This document provides information about a 4-day course on introduction to skin and biochemistry for cosmetic science taking place from May 20-23, 2016 in Los Angeles, California. The course is designed to provide an overview of the skin and its basic biochemistry for cosmetic chemists, product developers, and others in the cosmetic industry. Topics that will be covered include the structure and functions of the skin, cell types, inflammation, aging, wound healing, proteins, peptides, and the effects of ingredients on the skin. The instructors are experts in cosmetic science and skin biochemistry.
In recent years scientists are more frequently looking for ingredients that influence the skin’s condition and slow down the aging process. Peptides are involved in many natural processes with relevance to skincare and therefore have been used in skincare and pharmaceutical industry. In this article we will overview the cosmetics, makeups usefulness, etc. Makeup cosmetics are used to protect the skin and to provide safety and comfort, but their main purpose is as a beauty product to make the face and skin attractive. There are base makeup products and decorative makeup products the former are used to hide imperfections such as stains and wrinkles, to adjust skin tone, and to add firmness or translucence to make the skin look beautiful. The word ‘cosmetics’ is taken from a Greek word “kosmeticos” which means to embellish. Sure, cosmetics make you look good, but just like all things too good to be true, the positive benefits of using such products can take a toll on your health. Since early days materials used for remodelling or improvement of presence comes under the category of cosmetics. People want to look beautiful and the concept of cosmetics is as old as mankind and development. The need to beautify one’s own body and look beautiful has been a desire in the human race since the tribal days. Various beauty products such as skincare products, hair products, fragrances, oral hygiene, and nail products, which may contain toxic chemicals that can be destructive to health are used especially by women. Since long time cosmetics have been known to enhance the arrival of the human body. In a society obsessed with beauty, people are lured to fake their appearance as a cure for their insecurities the average woman uses 12 personal care products a day containing 168 different chemicals. A recent study has revealed that the skin may absorb up to 60 per cent of the chemicals in products it comes in contact with. But these products, which are imaginary to make us feel healthy and look beautiful, have a deep dark side. In our research analysis it is clearly depicting that most of the respondents are accepting that the advertisements, which are shown to us are purely the signs of marketing gimmicks. Various toxic ingredients and hazardous chemicals used in cosmetics are incorporated in beyond adequate limits. Cosmetics have not only seeped into the fashion world but are also playing a prominent role in one’s day-to-day life. Thus, it becomes a necessity to make people aware of various harmful effects of cosmetics and chemicals used in cosmetics. But our main concern is on the Revamping or doing a makeover of beauty industry with respect to aesthetics. Cosmeceuticals have become the fastest-growing segment of the personal care industry. About 25 years ago Dr. Albert Kligman of the University of Pennsylvania originally coined the term ‘cosmeceutical’, describing a hybrid category of products found on the spectrum between drugs and cosmetics that exert a pharmaceutical therapeutic benefit but not necessarily a biological therapeutic benefit.

Co-Sponsored by the Society of Cosmetic Chemists,
California Chapter & Beauty Industry West
Even though the legal definition of a cosmetic does not include structure or function
changes, scientists now know virtually all ingredients applied to the skin have the ability
to produce at least minimal alterations. It is therefore critical that cosmetic chemists,
product developers and other industry professionals have a working understanding of the
skin, its cells, structures, functions and basic biochemistry in order to create safe,
effective products for today’s competitive skin and personal care markets.
This course is designed to provide a current overview of the skin and its basic
biochemistry, including inflammation markers and pathways, aging processes, wound
healing, proteins, peptides, non-invasive measurements and testing methodologies, and
the effect certain ingredients have on the skin.
Who should attend: Cosmetic chemists, product developers, dermatologists, nurses
and others in the cosmetic arena.
To Enroll:
Online: Go to uclaextension.edu and enter REG# 263187 into “Quick Enroll.”
