4. “In those days Peter stood up among
the believers (together the crowd numbered
about one hundred twenty persons) and said,
‘Friends, the scripture had to be fulfilled,
which the Holy Spirit through David
foretold concerning Judas, who became
a guide for those who arrested Jesus—
for he was numbered among us and
was allotted his share in this ministry.’ ”
Acts 1:15-17

5. So one of the men who have accompanied us during all the time
that the Lord Jesus went in and out among us, beginning from
the baptism of John until the day when he was taken up from us—
one of these must become a witness with us to his resurrection.”
So they proposed two, Joseph called Barsabbas, who was also known
as Justus, & Matthias. Then they prayed & said, “Lord, you know
everyone’s heart. Show us which one of these two you have chosen
to take the place in this ministry and apostleship from which Judas
turned aside to go to his own place.” And they cast lots for them,
& the lot fell on Matthias; & he was added to the eleven apostles.
Acts 1:21-26

7. “I have made your name known to those whom you gave me
from the world. They were yours, and you gave them to me,
and they have kept your word. Now they know that everything
you have given me is from you; for the words that you gave to me
I have given to them, and they have received them and know in
truth that I came from you; and they have believed that you sent
me. I am asking on their behalf; I am not asking on behalf of the
world, but on behalf of those whom you gave me, because they
are yours. All mine are yours, and yours are mine; and I have
been glorified in them.”
John 17:6-10

you have given me, so that they may be one, as we are one. While I
was with them, I protected them in your name that you have given

But now I am coming to you, and I speak these things in the world
so that they may have my joy made complete in themselves. I have
given them your word, and the world has hated them because they do
not belong to the world, just as I do not belong to the world.”

but I ask you to protect them from the evil one.
They do not belong to the world, just as I do not
belong to the world. Sanctify them in the truth;
your word is truth. As you have sent me into
the world, so I have sent them into the world.
And for their sakes I sanctify myself, so that
they also may be sanctified in truth.”

12. “Consider your own call, brothers and sisters:
not many of you were wise by human standards,
not many were powerful, not many were of
noble birth. But God chose what is foolish in
the world to shame the wise; God chose what is
weak in the world to shame the strong;
God chose what is low and despised in the world,
things that are not, to reduce to nothing things that are,
so that no one might boast in the presence of God.”

13. “As Jesus was walking along, he saw a man called Matthew sitting
at the tax booth; and he said to him, ‘Follow me.’ And he got up and
followed him. And as he sat at dinner in the house, many
tax collectors and sinners came and were sitting with him and
his disciples. When the Pharisees saw this, they said to his disciples,
‘Why does your teacher eat with tax collectors and sinners?’
But when he heard this, he said, ‘Those who are well have no
need of a physician, but those who are sick. Go and learn what
this means, ‘I desire mercy, not sacrifice.’ For I have come to
call not the righteous but sinners.”
Matthew 9:9-13

14. “When they had finished breakfast,
Jesus said to Simon Peter,
‘Simon son of John, do you love me
more than these?’ He said to him,
‘Yes, Lord; you know that I love you.’
Jesus said to him, ‘Feed my lambs.’
A second time he said to him,
‘Simon son of John, do you love me?’
He said to him, ‘Yes, Lord; you know
that I love you. Jesus said to him, ‘Tend my sheep.’”

Peter felt hurt because he said to him the third time, ‘Do you love
me?’ And he said to him, ‘Lord, you know everything; you know
that I love you.’ Jesus said to him, ‘Feed my sheep. Very truly,
I tell you, when you were younger, you used to fasten your own
belt and to go wherever you wished. But when you grow old,
you will stretch out your hands, and someone else will fasten
a belt around you and take you where you do not wish to go.”
(He said this to indicate the kind of death by which he would
glorify God.) After this he said to him, ‘Follow me.’”
John 21:17-19

19. May you believe in God.
But may you come to see
that God believes in you.
May you have faith in Jesus.
But may you come to see
that Jesus has faith that you can be like him:
A person of love and compassion and truth;
A person of forgiveness, and peace,
and grace, and joy, and hope;
And may you be covered in the dust of your rabbi, Jesus.
An Easter Season Blessing

20. Hear, O Israel:
the Lord our God, the Lord is one;
you shall love the Lord your God with all your heart,
and with all your soul, and with all your mind,
and with all your strength.’
And, ‘You shall love your neighbor as yourself.’
There is no other commandment
greater than these.
