4. INTRODUCTION
• Satellite is an option for carrying Internet and other IP traffic to
many locations across the globe
• Satellites have long response time, asymmetric bandwidth, i.e.,
difference in download and upload speeds, high bit error rate
and it’s back channel width is much smaller than forward
channel
• The bit error rate is an indication of how often a packet or other
data unit is retransmitted because of an error
• A high BER may indicate that a slower data is being transmitted
5. INTRODUCTION
• Adding Sky X system to the satellite network, allows
users to take full advantages of the available
bandwidth
• The Sky X technology has replaced TCP over satellite
• The Sky X increases web performance by 3 times or
more and file transfer speeds by 10 to 100 times
• The Sky X technology enhances the performance of
all users on a satellite network
6. The Sky X Family
The Sky X family consists of
• Sky X Gateway
• Sky X Client/Server
• Sky X OEM products
7. Why Sky X Technology?
• Satellites are ideal for providing Internet and private network
access over long distances and to remote locations
• The internet protocols are not optimized for satellite conditions
and consequently the throughput over the satellite networks is
restricted to only a fraction of available bandwidth
8. Performance of TCP over Satellite
• Communication over geosynchronous satellites, orbiting at an
altitude of 22,300 miles has round trip times of approximately
540 m/s
• The journey through the atmosphere can introduce bit errors
into the data stream
• These factors combined with back-channel bandwidth are
typically much smaller than that available on the forward
channel. This reduces the effectiveness of TCP which is
optimized for short hops over low-loss cables or fibre
9. Performance of TCP over Satellite
• TCP is designed for efficiency and high performance,
and optimized for maximum throughput and the
highest transaction speeds in local networks
• TCP is one of the main protocols in IP network
• TCP enables two hosts to establish a connection and
exchange streams of data
10. Sky X Gateway
• Specially designed for high-speed, reliable and
interconnected networks like satellite
• The Sky X gateway on the opposite side of the
satellite link transfers data back to TCP for
communication with the server.
• No changes are required to the client or server
and all applications continue to function without
modification.
11. Xpress Transport Protocol
• XTP (Xpress Transport Protocol) is a transport layer
protocol designed to operate over high speed network
and provides high level performance to the End-Users
12. Sky X Client/Server
• Similar to Sky X Gateway
• The only difference is that Sky X Client software
needs to be installed separately on each client
• Connections from client are obstructed and sent
over satellite using XTP
13. Sky X Client/Server
• Sky X server establishes a TCP connection
with destination server
• Enhances performance of Internet and
private networks over satellite link
15. Advantages of Sky X
• Makes satellite communication come alive
• Web performance go up by 3 times or more
• File transfer speeds go up by 10 to 100 times
• Maximizes the items passing through a process such that it
exceeds bandwidth
• Example: For a bandwidth of 10 Mbps for a satellite network Sky
X provides throughput of 5.8 Mbps for uncompressed data and
15.1 Mbps for compressed data
16. Application
• Used for Satellite communication
• Used to access web at a faster speed
• Used for efficient data transfer and file
transfer
17. Merits
• Increase Web performance by 3 times
• Does not require any modification to end
client or server
• Sky X Gateway provides fast, efficient, fully
reliable file transfers across computers
18. Future Prospects
• A product called Xip-Link which is under
development will replace the Sky X in the
near future
• It is very much similar to the Sky X with some
extra capabilities
• Aims for even greater level of performance
19. Conclusion
• Sky X technology is best suited for Satellite
communication using XTP and Sky x Gateway
• Sky X system of satellite network allows user
to take full advantage of available bandwidth
• It gives all features required for successful
data transmission
