2. WHY IT IS IMPORTANT TO PROTECT YOUR SKIN
FROM SUN EXPOSURE.
Four functions:
Protection
Thermal regulation
Sensation
Endocrine function
3. WHAT IS SKIN CANCER?
Is the most common form of cancer in the U.S
Non-melanoma
Basal cell
Squamous cell carcinomas
Melanoma
4. BASAL CELL CARCINOMA
Appears as a slightly transparent bump on the skin.
Occurs on most areas of the skin that are exposed
to the sun: head/neck
Caused by long-term exposure to ultraviolet (UV)
radiation from sunlight
Causes:
It occurs when one of the basal cell develops a mutation
in its DNA
5. CHARACTERISTICS OF BASAL CELL
CARCINOMA
A pearly white, skin-colored or pink bump
A brown, black or blue lesion
A flat, scaly, reddish patch
A white, waxy, scar-like lesion

8. SQUAMOUS CELL CARCINOMA
Is an uncontrolled growth of abnormal cells arising
in the squamous cells.
Mainly caused by cumulative ultraviolet (UV)
exposure over the course of a lifetime.
Can occur on all areas of the body but most
common areas are the rim of the ear, lower lip,
face, balding scalp, neck, hands, arms and legs.
More common for people over 50 years old
9. SQUAMOUS CELL CARCINOMA
CHARACTERISTICS
Scaly red patches, open sores, elevated growth
with a central depression, or warts
Often the areas of the body that are effected reveal
telltale signs of sun damage such as wrinkles,
pigment changes, freckles, “age spots”, loss of
elasticity, and broken vessels

12. MELANOMA
Most dangerous form of skin cancer
Caused mainly by intense, occasional UV exposure
(frequently leading to sunburn)
If treated early it is curable but if it is not it can
spread to other parts of the body where it can
become hard to treat.
13. MELANOMA CHARACTERISTICS
Black or brown, skin-colored, pink, red, purple,
blue, or white.
Knowing the ABCDEs of Melanoma
Asymmetry- drawing a line through the middle the mole
should be the same on both sides but if not it maybe a
warning sign
Border- tend to be uneven around the edges
Color- mole has a variety of colors (brown, black, tan,
red, white, or blue)
Diameter- usually larger in diameter than the eraser on
a pencil tip
Evolve- a mole changes or evolve over time
