Slavery has existed since 8000 BC and was practiced in many ancient civilizations and empires. While slavery declined in Western Europe by the late Middle Ages, it persisted in Eastern Europe into the 15th-17th centuries and in Russia until 1723. An estimated 1 million Europeans were captured and sold as slaves in North Africa between the 16th-19th centuries. Though slavery was abolished in many countries by the late 19th century, it still exists today in parts of Africa, Asia, and South America. 2. Slavery was an ugly part of American history. Slavery has existed since 8000BC in Lower Egypt. Slavery was known in civilizations as AncientEgypt, Ancient China, AncientGreece, Ancient India, AncientEgypt and RomanEmpire.
