Should Women Be Allowed In Direct Combat
Throughout the history of mankind there has always been a debate regarding the equality between
men and women. A more specific detail in this argument is the conflict of women should be on the
front line of battlefield. This topic is significant congress is currently passing legislation on whether
women can serve on the front lines of combat. It is also significant because the army rangers has
opened its camp to women for the first time in early 2015. This essay will argue the point that
women should not be allowed on the front line of combat but allowed in the military. In order to
argue this point this essay will demonstrate how the role of women changed in combat over the past
100 years. It will also show what the differences are between ... Show more content on

Now that women have been participating in direct combat it is possible to look at the challenges
they encounter in direct combat and whether their presence benefits the United States military. On
the battlefield women tend to face higher rates of injury and evacuation as compared to men. A
study in 2010 by US army physicians found that women had more than three times the evacuation
rate than that of men. The physicians studied 4,122 soldiers and of the female soldiers that had to be
evacuated for non combat injury seventy four percent of them were issues related to pregnancy.
Adding women to combat groups can also disrupt group cohesion which is especially dangerous
when groups are in combat. Studies were taken regarding cohesion between men and women within
the military and these proved cohesion will not be disrupted within a group unless dating is present.
Although this might seem like a counter argument it is very difficult to find out whether two
members of a group are in a relationship and probably even harder to prevent it. Women are also
prone to more types of injuries such as pelvic stress fractures. One women out of every 367 had
pelvic stress fractures compared to one in every 40,000 men. Women are discharged for muscle or
skeletal conditions nearly twice as often as men. Since women have much higher rates of injury and
evacuation it is necessary to ask what are the benefits of having women on the front lines of
battlefield.

Argumentative Essay On Women In Combat
While interviewing ten people, both civilian and members of our armed forces of varied sexes, all
but one had a common concern with women in combat. They do not believe they should be
integrated if they are unable to meet the exact same standards as the men who hold those positions
currently. Staff Sergeant Pedro Campoverde (11B infantry), ex Drill Sergeant stated "women should
have different standards. They are built differently from us males." He has recalled many instances
where male soldiers were not able to complete certain tasks and would have to get assistance from
other soldiers. This makes him believe that helping a female soldier would be no different.
Although there are numerous jobs for women within our armed forces, they engage in activities that
are designed to suit the needs of men. A woman trying to achieve the same results as a man often
finds herself being injured and ending her career earlier than anticipated. People argue that not
allowing a woman to fight is taking away her rights. Considering a woman will always be in greater
danger than a man on the battlefield, her rights are being protected. There will not be an equal
opportunity for survival when the odds are stacked against ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net

The unpredictable nature of combat can cause major stress on the members of our military. This
makes it almost impossible to make quick and well educated decisions. While men might have a lot
on their mind, women will have hygiene and infections to add to her worries. The stress one deals
with has a major effect on health and how we interact with others. Team work is huge in war. This
could lower morale and cause military personnel to have a rise in uneducated, quick decision
making. One of the most important factors of staying alive in combat is how mentally tough you are.
This means controlling your emotions, and dealing with adverse

The Argument Against Women 's Combat
Debunking the Arguments Against Women in Combat There are many who would argue that
allowing women, who are physically unprepared, to fight in combat would affect the cohesiveness
and combat readiness of the units in which they serve. Government officials and military personnel
are a just a few of the leaders behind this opposing argument.
When asked about women in ground combat, President Bush summed up his position in four words,
"No women in combat" (Curl and Scarborough A01). He supported his statement further by
claiming that, "The policies currently in place that prevent women from fighting in combat have
served our nation well. There is no reason to change what is already working. Our military is
successful and will continue to be so" (ibid.). In saying this, however, he is providing an emotional
fallacy to the listener. He is appealing with Americans to keep with their traditions. Bush also,
unintentionally, gives a post hoc fallacy when he alludes to the fact that if women fought in combat,
our military wouldn't be as successful. Furthermore, he makes the assumption that if women were
allowed to fight in combat, they would negatively affect unit cohesion and male bonding, but he
gives no evidence to support his assumption.
Other opponents argue that women aren't really interested in fighting in combat, they're more
concerned with the benefits they would get as a result. Anna Simmons, a Professor of Defense
Analysis at a Naval Postgraduate School, stated this,

Informative Essay: Women In Combat
Women in combat
There are women in the armed services. Women do put their lives on the line to protect America,
this isn't some task that only men perform. Also, it's not just the armed forces that continue to keep
America free. I think that men and women should be treated equally. If women would like to
participate in the military they can volunteer. They could even be able to volunteer for front line
combat positions. However, women should not have to be a part of the draft. Men and women have
different bodies. Men endure pain better than women. Men do not explicitly feelings being hurt.
They often endure, not to scream, request processing "wound" immediately like women. Women in
combat hurt more easily and could not maintain the fight as long as men, simply because their
bodies are different. Men are supposed to be tall, strong and brave. Average ... Show more content

Many people say that if men and women are treated equally and for all of us of the benefits of living
in this country, then we must all be equally responsible for protecting land our country on the
battlefield. This is a twisted concept of equality and how we contribute to society. Like it or not,
these men and women are not equal, as the same. We are physically different, and we have different
roles to play. Men fight to protect their home is their duty as men, while maintaining the motherland
is the responsibility of women. It is natural order.
Our nation has been seduced by the lies of political correctness that men and women are the same,
but we're not the same. A sex is not better or more valuable than the other, but we are different, and
the difference that often turn into different roles. Women, on the whole, are weaker than men. They

Women in Combat
The debate of whether women should participate in military combat is a controversial issue
worldwide. While the majority of the western countries, such as America, believe in the
conservative values associated with women in combat forces, eastern countries, like Israel, do not
fully support these ideals. Some believe it is a woman's equal right, some believe it will cause
negative affects on the family's life, and others believe women in combat should receive the rights
they deserve. Every individual can and should have an opinion on the matter, but how they address
the issue can vary.
The concept of women in combat is an uncommon idea that can be traced all the way ... Show more

Depending on how history is interpreted, every person will have a different opinion on what they
believe to be correct.
America has countless means of support, including the Declaration of Independence and the Bill of
Rights, that declare equal rights on all citizens, or in other words, women in combat. There are two
sides of feminism relating to women in combat. One side describes the feminists who believe the
idea that "women can and should do anything men can do" (Ruby). So, if women can be anything
they want to be such as "heads of nations, captains of industry, astronauts, and surgeons," then they
should be allowed to fight in combat (Ruby). The alternate feminist approach based on gender
equality, which states women should be allowed to participate in military combat, is a fundamental
idea not only in this article, but also to feminists everywhere. The idea feminists believe is not that
women should do everything men do, but to "decide what activities we want humans to do, to be
involved in, to value––and then work toward equality in those areas" (Ruby). The idea is not that
women should go into military combat to be more masculine and violent, but to go in because they
have the right to defend their country, just like men can. Some say they are shocked to hear about or
see "women taking an aggressive role in combat, women coming home from Iraq with amputations
and other severe combat wounds, and women coming

Women in Combat: Uncle Sam Expands the Front Line
After a long endured history of only men on the front lines, the ban on women in combat has been
removed. However, talk has spread of opposition towards this controversial topic. Questions have
exploded on whether women will be beneficial or only a liability. Opposing viewers surrounding
this issue believe women are not capable of excelling in combat. Not only is there differences in
male and female anatomy, the overall workload is too excessive for women to endure. The popular
belief still holds, women belong in the home, not on the battlefield. Yet times are vastly changing.
Modern times has moved society towards fixing the wrongs it has created. From the Women's

In the 1992 Presidential Commission, it was stated that evidence "clearly shows the distinct
physiological differences between men and women" and that women are at a "disadvantage when
performing tasks requiring a high level of muscular strength and aerobic capacity." This argument is
both under and over–inclusive because many women have the physical strength to engage in combat
while many men do not possess though attributes. In all actuality, men are assigned to ground
combat positions before undertaking physical strength examinations. They base it off medical
evaluations, aptitude test scores and personal preferences. Thus, males are not removed from combat
positions for a lack of physical strength, but women are banned from entering such positions
regardless of physical strength. The jobs supplied should not be filled based on gender. Military
effectiveness requires that the best qualified person is chosen, whether or not they are a woman.
Therefore developing a gender–neutral policy and allowing women to take combat positions would
surely increase effectiveness and capability of the United States armed forces (McSally). Some of
the most courageous soldiers have been women and physical strength only added as a bonus for

Should Women Be Allowed In Combat Essay
Research Log
Question: Would allowing women in combat help or hurt military and its operations?
As a former female member of the military this question often came to the mind of myself and the
peers around me. This is an issue that stirs a lot of controversy on many news outlets, in
government, among military members and citizens of the United States. In the fight for women to
have equal rights, equal pay, etc., do women have the right to be allowed in combat? After reading
several articles, I noticed several issues are recurring in the argument against women in combat or
direct combat roles. Females sustain higher rate of injuries then men, females' physical capabilities
to move "wounded" soldiers to safety is significantly lower, and their accuracy and effective use of
weapons is lower versus their male counterparts. Multiple studies continually show lower
performance of women in training based exercises, often women incapable of finishing the tasks and
exercises presented. It can be noted that even though women are in the military now and accepted,
the physical standards set for training and requirements are not the same and below that of men in
the military. These things help enforce the argument that women ... Show more content on

counterparts physically, even using the same "standards" of physical training as a man to include

Should Women Be Allowed In Combat?
Women have been fighting for equality throughout history. They have fought for their right to vote
and they didn't get that right until the year 1920. They have also proven that they aren't just a
housewife that they can get a job and make their own money and don't need a man to take care of
them. Women have shown that they can do many things, but some people still don't see that.
Women, who make up some 14 percent of the armed forces, should finally be permitted to serve
fully in combat along with men. Opponents of putting women in combat question whether they have
the necessary strength and stamina. They also have said the inclusion of women in infantry and

Similarly, comitatus was a "Germanic friendship structure that compelled kings to rule in
consultation with their warriors, forming a warband." It's essentially the "bond existing between a
Germanic warrior and his Lord, ensuring that neither leaves the field of battle before the other."
Craig Gallatin, a retired Lt. Colonel in the Army and graduate of Ranger School had this to say, "My
concern with having both sexes in the same front line combat unit would be one of genetics.
Throughout history men, especially American men, have been conditioned and trained to protect
women. This will not be overcome easily and will result in men (and women) possibly losing their
lives in combat because coms soldier ignored his primary duty (even if only for a moment) to
"protect" the women fighting next to him. Shouldn't be, shouldn't happen, but it will. Sexual
liaisons, though repeatedly dismissed among proponents of women in combat as prosaic are also a
legitimate concern. It's just human nature. Gallatin observed, "Men and women are attracted to each
other emotionally and sexually. This will create disruption in the unit and, in combat, possibly cost
lives and/or mission accomplishment. It happens frequently in non–combat units where men and
women are assigned. Jealousy, etc. are very disruptive things. It is genetic will not be overcome by

Argumentative Essay On Women In Combat
In 2017, there was 214,098 women enlisted in the military (Women in the Military personnel).
Those who support women in combat believe that it may reduce the amount of sexual assaults and
that women in combat could improve and strengthen the military. Furthermore, advocates of Erin
Solaro strongly feel that none of the bad predictions about women in combat came true and are
doing perfectly fine. On the other hand, those who oppose women in combat are convinced that
female soldiers have a higher chance of being sexually assaulted and that men and women have
different physical standards. In addition, the critics of women in combat firmly believe that allowing
women in combat weaken the military, therefore harming the unit. Every reason was valid and
convincing, but I stand undecided on which side to support. Women in combat involve many
different varieties of combat positions and people who are in the military must follow laws that can

In addition, when Panetta lifted the ban, she may have affected the growing number of sexual

Should Women Be Allowed To Serve In Combat
Ever since the civil war women have been trying to gain rights to be able to join combat forces in
the United States military. But throughout those decades there has many debated on whether or not
women in combat is such a good idea. Some people think that the cost of having women in combat
will have a more negative impact overall than a positive impact. When it comes down to the
decision if women should or should not be the most important thing to consider is if this decision
would impact the United States power. A main reason that makes the United States one of the most

Even though many women were not allowed to serve in combat during that time, many women still

was very irregular because most women could only serve as nurses and other caretaking positions in
order to keep them out of danger". But Spivack says that "women disguised themselves as men in
order to serve in combat as couriers, sabotagers and even spies". This shows that women have been
going to the extremes since the late 1800's in order to be in combat. Even though women served
during the Civil War the debate for women in combat in the United States came around the 1940's.

America is called the land of equal opportunity and within the military; the fight for women having
the same job opportunities as men has been a non–stop debate for decades. Some say women should
be allowed to fight in combat with the infantry units and Special Forces units in a wartime
environment. A number of arguments have been traditionally given against women in combat that
range from women lacking the physical capacity needed in combat, psychological issues that may
arise within the unit and soldiers, and the matter of a female soldier getting pregnant in the
battlefield and how detrimental that can be. As many arguments there are against women in combat,

(Broadwell) In another article with the South Carolina Military News, Retired Air Force General
Lester L. Lyles who chaired the commission for diversity in the military stated: "If you look at
today's battlefield in Iraq and Afghanistan it's not like it was in the Cold War, when we had a defined
battlefield. Women serve and they lead military security, military police units, air defense units,
intelligence units – all of which have to be right there with combat veterans in order to do the job
appropriately." (Daniel) Women are capable fighting with men in "direct combat" units, they already
show competence by leading soldiers in quasi direct combat units. In today's war, deploying
overseas to a combat zone earns a soldier whether male or female the same opportunity to fight for
her or his country, but is also included in the same risk to being injured or being killed in action.
Cons – Women should serve in combat units Obvious reasons why America would not encourage
women to fight with the infantry are simply and generally because they are not naturally strong as
men and do not have the same physical capabilities as men. Female soldiers are, on average, shorter
and smaller than men, with 45–50% less support upper body strength and 25–30% less aerobic

The role of women in military combat positions has been a long–debated issue. And with more
countries like the U. S. allowing women to serve in combat positions; it has made the role of women
in the military, a very controversial issue. With many people feeling that women should not be
allowed to serve in military combat forces because they lack the physical abilities that men have.
But in reality, women have long played an important role in the military and have even had to face
enemy fire when they are on military planes and ships. In addition, the increased preparation and
training of military personnel has made it easier to see which women are prepared for combat roles.
All military combat positions should be open to women because they have shown regardless of
people's strong oppositions; they are willing to serve their country.
Many people argue that women would have a negative effect on men because they could affect the
unity or even cause a distraction during combat. They feel that led to many men not wanting women
to serve in combat with them. But in reality, many men support the integration of women in combat
forces. According to a poll conducted by an internet site, Pew Research Site, where they asked 1,005

men support the integration of women, that is virtually identical to the amount of women who

able to participate and fight in combat during times of war because gender does not limit someone's
opportunity to train for combat, a bigger army equates to a more powerful one, and trained females
are just as equipped as trained males.
Women should be allowed to train and fight for combat like any other man because gender should
not limit one's opportunity to participate. The women who want to train and fight for our country in
combat are very strong and determined to serve in the military. Andrew Tilghman, writer for
military times, confirmed "The Defense Department will lift gender–based restrictions on military
service, Defense Secretary Ash Carter announced" (All Combat). Already the Secretary of Defense
recognizes that gender does not play a role in one's capability to train and fight for combat. This

Many women who meet the male fitness requirements necessary for combat are strong enough to
perform in combat situations. Allowing women to participate in combat has a positive impact to the
military because they can build bigger armies that include both men and women that can fight in
combat situations when necessary. When allowing one to participate in combat training and combat
fighting, the military's judgment should be based on the abilities, strength, and determination of the
individual rather than the gender of the

Should Women Be Allowed In Combat?
As a woman, a leader, a student, a United States citizen, a feminist, and a Democrat, I am a firm
believer that women should be allowed in combat. Hillary Clinton and Gary Johnson also agree with
my point of view.
Clinton said, "I am a huge supporter of women being able to break whatever glass ceilings are
holding them back... Physically, mentally, you have to be prepared and you have to be ready. And I
think that, you're right, not every woman is going to want to do that [serve in combat roles] and
some women what want to do it are not going to qualify but we just had a few women pass Ranger
school, which is an enormously competitive, grueling experience." Some people believe women are

Should Women Be Allowed In Combat
Women in Combat
Countries across the globe have engaged in war since their very start; however, women have not
been allowed full rights in combat; they have often been excluded or sheltered. Women formerly had
little to no rights in war; however, over time they developed some rights ("History"). Since the
1940s, the combat exclusion policy has not allowed for women to take on front line combat or have
the opportunity to gain certain leadership or ranked positions (
Women's Actions). Many feel this excludes women from having a full opportunity in combat and
does not allow for proper career advancement (Service Women). Men look at women as weaker or
less than them when it comes to combat, but if they meet the physical requirements then they should
be allowed equal employment (Koren). Women should be allowed to engage in active combat to
ensure equality and give service opportunities; women have proven themselves to be physically,
mentally and morally capable of carrying out such duties ("Women").
The history of women in combat is somewhat controversial; and women have always seeked
equality in combat and military forces (Women's Actions). Women have been ... Show more content

Certain exclusion policies shown about the women make it unable for them to have certain career
advancements and takes away certain job and leadership positions. Women are excluded from 9% of
all army roles, or 30% of active duty positions. 38% of marine corps are closed for women as well.
For talented women to advance, be recruited or gain promotions in the forces they must lift certain
policies that enable that to occur (Service Women). Some rules and policies exclude women from
being generals or being able to be put into ranked positions, which can be seen as unfair. Women
should be allowed equal employment opportunities for all services (Women's

Argumentative Essay On Women In Combat
Women have always served in the military. In the American Revolution, they were nurses and
cooks, then in World War II they were pilots, drivers, and mechanics too. When women died in the
wars, leaders started wondering if women should only be in the military in times of crisis ("How
Roles Have Changed for Women in the Military."). Even though women have served for decades,
they have not been in combat for very long. In 2013, Leon Panetta lifted the ban on women in
combat positions. Then in 2015, it was decided that all combat positions would be open to women,
including special units like Navy SEALs (Silva). There are some who think women should not be
given this chance. The two sides of if women should be in combat are very different but both have
compelling arguments. The people in favor of women being in combat roles have many reasons but
there are three main points. If women are as physically capable of being in certain military positions,
they should get the same opportunities as men. If women were still kept away from combat, it could
limit the choices for the most qualified person for the job. Women and men can both be trained to
succeed in certain roles and if there are women who want to serve, why should they be turned away?
Their last point was that being in a combat position is often necessary to get a ... Show more content

One of the reasons are that it is proven that women are not as strong as men. www.livestrong.com
states, "According to the National Strength and Conditioning Association, women generally produce
about two–thirds the amount of total strength and applied force that men produce" (Williams). Also,
if women are serving, there is an increased risk of rape and sexual abuse. Even though men can
experience these things, enemies are more willing to torture female prisoners. One last reason is that
women and men serving together will hurt the group's morale and cohesion ("Women in Combat

Essay on Women in Combat
"In a perfect world, every U.S. soldier would be an asexual brute with a stunningly high IQ who
doesn't eat much, is adept at following orders and leery of challenging authority" (Thompson). As
far as humankind is concerned, there have never been any soldiers like that anywhere in the world,
let alone the United States military. Therefore, the standards for enlisting in military combat
positions are as high as possible to ensure that we can create soldiers that are effective as these
"perfect–world" soldiers. There are obviously men and women who are not able to meet these
standards, but there are definitely also men and women who are highly capable of meeting and/or
exceeding these standards. While some individuals feel that the ... Show more content on

The definition of "gender–neutral" has a different definition for everyone and it does not necessarily
mean energy exertion. These neutral standards are carefully put together to ensure that the soldier
will be successful in battle. Moreover, combat depends on the person, not the gender. If a five foot
tall, ninety–five pound man wants to enlist in a combat position, he is permitted to at least try. If he
is able to complete the tasks, he is allowed to fight. Then why should a six foot tall, one hundred–
eighty pound woman not be able to do the same? If the woman has the ability to carry the necessary
load and complete the necessary tasks, it is logical to allow her on the battlefront with the rest of the
competent men. The women who are looking for combat positions are not worried about their
feelings or what is politically correct. They want equal opportunities and if they qualify, they should
have the chance.
Furthermore, people have to realize there is not much need to be as hefty as a man to serve as a
combatant in modern warfare. For example, physical tests given to soldiers do not necessarily
evaluate an individual's potential in the artillery seeing that

Should Women Be Allowed To Fight In Combat?
Women should not be allowed to fight in combat. Primary, in combat woman physicality versus a
man's can make it difficult for woman to occupy commanding situations of services, such as
carrying weaponry required in combat. Arguably, woman have to carry the same weight of
weaponry as a man. As a result, this heavy armor carried by woman could affect a woman's true
ability to protect herself because of the heaviness of the armory used in combat. Secondly, woman
should not be allowed to fight in combat because of the risk of sexual assault if they were taken as a

Civil rights refer to a citizen's rights to political freedom, social freedom, and equality. When
thinking about civil rights the first thing that comes to mind is usually racial controversies; however,
the topic of civil rights is much broader than race. Since the beginning of time women have had to
fight for their rights. Whether it is suffrage or combat women do not have it easy. One hot topic of
today's debates is whether or not women should be allowed to enter face to face combat. America is
built on a firm foundation of equality, so it is only fair for women to be allowed into combat.
The equality of opportunity is when everyone is given the same opportunities of participation in life

Summary Of In The Combat Zone
Combat Zone In the essay, "In the Combat Zone," Leslie Marmon Silko writes for the purpose of
explaining the hardships that women go through in their everyday lives, that men do not necessarily
have to worry about. Through personal stories about her growing up with her father who taught her
how to use guns and hunt, to actual encounters with dangerous men who could've potentially
harmed her had she not been experienced, Silko provides real life examples of the dangers women
face in their everyday lives. Women are at risk whenever they leave the safety of their home, and
even may be at risk in their home as well. Being raised to depend on others for protection leaves
women vulnerable to attacks that leave them defenseless. This is different than men who are raised
in a way that gives them power and essentially puts them above women and eliminates this fear. We
see this theme on page 734 when Silko writes, "Men who have been in combat know the feeling of
being a predator's target, but it is difficult to men to admit admit that we women live our entire lives
in a combat zone." ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
With this metaphor, she portrays the fact that men don't have to worry about being attacked, or a
subject of assault everywhere they go. Women, like men in war, are in constant fear of an enemy
that can strike them at any time. They are trained from birth to be easy targets, as women for
generations have been trained by their moms who learned from their moms before them that they are
not killers, and are to rely on outside protection. This fact forces women to always have it in mind
that they are at risk of dangers. Though men in combat are trained to in fields of violence and
protection, they too must worry about the enemy at all times. Women and men in combat alike,

soldiers hassling them around about the fact. Women should be able to have the same rights as men

more willing to talk to a female that can relate to them more than a mean guy trying to get

many personnels, but women have been able to prove they are capable of serving in combat.
America is considered a free country, but how is it free if women aren't equal? The equality between
men and women in the military isn't equal due to the fact that women are not allowed into combat

and feminine qualities that they are needed in. the military will then have a wider pool for personnel

Arguments Against Women In Combat
Women in Combat A woman in combat was a trending topic for the armed forces for years. The year
2016 is when officially women have been granted the right to join the armed forces in a combat field
of the job. Others, particularly in the military, are against this act because of various reasons
concerning the safety of military troops in an anarchy form of living. A battlefield is known to be the
most stressful and dangerous environment, and it is vital for the armed forces to conduct safety and
simpleness to remove any complicated areas that might make the job more difficult. Efficiency,
communication, and most importantly trust and loyalty are essential to perform in such a violent
atmosphere.
With this in mind, soldiers are expected ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Although the two Ranger graduates completed ranger school it is shown that rarely a woman will
meet the standards of a male, but the majority will fall short. For example, The Marine Corps
Infantry Course has been open to women since 2012 and not a single woman has passed it yet. "It is
enough to think that the Marine Corps' Infantry Officer Course, open to female volunteers since
2012, has not had a single female graduate yet ("unoffended.wordpress")." The physical
requirements for being a soldier are set high because of the demanding jobs needed to be executed.
Often when women are put in charge of men in the military it is sometimes hard for a man to have
as much respect and motivation that they would have toward a man. You may ask yourself why this
is. It is because women in the military have a much less physical requirement in the military. A
leader must lead by example and if that leader does not meet at least the minimum requirements of
the other soldiers their reputation is taken as a joke. More importantly, in the field of a combat
mission, soldiers are required to carry at least 50–80lbs of gear with them at all times. You must be
in the finest shape of your life to get accustomed to this kind of strenuous work. This physical
requirement is not only for yourself to survive, but you must also be able to go beyond your limits to

Women Should Be Legal For Combat
Women should be allowed to serve in combat roles in the military Some argue that women should
not serve in combat because; they have never served in any type of combat operations in the history
of the American military. Positions in the military have been designed specifically for women and
how they perform their duties. No evidence can be produced that women have the abilities, physical
strength, or motivation to engage in combat operations, the physical differences from their male
counterparts are so extreme; women cannot maintain the agility or psychological confidence that
men are capable of displaying during extreme combat stress. However, this thinking misses the
point. History has shown as far back as the Revolutionary War, women such as Molly Pitcher, who
took up her husband's position as an artillery gunner, after he was injured in combat. More recently
during the wars in Iraq and Afghanistan have had many women put into stressful combat situations,
with very little training, and were able to engage the enemy effectively, and in some cases displayed
courageous actions that saved lives. They were able to physically and mentally handle the combat
stress equally with their male counterparts. Several women have also recently been allowed to
attend advanced combat training, such as the U.S. Army Ranger School. Additionally, with much
opposition to women serving in combat units, the Department of Defense has recently opened all

Ground Combat Exclusion Policy Analysis
The military has always been a reflection of the American people, as social trends change; the
military adapts to reflect these changes. However, change in the military is usually a slow moving
process. Many formal and informal actors play crucial roles in creating change in the military, and
the repeal of the Ground Combat Exclusion Policy of 1994 was no different. When examining the
events that led up to the repeal of the policy, it is clear that it follows John Kingdon's three streams,
problems, politics, and policy format. Due to there being such a clear issue with the current policy
within the public eye, it allowed both formal and informal actors to push Politian's and members of
the Department of Defense to act swiftly and repeal the ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Two of the largest influence groups who promoted for the repeal of 1994–ground combat exclusion
policy were the Service Women's Action Network (SWAN) and the American Civil Liberties Union
(ACLU). In short, SWAN's mission statement is to advance the interest of service women through
unification, support and impact. SWAN viewed the combat exclusion policy as a glass ceiling that
prevented women from obtaining positions that lead to higher–ranking positions. Additionally, in
one article published by SWAN they highlight the fact that the ground combat exclusion act does not
correlate with the modern battlefield. Thus, providing further justification for why the ground
combat exclusion policy should be removed. Another interest group that played a major role in the
removal of the ground combat exclusion policy was the ACLU. The ACLU works alongside other
feminist organizations to promote policy that would expand the roles for women in the military. One
major role the ACLU played in the removal of ground combat exclusion policy was when they sued
the then secretary of defense Leon Panetta in the case Hegar, et al. v. Panetta. The case argued that
the combat exclusion policy was discriminatory of women based off sex, which was already ruled as
unconstitutional in a previous court case. Not only did the lawsuit put pressure on government
officials to take action, but it also forced the issue into the national media. After releasing the news
that ACLU was bringing a lawsuit against the Secretary of Defense many news outlets jumped on
the story. The media widened the scope of conflict by bring the issue to the minds of people who
might not have been originally involved. The widening of the scope of conflict proves the political
theorist Schattschneider belief that getting policy to get pushed forward is like a fight. The side that

Throughout our history, there have been many struggles that women have faced based on their
gender. An issue that has recently risen is the idea of permitting women to take on combat roles in
the military. Various opinions flood the minds of many which makes individuals question whether
women should be authorized to take on such a task or not. Those who oppose women in combat do
not want women, with the exception of nurses, to be stationed in any areas where there is conflict.
They don't want women to be trained and expected to kill. The ethical issue is, should women be

This leads to the belief that there are differences between men and women, such as men have a
greater ability in combat than women becoming a factor of why women should not be allowed.
People claim that women, even if qualified, should not be used in combat because they are needed
for other social functions. Men may fear the loss of masculinity and can disturb male bonding. Men
who maintain traditional gender roles, may act foolishly in order to protect women in their units.
According to one article, "The percentage of women is the enlisted forces continued to rise until it

Arguments Against Women In Military Combat
Women in Military Combat
Women have served various roles in the military over the years. However, their participation in
combat role has always been debatable. History has highlighted a number of women who have
served in the military either intentionally or unintentionally particularly in combat roles. During the
Second World War, women from different countries such as Britain and Germany served in combat
roles (Megan, 32). However, this was short lived as many countries continue to bar women
participation through adoption of various policies. This is because different individuals hold varied
opinions and views on the issue. There are about 16 countries in the world which allow women to
participate in combat roles .This paper is going to discuss why women should be allowed to serve in
military combat.
Women should be allowed in the military combat because they can complete the same physical tasks
as men with proper training. This is because women have been able to successfully accomplish tasks
that have been perceived in the past as preserve for men. The argument that women lack physical

therefore puts them at greater risk of injury and target by the enemy (Simons 451). In addition, they
state that female are averagely shorter than their male counterparts and have less upper body

Should Women Be Allowed In Direct Combat

  • 1. Should Women Be Allowed In Direct Combat Throughout the history of mankind there has always been a debate regarding the equality between men and women. A more specific detail in this argument is the conflict of women should be on the front line of battlefield. This topic is significant congress is currently passing legislation on whether women can serve on the front lines of combat. It is also significant because the army rangers has opened its camp to women for the first time in early 2015. This essay will argue the point that women should not be allowed on the front line of combat but allowed in the military. In order to argue this point this essay will demonstrate how the role of women changed in combat over the past 100 years. It will also show what the differences are between ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... Now that women have been participating in direct combat it is possible to look at the challenges they encounter in direct combat and whether their presence benefits the United States military. On the battlefield women tend to face higher rates of injury and evacuation as compared to men. A study in 2010 by US army physicians found that women had more than three times the evacuation rate than that of men. The physicians studied 4,122 soldiers and of the female soldiers that had to be evacuated for non combat injury seventy four percent of them were issues related to pregnancy. Adding women to combat groups can also disrupt group cohesion which is especially dangerous when groups are in combat. Studies were taken regarding cohesion between men and women within the military and these proved cohesion will not be disrupted within a group unless dating is present. Although this might seem like a counter argument it is very difficult to find out whether two members of a group are in a relationship and probably even harder to prevent it. Women are also prone to more types of injuries such as pelvic stress fractures. One women out of every 367 had pelvic stress fractures compared to one in every 40,000 men. Women are discharged for muscle or skeletal conditions nearly twice as often as men. Since women have much higher rates of injury and evacuation it is necessary to ask what are the benefits of having women on the front lines of battlefield. ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

  • 5. Argumentative Essay On Women In Combat While interviewing ten people, both civilian and members of our armed forces of varied sexes, all but one had a common concern with women in combat. They do not believe they should be integrated if they are unable to meet the exact same standards as the men who hold those positions currently. Staff Sergeant Pedro Campoverde (11B infantry), ex Drill Sergeant stated "women should have different standards. They are built differently from us males." He has recalled many instances where male soldiers were not able to complete certain tasks and would have to get assistance from other soldiers. This makes him believe that helping a female soldier would be no different. Although there are numerous jobs for women within our armed forces, they engage in activities that are designed to suit the needs of men. A woman trying to achieve the same results as a man often finds herself being injured and ending her career earlier than anticipated. People argue that not allowing a woman to fight is taking away her rights. Considering a woman will always be in greater danger than a man on the battlefield, her rights are being protected. There will not be an equal opportunity for survival when the odds are stacked against ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... The unpredictable nature of combat can cause major stress on the members of our military. This makes it almost impossible to make quick and well educated decisions. While men might have a lot on their mind, women will have hygiene and infections to add to her worries. The stress one deals with has a major effect on health and how we interact with others. Team work is huge in war. This could lower morale and cause military personnel to have a rise in uneducated, quick decision making. • 7. The Argument Against Women 's Combat Debunking the Arguments Against Women in Combat There are many who would argue that allowing women, who are physically unprepared, to fight in combat would affect the cohesiveness and combat readiness of the units in which they serve. Government officials and military personnel are a just a few of the leaders behind this opposing argument. When asked about women in ground combat, President Bush summed up his position in four words, "No women in combat" (Curl and Scarborough A01). He supported his statement further by claiming that, "The policies currently in place that prevent women from fighting in combat have served our nation well. There is no reason to change what is already working. Our military is successful and will continue to be so" (ibid.). In saying this, however, he is providing an emotional fallacy to the listener. He is appealing with Americans to keep with their traditions. Bush also, unintentionally, gives a post hoc fallacy when he alludes to the fact that if women fought in combat, our military wouldn't be as successful. Furthermore, he makes the assumption that if women were allowed to fight in combat, they would negatively affect unit cohesion and male bonding, but he gives no evidence to support his assumption. Other opponents argue that women aren't really interested in fighting in combat, they're more concerned with the benefits they would get as a result. Anna Simmons, a Professor of Defense Analysis at a Naval Postgraduate School, stated this, ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

  • 9. Informative Essay: Women In Combat Women in combat There are women in the armed services. Women do put their lives on the line to protect America, this isn't some task that only men perform. Also, it's not just the armed forces that continue to keep America free. I think that men and women should be treated equally. If women would like to participate in the military they can volunteer. They could even be able to volunteer for front line combat positions. However, women should not have to be a part of the draft. Men and women have different bodies. Men endure pain better than women. Men do not explicitly feelings being hurt. They often endure, not to scream, request processing "wound" immediately like women. Women in combat hurt more easily and could not maintain the fight as long as men, simply because their bodies are different. Men are supposed to be tall, strong and brave. Average ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... Many people say that if men and women are treated equally and for all of us of the benefits of living in this country, then we must all be equally responsible for protecting land our country on the battlefield. This is a twisted concept of equality and how we contribute to society. Like it or not, these men and women are not equal, as the same. We are physically different, and we have different roles to play. Men fight to protect their home is their duty as men, while maintaining the motherland is the responsibility of women. It is natural order. Our nation has been seduced by the lies of political correctness that men and women are the same, but we're not the same. • 11. The Debate Of Women 's Military Combat Ilyssa Train Professor Loving UGS303 7 October 2014 Women in Combat The debate of whether women should participate in military combat is a controversial issue worldwide. While the majority of the western countries, such as America, believe in the conservative values associated with women in combat forces, eastern countries, like Israel, do not fully support these ideals. Some believe it is a woman's equal right, some believe it will cause negative affects on the family's life, and others believe women in combat should receive the rights they deserve. Every individual can and should have an opinion on the matter, but how they address the issue can vary. The concept of women in combat is an uncommon idea that can be traced all the way ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... Depending on how history is interpreted, every person will have a different opinion on what they believe to be correct. America has countless means of support, including the Declaration of Independence and the Bill of Rights, that declare equal rights on all citizens, or in other words, women in combat. There are two sides of feminism relating to women in combat. One side describes the feminists who believe the idea that "women can and should do anything men can do" (Ruby). So, if women can be anything they want to be such as "heads of nations, captains of industry, astronauts, and surgeons," then they should be allowed to fight in combat (Ruby). The alternate feminist approach based on gender equality, which states women should be allowed to participate in military combat, is a fundamental idea not only in this article, but also to feminists everywhere. The idea feminists believe is not that women should do everything men do, but to "decide what activities we want humans to do, to be involved in, to value––and then work toward equality in those areas" (Ruby). The idea is not that women should go into military combat to be more masculine and violent, but to go in because they have the right to defend their country, just like men can. Some say they are shocked to hear about or see "women taking an aggressive role in combat, women coming home from Iraq with amputations and other severe combat wounds, and women coming ... However, talk has spread of opposition towards this controversial topic. Questions have exploded on whether women will be beneficial or only a liability. Opposing viewers surrounding this issue believe women are not capable of excelling in combat. Not only is there differences in male and female anatomy, the overall workload is too excessive for women to endure. The popular belief still holds, women belong in the home, not on the battlefield. Yet times are vastly changing. Modern times has moved society towards fixing the wrongs it has created. From the Women's Rights Movement to today, ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... In the 1992 Presidential Commission, it was stated that evidence "clearly shows the distinct physiological differences between men and women" and that women are at a "disadvantage when performing tasks requiring a high level of muscular strength and aerobic capacity." This argument is both under and over–inclusive because many women have the physical strength to engage in combat while many men do not possess though attributes. In all actuality, men are assigned to ground combat positions before undertaking physical strength examinations. They base it off medical evaluations, aptitude test scores and personal preferences. Thus, males are not removed from combat positions for a lack of physical strength, but women are banned from entering such positions regardless of physical strength. The jobs supplied should not be filled based on gender. Military effectiveness requires that the best qualified person is chosen, whether or not they are a woman. Therefore developing a gender–neutral policy and allowing women to take combat positions would surely increase effectiveness and capability of the United States armed forces (McSally). • 17. Should Women Be Allowed In Combat Essay Research Log Question: Would allowing women in combat help or hurt military and its operations? As a former female member of the military this question often came to the mind of myself and the peers around me. This is an issue that stirs a lot of controversy on many news outlets, in government, among military members and citizens of the United States. In the fight for women to have equal rights, equal pay, etc., do women have the right to be allowed in combat? After reading several articles, I noticed several issues are recurring in the argument against women in combat or direct combat roles. Females sustain higher rate of injuries then men, females' physical capabilities to move "wounded" soldiers to safety is significantly lower, and their accuracy and effective use of weapons is lower versus their male counterparts. Multiple studies continually show lower performance of women in training based exercises, often women incapable of finishing the tasks and exercises presented. It can be noted that even though women are in the military now and accepted, the physical standards set for training and requirements are not the same and below that of men in the military. These things help enforce the argument that women ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... Despite my capabilities to excel at my job despite my injury, I was not "combat ready" per the military. • 19. Should Women Be Allowed In Combat? Women have been fighting for equality throughout history. They have fought for their right to vote and they didn't get that right until the year 1920. They have also proven that they aren't just a housewife that they can get a job and make their own money and don't need a man to take care of them. Women have shown that they can do many things, but some people still don't see that. Women, who make up some 14 percent of the armed forces, should finally be permitted to serve fully in combat along with men. Opponents of putting women in combat question whether they have the necessary strength and stamina. Similarly, comitatus was a "Germanic friendship structure that compelled kings to rule in consultation with their warriors, forming a warband." It's essentially the "bond existing between a Germanic warrior and his Lord, ensuring that neither leaves the field of battle before the other." Craig Gallatin, a retired Lt. Colonel in the Army and graduate of Ranger School had this to say, "My concern with having both sexes in the same front line combat unit would be one of genetics. Throughout history men, especially American men, have been conditioned and trained to protect women. This will not be overcome easily and will result in men (and women) possibly losing their lives in combat because coms soldier ignored his primary duty (even if only for a moment) to "protect" the women fighting next to him. Shouldn't be, shouldn't happen, but it will. Sexual liaisons, though repeatedly dismissed among proponents of women in combat as prosaic are also a legitimate concern. It's just human nature. Gallatin observed, "Men and women are attracted to each other emotionally and sexually. This will create disruption in the unit and, in combat, possibly cost lives and/or mission accomplishment. It happens frequently in non–combat units where men and women are assigned. Jealousy, etc. are very disruptive things. It is genetic will not be overcome by training." (Qtd. in ... • 21. Argumentative Essay On Women In Combat In 2017, there was 214,098 women enlisted in the military (Women in the Military personnel). Those who support women in combat believe that it may reduce the amount of sexual assaults and that women in combat could improve and strengthen the military. Furthermore, advocates of Erin Solaro strongly feel that none of the bad predictions about women in combat came true and are doing perfectly fine. On the other hand, those who oppose women in combat are convinced that female soldiers have a higher chance of being sexually assaulted and that men and women have different physical standards. In addition, the critics of women in combat firmly believe that allowing women in combat weaken the military, therefore harming the unit. Every reason was valid and convincing, but I stand undecided on which side to support. • 23. Should Women Be Allowed To Serve In Combat Ever since the civil war women have been trying to gain rights to be able to join combat forces in the United States military. But throughout those decades there has many debated on whether or not women in combat is such a good idea. Some people think that the cost of having women in combat will have a more negative impact overall than a positive impact. When it comes down to the decision if women should or should not be the most important thing to consider is if this decision would impact the United States power. A main reason that makes the United States one of the most powerful countries in history is our military, and having women in combat would most likely jeopardize the strength and efficiency of our combat forces. Going back in history ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... Even though many women were not allowed to serve in combat during that time, many women still furtively joined the front line. But Spivack says that "women disguised themselves as men in order to serve in combat as couriers, sabotagers and even spies". This shows that women have been going to the extremes since the late 1800's in order to be in combat. A number of arguments have been traditionally given against women in combat that range from women lacking the physical capacity needed in combat, psychological issues that may arise within the unit and soldiers, and the matter of a female soldier getting pregnant in the battlefield and how detrimental that can be. As many arguments there are against women in combat, there are many that agree they should be able to ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... (Broadwell) In another article with the South Carolina Military News, Retired Air Force General Lester L. Lyles who chaired the commission for diversity in the military stated: "If you look at today's battlefield in Iraq and Afghanistan it's not like it was in the Cold War, when we had a defined battlefield. Women serve and they lead military security, military police units, air defense units, intelligence units – all of which have to be right there with combat veterans in order to do the job appropriately." (Daniel) Women are capable fighting with men in "direct combat" units, they already show competence by leading soldiers in quasi direct combat units. In today's war, deploying overseas to a combat zone earns a soldier whether male or female the same opportunity to fight for her or his country, but is also included in the same risk to being injured or being killed in action. Cons – Women should serve in combat units Obvious reasons why America would not encourage women to fight with the infantry are simply and generally because they are not naturally strong as men and do not have the same physical capabilities as men. Female soldiers are, on average, shorter and smaller than men, with 45–50% less support upper body strength and 25–30% less aerobic capacity, this is essential for endurance. Many females go in disguise to go into combat, such as Mulan. In my opinion, letting women serve in battle is a victorious idea. Imagine girls being inspired by the females in combat. Many people believe females going in battle is unacceptable because they do not think females are capable of doing what men can do. Females may be stronger and powerful than how they appear to be. Women In Combat Roles I read your article Maintain the combat exclusion for Women in the military, published at the New York Times online, and I have to say that I disagree with your belief that women should continue to be excluded from combat roles in the military. Throughout your article you made a couple good points, however, the majority of what you had to say was based off of a ridiculous and outdated societal view regarding women in general, not just women in combat. Over the course of centuries the role of women in society has drastically changed and evolved, now more than ever, women are heads of households, companies, and organizations. Why then should a women's role in the military be any different? I implore you to reconsider your stance regarding women in combat based off of the following information. ... In addition to this, Defense Secretary Ashton Carter made the decision to open all combat related jobs in the military to any woman interested in and physically conditioned to pursue them (Donahue, 2015). This is ridiculous, as many women have achieved great military success throughout history. "Mary went to a nearby stream and repeatedly carried containers of water to the soldiers...she also carried wounded men to safety and took over firing her husband's gun when he became wounded" (Worth 16). • 35. Women In Combat Essay The role of women in military combat positions has been a long–debated issue. And with more countries like the U. S. allowing women to serve in combat positions; it has made the role of women in the military, a very controversial issue. With many people feeling that women should not be allowed to serve in military combat forces because they lack the physical abilities that men have. But in reality, women have long played an important role in the military and have even had to face enemy fire when they are on military planes and ships. In addition, the increased preparation and training of military personnel has made it easier to see which women are prepared for combat roles. All military combat positions should be open to women because they have shown regardless of people's strong oppositions; they are willing to serve their country. Many people argue that women would have a negative effect on men because they could affect the unity or even cause a distraction during combat. They feel that led to many men not wanting women to serve in combat with them. But in reality, many men support the integration of women in combat forces. According to a poll conducted by an internet site, Pew Research Site, where they asked 1,005 adults about whether women should be able to serve in combat roles in the military, over 65% of men support the integration of women, that is virtually identical to the amount of women who support integration at 66%. In my opinion, this is a well debated topic in the military world. I believe that women should not be allowed in combat because most are not physically capable, emotionally capable, and not experienced enough. I don't think women are nearly as strong as men. In my high school gym class, men met higher physical education standards than women. If I was in the military, I would not expect a woman to be able to carry my body out of gun fire. • 41. Women Should NOT Be Allowed In Combat The influence of females should not be underestimated; they have the ability to be just as strong and powerful as men do. Their presence in physical warfare would make an enormous difference in the outcome of the battle because they offer so many advantages that most people overlook. They have the potential to be even more robust than men due to their willpower. If women could be admitted into combat forces within the army, how could it possibly have a negative effect? Women should be able to participate and fight in combat during times of war because gender does not limit someone's opportunity to train for combat, a bigger army equates to a more powerful one, and trained females are just as equipped as trained males. Women should be allowed to train and fight for combat like any other man because gender should not limit one's opportunity to participate. The women who want to train and fight for our country in combat are very strong and determined to serve in the military. Should Women Be Allowed In Combat Women in Combat Countries across the globe have engaged in war since their very start; however, women have not been allowed full rights in combat; they have often been excluded or sheltered. Women formerly had little to no rights in war; however, over time they developed some rights ("History"). Since the 1940s, the combat exclusion policy has not allowed for women to take on front line combat or have the opportunity to gain certain leadership or ranked positions ( Women's Actions). Many feel this excludes women from having a full opportunity in combat and does not allow for proper career advancement (Service Women). Men look at women as weaker or less than them when it comes to combat, but if they meet the physical requirements then they should be allowed equal employment (Koren). Women should be allowed to engage in active combat to ensure equality and give service opportunities; women have proven themselves to be physically, mentally and morally capable of carrying out such duties ("Women"). The history of women in combat is somewhat controversial; and women have always seeked equality in combat and military forces (Women's Actions). Women have been ... • 47. Argumentative Essay On Women In Combat Women have always served in the military. In the American Revolution, they were nurses and cooks, then in World War II they were pilots, drivers, and mechanics too. When women died in the wars, leaders started wondering if women should only be in the military in times of crisis ("How Roles Have Changed for Women in the Military."). Even though women have served for decades, they have not been in combat for very long. In 2013, Leon Panetta lifted the ban on women in combat positions. Then in 2015, it was decided that all combat positions would be open to women, including special units like Navy SEALs (Silva). There are some who think women should not be given this chance. The two sides of if women should be in combat are very different but both have compelling arguments. The people in favor of women being in combat roles have many reasons but there are three main points. If women are as physically capable of being in certain military positions, they should get the same opportunities as men. If women were still kept away from combat, it could limit the choices for the most qualified person for the job. Women and men can both be trained to succeed in certain roles and if there are women who want to serve, why should they be turned away? Essay on Women in Combat "In a perfect world, every U.S. soldier would be an asexual brute with a stunningly high IQ who doesn't eat much, is adept at following orders and leery of challenging authority" (Thompson). As far as humankind is concerned, there have never been any soldiers like that anywhere in the world, let alone the United States military. Therefore, the standards for enlisting in military combat positions are as high as possible to ensure that we can create soldiers that are effective as these "perfect–world" soldiers. There are obviously men and women who are not able to meet these standards, but there are definitely also men and women who are highly capable of meeting and/or exceeding these standards. The definition of "gender–neutral" has a different definition for everyone and it does not necessarily mean energy exertion. These neutral standards are carefully put together to ensure that the soldier will be successful in battle. Moreover, combat depends on the person, not the gender. If a five foot tall, ninety–five pound man wants to enlist in a combat position, he is permitted to at least try. If he is able to complete the tasks, he is allowed to fight. Then why should a six foot tall, one hundred– eighty pound woman not be able to do the same? If the woman has the ability to carry the necessary load and complete the necessary tasks, it is logical to allow her on the battlefront with the rest of the competent men. The women who are looking for combat positions are not worried about their feelings or what is politically correct. They want equal opportunities and if they qualify, they should have the chance. Summary Of In The Combat Zone Combat Zone In the essay, "In the Combat Zone," Leslie Marmon Silko writes for the purpose of explaining the hardships that women go through in their everyday lives, that men do not necessarily have to worry about. Through personal stories about her growing up with her father who taught her how to use guns and hunt, to actual encounters with dangerous men who could've potentially harmed her had she not been experienced, Silko provides real life examples of the dangers women face in their everyday lives. Women are at risk whenever they leave the safety of their home, and even may be at risk in their home as well. Being raised to depend on others for protection leaves women vulnerable to attacks that leave them defenseless. This is different than men who are raised in a way that gives them power and essentially puts them above women and eliminates this fear. • 70. Women Should Be Legal For Combat Women should be allowed to serve in combat roles in the military Some argue that women should not serve in combat because; they have never served in any type of combat operations in the history of the American military. Positions in the military have been designed specifically for women and how they perform their duties. No evidence can be produced that women have the abilities, physical strength, or motivation to engage in combat operations, the physical differences from their male counterparts are so extreme; women cannot maintain the agility or psychological confidence that men are capable of displaying during extreme combat stress. However, this thinking misses the point. History has shown as far back as the Revolutionary War, women such as Molly Pitcher, who took up her husband's position as an artillery gunner, after he was injured in combat. More recently during the wars in Iraq and Afghanistan have had many women put into stressful combat situations, with very little training, and were able to engage the enemy effectively, and in some cases displayed courageous actions that saved lives. They were able to physically and mentally handle the combat stress equally with their male counterparts. Several women have also recently been allowed to attend advanced combat training, such as the U.S. Army Ranger School. Additionally, with much opposition to women serving in combat units, the Department of Defense has recently opened all combat related positions including ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

  • 72. Ground Combat Exclusion Policy Analysis The military has always been a reflection of the American people, as social trends change; the military adapts to reflect these changes. However, change in the military is usually a slow moving process. Many formal and informal actors play crucial roles in creating change in the military, and the repeal of the Ground Combat Exclusion Policy of 1994 was no different. When examining the events that led up to the repeal of the policy, it is clear that it follows John Kingdon's three streams, problems, politics, and policy format. Due to there being such a clear issue with the current policy within the public eye, it allowed both formal and informal actors to push Politian's and members of the Department of Defense to act swiftly and repeal the ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... Two of the largest influence groups who promoted for the repeal of 1994–ground combat exclusion policy were the Service Women's Action Network (SWAN) and the American Civil Liberties Union (ACLU). In short, SWAN's mission statement is to advance the interest of service women through unification, support and impact. SWAN viewed the combat exclusion policy as a glass ceiling that prevented women from obtaining positions that lead to higher–ranking positions. Additionally, in one article published by SWAN they highlight the fact that the ground combat exclusion act does not correlate with the modern battlefield. Thus, providing further justification for why the ground combat exclusion policy should be removed. Another interest group that played a major role in the removal of the ground combat exclusion policy was the ACLU. The ACLU works alongside other feminist organizations to promote policy that would expand the roles for women in the military. One major role the ACLU played in the removal of ground combat exclusion policy was when they sued the then secretary of defense Leon Panetta in the case Hegar, et al. v. Panetta. The case argued that the combat exclusion policy was discriminatory of women based off sex, which was already ruled as unconstitutional in a previous court case. Not only did the lawsuit put pressure on government officials to take action, but it also forced the issue into the national media. After releasing the news that ACLU was bringing a lawsuit against the Secretary of Defense many news outlets jumped on the story. The media widened the scope of conflict by bring the issue to the minds of people who might not have been originally involved. The widening of the scope of conflict proves the political theorist Schattschneider belief that getting policy to get pushed forward is like a fight. The side that has more ... • 74. Women In Combat Analysis Critical Response to the article: Women in Combat? These two may lead the way. (8/18/15) This editorial discusses the subject of women in combat. The army is primarily known for the men who fight for our country. There could however, be a turning point for women in the army coming in the near future. Two women graduated from the Army Ranger School this month, which is something a woman had never accomplished before. They had to complete this physically, mentally and emotionally challenging course, which is designed to be just like combat. Personally I idolize these two women who were able to complete this course. There were 19 women and 380 men who started the Ranger School course. Seeing how some of the men weren't even able to complete ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

  • 76. Women In Combat Throughout our history, there have been many struggles that women have faced based on their gender. An issue that has recently risen is the idea of permitting women to take on combat roles in the military. Various opinions flood the minds of many which makes individuals question whether women should be authorized to take on such a task or not. Those who oppose women in combat do not want women, with the exception of nurses, to be stationed in any areas where there is conflict. They don't want women to be trained and expected to kill. The ethical issue is, should women be allowed to engage in combat? There have been many restrictions that have prohibited women from taking on specific roles in the military in previous years. According to one ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... This leads to the belief that there are differences between men and women, such as men have a greater ability in combat than women becoming a factor of why women should not be allowed. People claim that women, even if qualified, should not be used in combat because they are needed for other social functions. Men may fear the loss of masculinity and can disturb male bonding. Men who maintain traditional gender roles, may act foolishly in order to protect women in their units. According to one article, "The percentage of women is the enlisted forces continued to rise until it reach 15 percent in 2002, and then, it unexpectedly stopped growing and dropped slightly" (Armor, "Women in Combat: Rationale and Implications"). There is a higher percentage of men who enlist, compared to that of women. Another issue is that there are often reported problems of sexual assault and harassment of women in the military. A sexual assault cannot only cause a woman to loss faith or respect of her peers, but she may fear them. Whether it is unwanted advances or sexual assault, it can destroy a unit's ... • 78. Arguments Against Women In Military Combat Women in Military Combat Women have served various roles in the military over the years. However, their participation in combat role has always been debatable. History has highlighted a number of women who have served in the military either intentionally or unintentionally particularly in combat roles. During the Second World War, women from different countries such as Britain and Germany served in combat roles (Megan, 32). However, this was short lived as many countries continue to bar women participation through adoption of various policies. This is because different individuals hold varied opinions and views on the issue. There are about 16 countries in the world which allow women to participate in combat roles .This paper is going to discuss why women should be allowed to serve in military combat. Women should be allowed in the military combat because they can complete the same physical tasks as men with proper training. This is because women have been able to successfully accomplish tasks that have been perceived in the past as preserve for men. The argument that women lack physical ability to ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... They argue that even though they can accomplish the same physical tasks like men, they are not naturally as strong as they lack the muscle strength that is required to serve in combat roles of the military. Muscle strength is necessary to carry the heavy weapons and in fighting the enemy. This therefore puts them at greater risk of injury and target by the enemy (Simons 451). In addition, they state that female are averagely shorter than their male counterparts and have less upper body strength that is essential for endurance in the military.
