Past Simple Tense. You going to see
its usages, rules and even exception
with theory, tables and examples.
3. We use Past Simple for:
Actions that started and were completed at a specific
time in the past.
Habits or repeated actions in the past.
Completed actions that happened one after the other
in the past.
Talking about a past state of being.
4. EXAMPLES
I sailed my car three days ago.
Mario always came to my
house when I lived in Paris.
Last summer I went to the
beach, swam in the ocean and
got house early.
He was proud of her victory.
5. FORMATION RULES
Formation of Past Simple of Regular Verbs
Rule Example
Most verbs take -ed Want – Wanted
Verbs ending in -e, take -d Like – Liked
Verbs ending in a consonant + -y take -ied Try – Tried
One-syllable verbs ending in a vowel + a consonant double the
consonant before the -ed
Stop – Stopped
Verbs with two or more syllables ending in a vowel + one
consonant, double the consonant before the -ed
Prefer – Preferred
Verbs ending in one vowel + -l double the -l before the -ed Travel – Travelled

8. QUESTIONS
Did + Subject + Base Form of the Verb
E.g. A: Did you do the homework yesterday? B:
No, I didn’t.
What/Who/Where/When/Which/Why + Did +
Subject + Base Form of the Verb
E.g. A: Why did you go to the hospital? B:
I went to hospital because I had stomachache.
