Indian cities are increasingly designed for vehicles rather than people, leading to unsafe conditions for pedestrians and cyclists. Roads are overcrowded and lack proper footpaths, street lighting and signage. Public transportation is also often overcrowded and unsafe. To make cities safer, urban planning must prioritize people over vehicles by improving mass transit options and pedestrian infrastructure like wider footpaths and better bus stops. Unauthorized housing and slums also need improvements to basic sanitation, fire safety standards, and disaster preparedness. As India launches new urban development programs, ensuring city safety should be a top priority.
