Editor's Notes

  • #2 \n
  • #3 Yes, social media, like facebook, byandlarge was created for young people, like myself, to stay connected to each other no matter where in the world we are. However, shortly after the rise, if not the creation of social networking sites like facebook and twitter, companies clued into the literal mine of communication that the sites provide. Think about this, how likely are you to stop and read an entire billboard on i35 on your way to the office on a Monday morning as you *ahem* weave in and out of traffic? Right, not very likely. However, how likely are you to click on a icon, to the right of your facebook page as you troll through its pages fifty minutes later while you sit at your desk, during a boring moment? Right, much more likely. \n

  • #7 The reason why I say that is first and foremost to allow you to put your own thoughts and ideas out there - companies want to know what you're thinking before they hire you. Better yet, they want to know that you can use these types of technologies without completely losing all brain function.\n
  • #8 There are social media aspects like SEO levels, RSS feeds, klout scores, microsites, CRM, CSS and more that will lead you into the deep, dark end of the algorithms that have everything to do with your standing in a google search and nothing at all to do with being understood. Today we're only going to go over the top 4. Linked in, Paul already touched on, but the following two in your job search should be twitter and facebook. \nBlogging or your own website isn't necessarily social media but included for those entrepreneurial types would would benefit for that kind of site.\n

  • #18 The basic MO for twitter pages is you're looking for correlated twitter pages: those that are tweeting about the same subjects you are. If you're tweeting about resume building tips, you don't need to follow ten twitter pages that talk about the best way to prune your orchid garden. However, on the flip side, if you have an orchid growing business, then you sure enough want to be following fifty gazillion other gardening tilted pages for the sheer reason that they will, most likely, follow you in turn.\n\n
  • #19 I've heard from infrequent facebook (and reluctant twitter users for that matter) "But I don't know what to say!!" Think of it as a wonderful opportunity to practice repping yourself as you would in an interview. If you need to, make your first post your 10 second interview!\n\n

  • #24 While change is good and will keep your visitors interested, the very last thing you want is frustrated visitors because the colors, scheme, and location of pages keeps changing. While a site-wide makeover is perhaps necessary every odd once in a blue moon over Hawaii (i.e. not very often) small changes or adjustments (especially edits!!) are acceptable.\n\n
  • #25 If you are creative type, like myself, you have to be careful with the "creative" aspect of the website. I have a tendency to "make it pretty!" and completely overshoot the whole "simple, but memorable" challenge. The key is to catch the hiring manager's eye but not scare her.\n\n

  • #28 Employers, essentially, want to know what your drama is before adding you to their drama. The key to smart social media in your job search: DON'T put your drama out there. If you already have drama out there, (college partying pictures, beach baby pics, lewd wall posts to or from you, etc.) clean it up, quick.\n
