2. THE SIMPLE PAST:REGULAR
VERBS
• Use the simple past to talk about an event that happened in
the past.
• Regular verbs in the simple past end in-ed. If the base form
ends in (e), add only (d). If the base form ends in (y) after a
consonant, change the (y) to (i) and add (ed). For regular verbs
that end in a vowel+y, add -ed.
• Use did not + the base form of the verb for a negative
statement in the simple past. We usually use didn´t for speaking
and informal writing.
• Time expressions come at the beginning or the end of a
sentence.

3. Exceptions
• The verbs DO and GO are irregular.
• The verbs SAY and BUY are irregular.
• The verb FLY is irregular.

• Subject + Did not + Base form of verb + Complement

USE EACH VERB ONCE.

9. ACTIVITY
• Read this conversation. Underline the three yes/no
questions in the simple past. Then circle the irregulars
verbs in the simple past.
A) Wow! I´m starved. Let´s go have lunch.
B) Why are you so hungry? Did you eat breakfast?
A) Not really. I got up at 8:15. I just drank a glass of orange juice.
That´s all I had time for. Did you eat anything this morning?
B) Sure. I always do. I had my usual big breakfast.
A) What did you have?
B) Scramble eggs, toast, cereal, juice and milk. Why did you get up
late? Did you stay up late last night?
A) Yes. I went to a movie and got home about 11:00. Then I
