What is a Smartphone anyway…?
We are going to be talking about small, portable
electronic devices that connect to the Internet
Smartphones are not all alike…
Newer models vs older ones
iPhone vs Android and Windows or others
Much of what I will show you will be Android
because that is what I am currently using
Most things will apply to iPhone as well but they
are not fully interchangeable.

Today’s session is intended to be an
introduction…
This is not intended to be a hands on session where
you will follow along on your phone.
What I hope to accomplish today is to demystify the
smart phone a little.
If you haven’t bought one yet, you may decide
whether it is worthwhile for you
If you have one already, I hope that I will share
some ways of using it that will help you feel more
empowered, and have more fun.

Just like anything else in your life,
the key is moderation…
Why do I mention this? Because it is a common
concern that the use of a smart phone will force you
to be “on call” all the time, that you will not have
peace and quiet.
In my opinion, you have the control over the use of
your phone. If you are sitting in a restaurant, having
a meal, or a coffee and the phone rings, you can
choose to answer it or not. Likewise, you do not
have to respond to every email, text message or
facebook post, etc. if it is not your wish to do so.

What if you have some other kind of
device but not a “Smartphone?”
If you have an iPad or Kindle Fire or some
other tablet that is not a phone, most of what
we are going to talk about will still apply to you.
The difference is whether you can easily use it
when you are out and about, or whether you
need WIFI.

WIFI and “the Cloud”
WIFI is a commonly used term to mean that you can
access the Internet without a wired connection
(wirelessly)
Most smart phones have both WIFI and 3G. The 3G,
which we won’t get into, is what provides the phone
service. If you have an unlimited data plan, then for
practical purposes, you won’t really care if you on
using WIFI or your 3G, but if you have to pay for the
use of the data being transferred when you are not
connected via WIFI, you will want to pay attention to
whether you have a WIFI connection or not.

Don’t be intimidated by “the Cloud.”
When we say “the Cloud,” we are talking about
the “stuff” that you are connecting to via your
phone or computer. Like your Gmail. Or Google
searching.
Nowadays, we use the Cloud to save stuff we
used to save on our computers. Why, because we
can. Because connections are so much faster, we
don’t have to store everything on our computer,
and maybe our data is more secure, since it is
being backed up regularly.

OK, let’s start talking about apps

screen on my phone
It is set up like a grid
The little pictures are called icons
and they represent apps.
Each one is a different app.
Apps are programs that can do
various tasks and functions for us.
The top part with the clouds is
called a widget. Widgets are like
mini-apps that run all the time
even when you don’t open them.

Icons can be organized in any
way you choose.
I like to group them by
functionality.
The ones on the bottom, are
accessible from every screen.

The icons make the programs
easy to access.
Smart phones nowadays use a
touch screen.
That means instead of clicking
or double clicking we use taps,
or holds, or other gestures like
pinching.

My Google page
I find the various google apps
very useful. So I grouped them
together, except for Google
Maps, which is on my home
page for convenience.
Google translate is amazing and
be used via speaking or talking.

My Tech Tutor page
(convenient because I can scroll left to
get to it right away – so it is my last
screen but it functions like my second
screen too)
I can access my website and
blog from here.
Also a widget to control Google
music player.
I really like my Walking mate
widget (part of Samsung S
Health).

There are apps that let you edit
photos right on your phone.
Save them, crop them, apply
filters like this one of me.
In this case, I did this right in the
Gallery app that comes with the
Android phone.
You can also organize your
photos into folders.
And back them up to the Cloud
using Dropbox or OneDrive or
some other service.

Your phone can help you navigate whether by walking,
driving, or as I do mostly, by bus!
The next series of slides is going to show you how Google
Maps, Moovit and your own eyes on the street can help you
find the right bus stop, on the right side of the street, going
in the right direction.

First I use Google Maps to figure
out the location of the place I
need to go – and choose the
route that makes the most sense
to me. Google includes trains
too.
Then I may use Moovit to find
out the bus times.

I can see
from the map
that the bus
is nearby
even before it
turns the
corner

There is a bus stop number
on the sign and a bus stop
number in the app. Voila! No
more getting on the bus
going in the wrong direction!

Note that the app indicates the to and from
for the bus. It also shows you the bus
stops along the way. So you can make
sure you get on the right bus, in the right
direction. And you will know the exact
name of the bus stop, because if you used
Google Maps, it told you the name.
But wait, wait! There’s more! The new
version of Moovit, will tell you when to get
off the bus!
Touch the “play” button in the upper right
hand corner when you board the bus.

Of course
the app
doesn’t
read your
mind. You
have to tell
it you are
on the bus
and select
your
destination.

Google Maps will
tell you where to
walk. It will talk to
you. It can show
you your position
so you can see if
you are walking in
the right direction.

OK, enough about
navigation…
Let’s look at some other (even seemingly
mundane) apps and functions to give you a
quick idea of their purpose and why you
might want them or what you might do with
them.

traditional alarm

Other ways I use the clock:
Timer for baking or for other time
sensitive meetings
Add reminder to alarm to take
something with me
Reminder to do something

One of my favorite
apps is Evernote
But first, do you see that it
says “copied to clipboard?”
Screen shots are great
tool. To capture something
you are seeing that you
want to remember.

A screen shot can be very
handy
Sometimes I want to make sure that I will find
my way, or be able to find an invitation or
such and I might lose the piece of paper, or I
might not have connectivity when I need it.
If I have a photo on my camera, I have a
record that I can use as a reference.

One of my favorite
apps is Evernote
Evernote is a great way to
remember and organize
information of any kind.
Words, audio, video. From
the web, from an email,
you name it. And to be able
to find it again!

It’s not just for taking photos of people or
vacations. I take photos of all kinds of things.
1. A sign that I don’t have time to decipher
2. A store that I want to come back to and I
want to remember the surroundings
3. An item that I might want to buy later
4. An excerpt from a book I am reading

investigate before I buy it
6. Something my husband or son might
want or be interested in seeing
7. An error message on my computer
8. Beautiful flowers or interesting sights
9. A medical document that I have to turn in

other than the shekel, it
can be very helpful to be
able to translate at current
rates.

and your relationship
with them.

In most email apps, you
can have more than one
email account if necessary.
So business can be
separate from personal…
As in many things in life,
and most things
technological, there is
more than one way to
accomplish a task.

This is the built in email app. Why
do I use it in addition to the Gmail
app? For starters because I have a
Yahoo email account too. And also
because I have my business email
from my website.
So now you will know why I might
not answer right away. Way too
much email. But that is a subject
for a different time.

On the contrary, I recently deleted Facebook
Messenger when I realized that they were
asking for way more access than they need
to function and I consider it an invasion of
my privacy for them to use my private
information for their purposes, not for my
convenience.

you track down your phone,
or wipe its memory, if you
lose it, so that sensitive
information does not fall into
the wrong hands.
What is sensitive? How
about being logged into your
email or other accounts on
your phone?

Possibly you have already
had someone share a
document or a picture with
you using Google Drive… It
allows you to view, possibly
edit documents and
spreadsheets and
presentations. Free. Even
read a Microsoft Word or
Excel document.
