Online Identity Construction
What is online identity?
Online Identity is the sum of:
‘subjectivity’ (how we think of ourselves)
and ‘representation’ (how we present ourselves to others).
It can refer to our personality as an individual,
or our social identity as a member of a group.

Why online identity needs to be constructed?
• People come to online communities seeking
for information, encouragement, conversation
and goods available in different settings.
• To fit in specific setting and gain what users
aim for, they have to have coherent identity
with the circumstances - topic, style and
structure, author characteristics and group
characteristics. All these shape the way an
individual’s interaction with a community.
Identity strategies constructed on nonymous
online setting like ‘Facebook’, and ‘Line’
Facebook users apply strategies ranging among these three:
(Zhao et al., 2008, p.1824)
Successful online users:
Communicate coherently with structure of
communication within community.
Key elements of successful online communities
1. The community’s willingness to respond
to a member’s message.
2. Member’s commitment to the
communities, which is the result of with
receiving response satisfaction.
