This document defines and provides examples of similes, metaphors, and extended metaphors. A simile directly compares two unlike things using "like" or "as", a metaphor replaces normal words to help others understand a message, and an extended metaphor repeatedly applies additional subjects and metaphors to a single main subject, often as the central theme of a poem.
