Show and Tell

Show and tell is a fun activity, which many of the children will remember doing last
year. Children are asked to bring an item that is special to them, preferably not a
flashy toy but rather something meaningful, which they can share with the class. In
the past, children have brought seashells, pictures or postcards from holidays, a
favorite stuffed animal or a book, etc. If possible, you can bring something relating
to the weekly theme or the season. Ask your child what he or she would like to bring.
Do not pressure your child. It is OK if your child is not interested in bringing
something on the assigned day. Children also benefit greatly from listening to their
classmates during show and tell. I would, however, like each child to try and bring
something at least once per month. If your child is insecure or not yet comfortable
speaking English, feel free to give me some notes about the item, and I can help
your child share information about his/her special item.

Benefits of show and tell:

Children, who are showing an item they brought from home, practice public speaking
and develop their active vocabulary. They also develop their self-esteem, as they
are in charge of the class for a few minutes while other children are listening.
Children in the audience benefit by learning to be patient and to listen to another
child. They also learn to ask questions about the item. This is an important skill, as
children tend to prefer asking questions to the teacher. During show and tell, the
children are learning to communicate effectively with each other. The teachers are
there for support and guidance when needed.

This year we will have show and tell on Tuesday and Thursday mornings/afternoons
depending on time allowances. Every child is scheduled to have show and tell
approximately every other week (working around holidays).

Below is the schedule for winter/spring 2013. Please keep the schedule in a safe
place and try to bring an item on the day assigned. If you forget/miss the day, please
wait until your next assigned date to bring an item. It is important to have show and
tell at a time when children are focused and can treat the presentation with respect.

Please bring the Show and Tell item to the teachers in the morning, so
that we are prepared.
