, I defined the “Smart Water Network Revolution” and the benefits it is bringing, talked about how policy-makers and water professionals can and should help it along, and did my best to dispel the four great myths about water utilities and adoption of data technology:
Water utilities are too conservative or low-tech to adopt such technology
Water is a low-value commodity, therefore not a magnet for industrial R&D innovation
Water utilities are not yet ready for “smart data systems”
It’s too big an investment

Search and Society: Reimagining Information Access for Radical FuturesBhaskar Mitra
The field of Information retrieval (IR) is currently undergoing a transformative shift, at least partly due to the emerging applications of generative AI to information access. In this talk, we will deliberate on the sociotechnical implications of generative AI for information access. We will argue that there is both a critical necessity and an exciting opportunity for the IR community to re-center our research agendas on societal needs while dismantling the artificial separation between the work on fairness, accountability, transparency, and ethics in IR and the rest of IR research. Instead of adopting a reactionary strategy of trying to mitigate potential social harms from emerging technologies, the community should aim to proactively set the research agenda for the kinds of systems we should build inspired by diverse explicitly stated sociotechnical imaginaries. The sociotechnical imaginaries that underpin the design and development of information access technologies needs to be explicitly articulated, and we need to develop theories of change in context of these diverse perspectives. Our guiding future imaginaries must be informed by other academic fields, such as democratic theory and critical theory, and should be co-developed with social science scholars, legal scholars, civil rights and social justice activists, and artists, among others.

"Impact of front-end architecture on development cost", Viktor TurskyiFwdays
I have heard many times that architecture is not important for the front-end. Also, many times I have seen how developers implement features on the front-end just following the standard rules for a framework and think that this is enough to successfully launch the project, and then the project fails. How to prevent this and what approach to choose? I have launched dozens of complex projects and during the talk we will analyze which approaches have worked for me and which have not.

For home or business, a solution
for problems that cause water
damage or water loss.
• Details on the types of problems
Smart Water Valve solves
• Details on how it works.
• Details on the unique patented
technology
2. Introduction – Goals / Objectives
Castlebridge Enterprises, Inc. is an environmental
care, technology development partnership with a goal
of developing innovative solutions and products that
conserve water, and mitigate water damages by
reducing unintended water loss.
Innovation and development was sparked by the
partners’ own personal experiences in which
unintended water loss and property damage
occurred. This, they learned, was a commonly shared
problem.
When searching for a solution, they could not find a
simple and practical product available on the market.

4. Market Background
Many water conservation efforts are directed at reducing
the use of water by limiting volume or flow of water.
Examples of this are low volume flush toilets and low flow
shower heads.
Little has been done to limit water consumption and
damages in situations where something has gone terribly
wrong. Examples of these are; toilets that continue to run
and broken or ruptured connection hoses.
Insurance industry studies find these failures are the
major reason for insurance damage claims.
In many situations the water may just continue to run for
days, unnoticed and undetected. Even the smallest leaks
can add up to thousands of gallons a month.

5. Real Problems – Smart Water
Valve is the Answer
Burst Supply Lines or leaking fittings.
Water spills and overflows onto the floor
Toilets with Flushing Valves that hang-up and
water continues to run down into the bowl
undetected for hours.
Toilets that have developed a leak past the
Flushing Valve and a cyclic slow drain down
and refill of the Tank occurs
Toilets will faulty Refill Valves and the water
continues to run and goes down the overflow
tube into the bowl undetected for hours.
11/2/2016 Confidential 5
8. Principle of Operation
The Smart Water Valve determines the fill time, or
normal use cycle, required to operate the water
appliance.
For example: When the toilet is flushed, it will time
the refill event and add a convenience factor of 150%
to the fill time. This calculated set time is to
accommodate occasional back to back flush
sequences and avoid inconvenience for the user.
In normal operational use, with the onset of water
flow, the Smart Water Valve compares the actual
elapse time to the set time it has stored for the water
appliance.
If the water flow continues, (even those flows in the
drips /sec range) and the elapsed time exceeds the
set time the Smart Water Valve will close, stopping
the water flow to the appliance.

Normal Operating State
• Water flows through the valve
body past the valve plug and seat.
• Water flow moves the flow
detection ram into coil magnetic
field, altering coil inductance.
• Microprocessor detects inductance
change, starts timer and checks
against initial set-up time
Closed State
• Microprocessor determines that
the flow exceeded initial set-up
time.
• Microprocessor sends signal to
energize actuate coil, releasing
Actuate Lever
• Actuate Lever moves to visible trip
position, and plug moves to close

◦ Detecting water flow at the start and end
of a water use cycle is critical. Sensing
flows as small as 10 drips/sec. is
accomplished by using a ferrous Flow
Ram that is moved by the flow of water.
As the Flow Ram moves, the measured
coil inductance increases.
◦ The result is a very repeatable and dependable flow detection
method without hysteretic effects seen in discrete switch flow
rams.
◦ The Flow Ram is the only wetted moving part.

Actuate Lever Mechanism
◦ The Actuate Lever is held in the “Latched
Position” by a permanent magnet, core,
and pole piece. No battery power is
consumed to securely maintain the
Actuate Lever in the "Latched" state.
◦ The Actuate Lever is toggled to the “Un-
latched position” when the
Microprocessor signals to electrically
energize the coil, This counters the
permanent magnet in the circuit and
releases the Actuate Lever to toggle to
the “un-latched” position, allowing the
plug stem to travel to the closed position.

example, flush the toilet. After holding test/set button for 3 sec, 1 audible beep is
heard followed by green LED flash every sec until flow is detected then red LED flashes
until flow event has ended. Water valve automatically set flow duration time and exits
Set Mode.
◦ Test Mode (close valve)
Press and release Set-Up/Test button for < 3 sec. Audible beep is heard and the valve
automatically trips and closes. Valve can be reset (open) by manually rotating up the
Actuate Lever.
◦ Flow Detect-(normal operation)
Green LED Flashes 1 time every 4 seconds while flow is ongoing.
◦ Flow Detect-(abnormal, flow exceeds preset time)
Green LED Flashes 3 times, simultaneously with 3 audible beeps, actuate function
closes valve.
◦ External Leak Detect 1-(leak detected but no flow is detected)
Red LED Flashes 1 time every 4 seconds for as long as leak is detected for up to 10
min. No other action taken.
◦ Eternal Leak Detect 2 -(leak detected for more than 10 min or if flow is also detected)
Audible beep 3 times and Red LED flashes 3 times,. Indicates that leak has been
detected and valve will actuate.
◦ Cyclic Leak Detect-(Water used on a periodic basis, like a leaking flushing valve)
Audible Beep 3 times each beep followed by Red and Green LED Flashes. Followed by
actuate function which closes valve.
◦ Change Batteries

normal operating state Water flow moves the flow detection ram into coil magnetic field, altering coil inductance. Microprocessor (muP) detects inductance change, starts timer and checks against user selected fill time
closed state muP sends signal to energize actuate coil, releasing magnetic latch
Flow Detection Sensor Detecting flows as small as 5 drips/sec using a ferrous Flow Ram paired with an electro-magnetic circuit. During a flow event, the Flow Ram bridges an air gap in the magnetic circuit, increasing flux through the magnetic circuit, increasing inductance measured across the coil. The result is a very repeatable and dependable flow detection method that lacks the hysteric effects seen in discrete switch flow rams. The ram is the only wetted part, no permanent magnet in the flow path reduces the risk of blockage.
The Magnetic latch is held in place by completing a magnetic circuit composed of a permanent magnet, coil, core, and pole piece. During normal operation, the magnetic latch is securely held in the "Latched" state by the permanent magnet. The coil is off, no battery power is consumed to maintain the "Latched" state. The Magnetic Latch toggles to the "Unlatched" state when the Microprocessor sends a signal to electrically energize the coil. When energized, the coil magnetically counters the permanent magnet preventing flux from flowing through the magnetic circuit. The absence of flux flow stops the attraction between the magnetic circuit and magnetic latch, allowing the magnetic latch to toggle to the "Unlatched" state. This latch system eliminates sliding and interference components, minimizing friction and electrical power needed to toggle states. This design works reliably at 1.5V, driven by very simple electronics.
Another big market Google can wedge itself into that takes even better advantage of Nest’s place in the home is with insurance companies. Nest device information, while redundant with some of Google’s info, is unique in some ways.
The Nest Protect, the company’s smoke detector, will be able to tell Google unequivocally when there has been a home fire, or a carbon monoxide leak, even when the home owner does not report it. A Nest thermostat could tell when the heat breaks, and by extension when the pipes freeze, or when the power goes out. This is all information that insurance companies would love to get their hands on. And insurance is not a small business: the top five companies in direct premiums written for home insurance made a collective $171 billion in revenue in 2011 (though not all of it was through home insurance).
Like we discussed Tuesday, I don't think we need to change anything in the prototype, but it is something we should be prepared to talk about. Here's a link to the article:
