Slavery has existed since 8000 BC and was practiced in many ancient civilizations and empires. While slavery declined in Western Europe by the late Middle Ages, it persisted in Eastern Europe into the 15th-17th centuries and in Russia until 1723. An estimated 1 million Europeans were captured and sold as slaves in North Africa between the 16th-19th centuries. Though slavery was abolished in many countries by the late 19th century, it still exists today in parts of Africa, Asia, and South America. The abolitionist movement began as early as the late 17th century and led to the end of slavery in the British Empire in the 1800s and its abolition in the United States via the Emancipation Pro
