3. SECTION 1
Parts of the Skeletal System
Bone:
Bones provide framework for the body. Bones protect vital organs from in-jury,
an example of this would be the rib cage. They also store important
minerals and produce blood.
Cartilage:
Cartilage allows more movement and it is not as rigid as bone. It is found
in joints between bones.
Ligaments and Tendons:
Ligaments and tendons are soft tissues that connect different parts of the
skeletal system to each other. Ligaments connect bone to bone, while ten-dons
connect muscle to bone.
Joints:
A joint is where two bones meet. They allow for movement.

Functions of the Skeletal System:
-support
-movement
-protection
-production of blood cells
-storage of minerals
-endocrine regulation

PARTS OF A BONE
There are 2 different types of bone, spongy
and compact:
-Compact bones are the densely packed
outer part of a bone
-Spongy bone is on the inside of the bone,
it is weaker and it is where marrow is found.
Bone Marrow:
-It is a flexible tissue within bones. Bone
marrow produces red blood cells in a process
known as hematopoiesis.

Different Types of
Joints:
Ball and Socket
Joints:
Allows freedom of
movement in all di-rections.
Example:
hip joint.
Hinge Joints:
One bone fits into
the concave of an-other
bone.
Example:elbow
Gliding Joints:
Surfaces slide over
one another, limited
movement. Example:
wrist

6. 5
Pivot Joints:
A ring of bone rotates around
another bone.
Example: the palm of the
hand
Compound
Joints:
This joint is made up of sev-eral
joints between different
bones. This allows for more
movement. Example: neck
