How do people drive transformation? Fluxx & Ashridge researchAdam Sweeney
The document discusses effective change initiatives and what makes them succeed. It found that across diverse sectors, effective change projects and leaders start with people. They challenge assumptions but do so gently. Their secret is movement building by finding and empowering internal influencers from across the business to build momentum for change. However, influencers can only succeed with aligned leadership and a clear business need driving the change initiative. The document then describes The Influencer Programme created with Ashridge Business School to help any business recruit and train influencers to drive cultural change through a live project over 6 months.

This document discusses social network analysis and how it can be used in organizations. Social network analysis maps relationships and information flows between employees. It can identify different types of employees like brokers, connectors, listeners, sensors, change agents, leaders, bridges, and innovators. Social network analysis can help organizations identify high potential leaders, successfully implement initiatives, identify employee strengths, address challenges, and improve communication. It works by mapping employee connections and identifies important roles within the organization.
This document discusses how adopting a "Connected Community Culture" can help organizations address common issues like lack of purpose, collaboration, and innovation through social technologies and mass collaboration. It argues that a Connected Community Culture occurs when organizations intentionally harness social capabilities to align culture with strategic goals and unleash collective potential. This represents the next evolution from traditional "Command and Control" cultures to high-performance cultures. By bringing together purpose, community, social technology, and mass collaboration, organizations can achieve "Strategy Ownership" - aligning culture with strategy to drive great outcomes by fostering ownership, ability, and accountability among employees. The key roles of leaders are to start the right conversations, link activities to vision and purpose, and actively participate in

This document discusses the challenges social workers face with current case management systems not supporting their work with families. It notes that social workers spend 60% of their time on administrative tasks and only 20% directly working with families. The FamilyStory project aims to develop an open platform that allows social workers to spend more time collaborating with families and gives families more ownership over their case. The goals are to improve outcomes for families, enable better decision making, and reduce costs by allowing social workers to spend quality time on cases. An alpha experience is being built to demonstrate the concept.

This document discusses how data and technology can be better utilized to transform public services and deliver better outcomes for less cost. While technological developments have created opportunities, uncertainty around privacy and data protection has limited how data is used. The example of Indiana using data analytics to help children and get people into work is provided as a success story. Key factors that made it work included having a compelling vision, leadership, treating problems horizontally across agencies rather than vertically within, and collaboration. The document raises questions around how places can be more ambitious in their use of data and technology, what support is needed to build capability, and how to better join policy and digital efforts locally and nationally.

Talk given at UXNZ 2016, exploring key "edges" of practice we are exploring in co-design in Aotearoa. With thanks to all the community members and practitioner who shared their experiences in this talk.
Talk Abstract:
Across Aotearoa (New Zealand), co-design is rapidly being adopted in public and community contexts to tackle complex national issues and policies such as youth employment; smoking cessation; community health and wellbeing; homelessness
and family violence.
Many of these are large-scale, complex social change innovations and experiments that bring together new groups of people, which means working together in new ways. The opportunity to scale co-design to help address systemic national social challenges is both awesome and terrifying. This talk highlights some of the key trends, changes, opportunities and challenges emerging in co-design for social innovation and social outcomes in Aotearoa.

This document discusses approaches to community engagement and collaboration. It argues that true transformation requires "change out there" through citizen skills and networks, as well as new forms of agency-community collaboration. Effective engagement is an open conversation that invites participation, allows momentum to build, and makes connections rather than relying solely on consultations. The document outlines engagement approaches like asset mapping and ideas farms that generate ideas and connections. However, it cautions that engagement only works if organizations are willing to act on community input outside typical processes and priorities. It promotes developing a "collaborative sphere" where informal relationships and discussion can lead to grassroots action.

Cork County Council delivers over 500 public services to a population of c. 416,000 citizens. The diverse and evolving needs of our citizens pose challenges for us as an organisation and to individual staff on the frontline of service delivery. In our experience, embarking on a process of organisational introspection alone is not enough. Reaching out to our customers and truly understanding their needs was the catalyst for holistic reform in how we design and deliver our services.
This talk charts the establishment and empowerment of a dedicated Service Design Centre in Cork County Council. It demonstrates how this, in turn, has led to an environment where innovation thrives and customer-focused, design-thinking is not only becoming the cultural norm; but is delivering meaningful and measurable results for our citizens.

Overview and slides demonstrating our work helping small charities make choices and build Customer Relationship Management (CRM) systems
On 27 November 2023 Datawise London launched the Small Charity Data Journeys research report, holding a series of workshops to delve deeper into findings and explore ways of working.
This document discusses challenges that charities face in managing customer relationship management (CRM) systems and data. It notes that charities often have data stored in many different places like spreadsheets and various digital tools. This can make processes time-consuming and lack integrity. The document considers whether charities should stick with their current systems or switch to new ones. It then outlines several initiatives to help charities, such as mentoring programs, user groups, and consolidating resources. A workshop brainstormed further ideas like creating a questionnaire for CRM providers and demonstration workshops of different systems. The overall goal is to help charities navigate options and have the right data systems to better serve people and demonstrate their impact.

Storytelling with Data (Global Engagement Summit at Northwestern University 2...Sara Hooker
The document provides guidance on effective storytelling with data in 3 key areas: answering important questions early, focusing on good data collection, and understanding your audience. It emphasizes answering why the audience should care, why you are best positioned to address the problem, and what the desired outcome is. Good data collection requires defining core metrics and sustainability. Understanding your audience involves considering their relationship to you and how to communicate to them. The document encourages borrowing from other effective examples and focusing on telling a compelling story with data rather than just presenting charts.
This is not your everyday data talk.
Through working deep inside the fastest growing SaaS startups in our space, we’ve studied the patterns, methods, and models for driving outsized results. The one common thread? How they use their data.
(How else would you grow from one marketer through to a $60M+ Series B just 12 months later?)
How do they make their data accessible, draw the right insights, set effective goals, prioritise and optimise processes, and automate ALL the (right) things.
So brace yourselves: we’re going to be navigating through AI, automation, “moving the needle”, and a minefield of other buzzwords to try to make sense of using your data for growth. But you’ll leave this talk with a simple framework and set of questions you can take and use right away.

1) Understanding the full story and theory of change behind social initiatives, not just counting outputs.
2) Engaging stakeholders in identifying objectives and indicators to measure performance and impacts on people, the economy and environment.
3) Using measurement as an ongoing process of learning, improvement and accountability rather than just reporting, through tools like social accounting, balanced scorecards and impact mapping.

Design and Data Processes Unified - 3rd Corner ViewJulian Jordan
In this presentation (given in early 2020) I explain that to build digital products, data analysts/scientists and designers need to leverage each other’s processes and work as a unit.
I introduce the problem solving approach of data analysts/scientists and designers as well as how to combine these approaches. Additionally, I explain how mental models and algorithms, while associated with design and data science, respectively, are similar ways to represent phenomena and questions about them.

m249-saw PMI To familiarize the soldier with the M249 Squad Automatic Weapon ...LinghuaKong2
M249 Saw marksman PMIThe Squad Automatic Weapon (SAW), or 5.56mm M249 is an individually portable, gas operated, magazine or disintegrating metallic link-belt fed, light machine gun with fixed headspace and quick change barrel feature. The M249 engages point targets out to 800 meters, firing the improved NATO standard 5.56mm cartridge. The SAW forms the basis of firepower for the fire team. The gunner has the option of using 30-round M16 magazines or linked ammunition from pre-loaded 200-round plastic magazines. The gunner's basic load is 600 rounds of linked ammunition. The SAW was developed through an initially Army-led research and development effort and eventually a Joint NDO program in the late 1970s/early 1980s to restore sustained and accurate automatic weapons fire to the fire team and squad. When actually fielded in the mid-1980s, the SAW was issued as a one-for-one replacement for the designated "automatic rifle" (M16A1) in the Fire Team. In this regard, the SAW filled the void created by the retirement of the Browning Automatic Rifle (BAR) during the 1950s because interim automatic weapons (e.g. M-14E2/M16A1) had failed as viable "base of fire" weapons.
Early in the SAW's fielding, the Army identified the need for a Product Improvement Program (PIP) to enhance the weapon. This effort resulted in a "PIP kit" which modifies the barrel, handguard, stock, pistol grip, buffer, and sights.
The M249 machine gun is an ideal complementary weapon system for the infantry squad platoon. It is light enough to be carried and operated by one man, and can be fired from the hip in an assault, even when loaded with a 200-round ammunition box. The barrel change facility ensures that it can continue to fire for long periods. The US Army has conducted strenuous trials on the M249 MG, showing that this weapon has a reliability factor that is well above that of most other small arms weapon systems. Today, the US Army and Marine Corps utilize the license-produced M249 SAW.
This presentation, "The Morale Killers: 9 Ways Managers Unintentionally Demotivate Employees (and How to Fix It)," is a deep dive into the critical factors that can negatively impact employee morale and engagement. Based on extensive research and real-world experiences, this presentation reveals the nine most common mistakes managers make, often without even realizing it.
The presentation begins by highlighting the alarming statistic that 70% of employees report feeling disengaged at work, underscoring the urgency of addressing this issue. It then delves into each of the nine "morale killers," providing clear explanations and illustrative examples.
1. Ignoring Achievements: The presentation emphasizes the importance of recognizing and rewarding employees' efforts, tailored to their individual preferences.
2. Bad Hiring/Promotions & Broken Promises: It reveals the detrimental effects of poor hiring and promotion decisions, along with the erosion of trust that results from broken promises.
3. Treating Everyone Equally & Tolerating Poor Performance: This section stresses the need for fair treatment while acknowledging that employees have different needs. It also emphasizes the importance of addressing poor performance promptly.
4. Stifling Growth & Lack of Interest: The presentation highlights the importance of providing opportunities for learning and growth, as well as showing genuine care for employees' well-being.
5. Unclear Communication & Micromanaging: It exposes the frustration and resentment caused by vague expectations and excessive control, advocating for clear communication and employee empowerment.
The presentation then shifts its focus to the power of recognition and empowerment, highlighting how a culture of appreciation can fuel engagement and motivation. It provides actionable takeaways for managers, emphasizing the need to stop demotivating behaviors and start actively fostering a positive workplace culture.
The presentation concludes with a strong call to action, encouraging viewers to explore the accompanying blog post, "9 Proven Ways to Crush Employee Morale (and How to Avoid Them)," for a more in-depth analysis and practical solutions.
Designing and Sustaining Large-Scale Value-Centered Agile Ecosystems (powered...Alexey Krivitsky
Is Agile dead? It depends on what you mean by 'Agile'. If you mean that the organizations are not getting the promised benefits because they were focusing too much on the team-level agile "ways of working" instead of systemic global improvements -- then we are in agreement. It is a misunderstanding of Agility that led us down a dead-end. At Org Topologies, we see bright sparks -- the signs of the 'second wave of Agile' as we call it. The emphasis is shifting towards both in-team and inter-team collaboration. Away from false dichotomies. Both: team autonomy and shared broad product ownership are required to sustain true result-oriented organizational agility. Org Topologies is a package offering a visual language plus thinking tools required to communicate org development direction and can be used to help design and then sustain org change aiming at higher organizational archetypes.

From Concept to reality : Implementing Lean Managements DMAIC Methodology for...Rokibul Hasan
The Ready-Made Garments (RMG) industry in Bangladesh is a cornerstone of the economy, but increasing costs and stagnant productivity pose significant challenges to profitability. This study explores the implementation of Lean Management in the Sampling Section of RMG factories to enhance productivity. Drawing from a comprehensive literature review, theoretical framework, and action research methodology, the study identifies key areas for improvement and proposes solutions.
Through the DMAIC approach (Define, Measure, Analyze, Improve, Control), the research identifies low productivity as the primary problem in the Sampling Section, with a PPH (Productivity per head) of only 4.0. Using Lean Management techniques such as 5S, Standardized work, PDCA/Kaizen, KANBAN, and Quick Changeover, the study addresses issues such as pre and post Quick Changeover (QCO) time, improper line balancing, and sudden plan changes.
The research employs regression analysis to test hypotheses, revealing a significant correlation between reducing QCO time and increasing productivity. With a regression equation of Y = -0.000501X + 6.72 and an R-squared value of 0.98, the study demonstrates a strong relationship between the independent variables (QCO downtime and improper line balancing downtime) and the dependent variable (productivity per head).
The findings suggest that by implementing Lean Management practices and addressing key productivity inhibitors, RMG factories can achieve substantial improvements in efficiency and profitability. The study provides valuable insights for practitioners, policymakers, and researchers seeking to enhance productivity in the RMG industry and similar manufacturing sectors.
