The short–term memory is the lead to our long lasting remembers. Short–term memory is the second
stage in the memory processing (Huffman). The short–term memory is the part of the memory that

The Long Term And Short Term Memory
According to philosopher–psychologist William James, memory is a generalized concept that
encompasses the long term and short term memory. Kendra Cherry, psychologist expert, defines
long term memory as "storage of information over an extended period." (Cherry n.d.) An
individual's long term memory is structured by a semi–permanent chemical and the anatomical
hippocampus. The hippocampus is in the center of both hemispheres of the brain and works in
accordance with the amygdala to allow information to be imported to form memories. In relation to
her research of the long term memory, Cherry also provided information on the characterization of
the short memory which is described as, the "primary or active memory" that presently takes in
information. (Cherry n.d.) The thalamus is a large portion of a dual lobed mass of matter that is
located under the cerebral cortex. An individual's brain goes through three stages of the retention of
information which are: encoding, storage, and retrieval. Our brain codes information in three
methods which is through visual, acoustic, and semantic simulation. Encoding means that certain
signals are sent to the brain. Storage means that the brain is maintaining information over time.
Information is received through the working memory that consist of auditory memory and spatial
memory. (Morrin, n.d) Spatial memory captures the visual aspects of the information being
presented to the subject.

In the results, it is shown that there is a higher percentage recall rate for those only looking at letters
and not letters and numbers; this is promising information as it supports the hypothesis. It is also
shown throughout the results that the maximum characters remembered was ten letters. It is

The effects of aerobic exercise on short–term memory
Blakemore (1988) defines memory as the ability to retain information from past experiences.
According to a study done by Brown–Peterson, the average person's short–term memory is 60%
accurate (Gross et al., 2015). According to a research experiment, conducted by Stroth et al. (2011),
a possible way of increasing memory is through aerobic exercise. Stroth et al. (2011), concluded that
aerobic exercise improves the visual memory by 25%. According to a study done Leavitt et al.
(2014), aerobic exercise can increase the volume of the hippocampus, which has been linked to
memory formation and short–term memory, by 16.5 %. Previous studies have revealed that there is a
causal relationship between aerobic exercise and memory; however, previous studies have not
looked into ways that improve short–term memory (Holt et al., 2015). This study tests the
hypothesis, that aerobic exercise has a positive correlation with short–term memory, and that 30
minutes of aerobic exercise can increase the accuracy of a person's short–term memory by 10–20 %.

Participants
Participant included in this study were 24 university students (50% females), recruited from
introductory psychology and health courses at Edith Cowan University. The age of the participants
ranged from 18 to 45 years (M= 30.95; SD= 8.60). The students volunteered when asked by the

After a memory is created it is important to know how our brain stores these memories (Mohs,
2007). In this paper, the importantance of comparing short term memory to long term memory will
be analyzed. Throughout life we have millions of memories, but the different steps of short and
long–term memory help us filter those memories (Mohs, 2007). As our brain sorts through the
memories to preserve, it begins the process of filtering them from short to long term. Short term
memory is held for short periods of time before being discarded or moved to long term memory.
Short term memory is also referred to as working memory. When additional information is added to
the basic thought or short–term memory it is then transferred into long term memory. Long term
memory is the final step in retaining information for longer periods of time (Rahtus, 2010).
Short term memory is gathered and used for brief amounts of time. As a result, it will decline rapidly
from our brain within a few moments. Items can be retained in short term memory when strategies
such as rehearsal are implemented (Ruthus, 2010). Daily routines including: school, work and, play
involve short term memory. Southtree states, that people have an average of 70,000 thoughts during
our wake and sleep cycles (Macco's, 2017). Our brain immediately begins to filter these thoughts to

The first one is the episodic memory which is related to personal experiences while the second one
is the semantic memory which is knowledge of words, concepts, symbols and objects. Surprisingly,
cognitive researchers believe that short– term memory is a reflection of long–term memory.
However, others argue that these two types of memory function differently. Thus, the link between
STM and LTM is still a controversial issue. Since memory has been of interest to psycholinguists
and researchers, many tend to decode the message passing between these two major components of
memory.
Is there a messaging protocol that may link both ? To what extent each one can affect the other?
This paper analyzes the studies that have been conducted to look at the underlying relationship
between STM and LTM through the demonstration of a body of research conducted in this field.
2. Retrieving from Short –Term Memory Information is stored in STM for a short period of time,
and it is retrieved from there. Of course, there are processes that occur during such. There is a task
introduced by Sternberg (2004) to determine the recall mechanism. In this task, a set of seven items
is presented one at a time, and the participants go over a memory test item which is called a probe.
The participants must decide whether this probe is on the set or not.

The past few days learning about memory basics and memory based on emotions has been very
interesting. The memory basics was a bit of a review, as I remember learning about, encoding,

I am more familiar with physical match context than I am with emotional match context. One of my
high school teachers discussed this idea with my class. She talked about the concept that if you
chewed a specific flavor of gum while you were studying and then chewed the same flavor of gum

results showed that participants scored similarly in both the familiar music and the unfamiliar music

condition signifies that short–term memory is equally impacted while listening to familiar music as
it is when listening unfamiliar music. These findings oppose my original prediction that participants
would recall more words in the familiar music condition than they would in the unfamiliar familiar
music condition by showing that there was no difference in the average amount of words recalled
between the music conditions. It is possible that these results did not reach statistical significance
because, while the participants were familiar with the melody and lyrics of the song used in the
familiar music condition, they were unfamiliar with the specific version of the song. However, the

was not taken into consideration was that in the sophomore class itself, there are students of various
ages. As seen in Appendix I, the ages of the participants ranged from 15 to 17 years old.
Theoretically, the participants who are older would have a more developed brain and may possibly
