This document describes 7 common shot types used in filmmaking: establishing shot, long shot, mid shot, close up, extreme close up, low angle, and high angle. The establishing shot establishes the scene by showing location and time period. Long shots show people arriving or leaving in relation to their surroundings. Mid shots are used for dialogue or reaction shots. Close ups focus on facial expressions or serious discussions. Extreme close ups emphasize emotions on faces. Low angles make subjects seem powerful while high angles have the opposite effect, making subjects seem weak or vulnerable.
