Essay Abraham Lincoln
As the 16th president, Abraham Lincoln was known to be the greatest American President. He
guided his country through one of the most catastrophic experiences in its history, the Civil War.
He was a very unique president, being the first president to have a beard, being the tallest president
standing at 6 4 and also being the first to be assassinated. Abe Lincoln accomplished many things in
the 4 year term he had served before being assassinated. With his intelligence and hard work, he
made a difference in the United States. For example he released the Emancipation Proclamation
which was one of his greatest accomplishments. He passed the Homestead Act, Morrill Act, and
National Banking Act. If Abraham Lincolnhad not become... Show more content on Helpwriting.net

Abraham Lincoln had various jobs. He worked as a store keeper, and later was chosen to
become militia captain in the Black Hawk War and postmaster. Lincoln s political career began
in 1832. Even though he did not win a seat in the State Legislature, two years later he won a seat
as a Whig. He served four terms as a Whig and by doing so he started becoming popular
statewide. Lincoln later began to study law and in 1836 he was licensed to practice. Being
successful he moved to the new capital Springfield. November 2, 1842 he married Mary Todd who
came from a very wealthy family later had four sons by the name of Robert, Edward, William, and
Thomas. Out of the four only Robert had survived into adulthood. Forming a partnership with
William H. Herndon Lincoln became Illinois s brightest lawyers. In 1858 Lincoln ran against
Stephen A. Douglas for Senator. He lost the election, but in debating with Douglas he gained a
national reputation that won him the Republican nomination for President in 1860
(www.whitehouse.gov/).
As president of the United States, Abraham accomplished a lot in four years. One of his major
achievements that will always be remembered and still recognized today that had made a
difference in the United States was the Emancipation Proclamation. It was his hard work that had
kept the union together during the civil war. He did have to face many problems during the Civil
War such as him not being prepared for such battle because he had to be

Anthem Individuality Essay
Individuality in Anthem
Ceaseless collectivism is not something that can be forced upon a community. Ayn Rand s novel
Anthem conveys this through the writings of Equality 7 2125, a man willing to stand up to the
collectivism of the society he is confined to. Anthem not only shows how dull and lifeless a
society can be with a lack of individuality in its people, but also reveals how one person can
significantly impact a community. This novel displays the importance of individualism through
Equality s thoughts and actions. This includes when he reinvents electricity in the tunnel, falls in
love with Liberty, and when he completely separates himself from society. Equality s individualism
is prominent when he purposely isolates himself in ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
In addition, Equality continues to make his individualism known by preferring a woman,
Liberty 3 5000, above all. While sweeping the streets, Equality takes notice of a woman working
in the fields. He is instantly intrigued by her and thinks of her over all others. Equality s attitude
is significantly changed by his interactions with Liberty. We do not know why we think of them.
We do not know why, when we think of them, we feel of a sudden that earth is good and that it is
not a burden to live (Rand 41). Individualism is shown when Equality chooses to favor Liberty.
Equality looked at her, even though there were other women in the field that day. He chooses
Liberty above all the woman. Equallity shows a preference in only her, which shows individuality.
To add, Equality is becoming more unruly and disobiedient by continuing to break rules. The
crimes he comits involve talking to woman of other Trades, looking upon woman, and the
Transgression of Preference, which is to prefer someone or something above others. Equality s
love for Liberty continues to isolate and detach him from his brothers. His love for Liberty
motivates him to banish himself from his society and cut off all his ties to it. Equality s
individuality grows further when he purposely separates himself from his society and obliterates
the last of his identity that associates himself with the City. While showing his light to the Council
of Scholars, they tell

Genetic Interventions And The Ethics Of Enhancement Of...
When you look at society today, it is plausible to say half of the population is affected by cancer
or disease. Now based on the millions of people on this earth, this assumption is not one to be
proud of. Day by day and year by year medical advancements have been in affect and so far
helping decrease the number of deadly cases of disease. Recently researchers have made a major
breakthrough in the field of medicine. Technology has become so advanced that physicians are
able to detect disease present in genes inside a fetus before it is completely developed. Because
they are now able to identify the gene, it brings up a whole new topic of altering specific genes upon
our children to physically enhance them. In most cases, parents would choose to enhance these
genes to have athletic or musically talented child. Now whether you think this is ethical or not is up
to you however, I will be evaluating three articles on this topic and presenting the argument for each
one. Julian Savulescu wrote Genetic Interventions and the Ethics of Enhancement of HumanBeings
and in this article he clearly states his position on the issues as well as providing supporting and
opposing sides to the matter. He starts off by explaining this issue is focused on biological
enhancement and more specifically genetic enhancement. Then the thesis statement is provided, I
want to argue that, far from it s being merely permissible, we have a moral obligation or moral
reason to enhance ourselves and our

Discipline In The Veldt
Parents choose to discipline their children to help them grow as people. Positive punishment
goes a long way in developing character and instilling morals. In contrast, a lack of discipline
can cause children to rebel or put themselves in dangerous situations. This is apparent in Ray
Bradbury s The Veldt. Characters Wendy and Peter are shown little love and discipline by their
parents, which has severe consequences later in the story. Through allusion, irony, and setting
Bradbury shows that discipline is vital to the growth of children. Bradbury describes the purr of
the lions breathing in combination with their eyes to create a feeling of superiority or power.
This motif shows the extreme lack of power or control that George and Lydia have over their
children. After entering the room and admiring the mechanical genius of the technology, George
and Lydia noticed they were staring at two ferocious lions only 15 feet away. Bradbury notes the
sound of their matted lion lungs exhaling on the silent noontide (Bradbury 3). This not only
would create fear at such a close proximity, but it shows how strong the lions are. Bradbury then
mentions how the lions stood looking at George and Lydia Hadley with terrible yellow green eyes
(Bradbury 3). Again, this attribute shows the power the lions possess. When considering the
family, the children, much like the lions, have more power than the parents. The lack of power
George and Lydia have allows Wendy and Peter to feel superior

Protein Atherosclerosis
Proteins are very important to our lives because they carry out a multitude of tasks in our body.
Proteins are linear chains of amino acids that adopt unique three dimensional structures and are
packed into their particular native conformations. However, protein folding can also go wrong
when the inaccurate folding and clustering together of proteinmolecules, which are observed in
numerous human diseases such as: diabetes, atherosclerosis, cystic fibrosis, Creutzfeldt Jakob,

The misfolding proteins can lead to many different diseases for human bodies. So, it s important to
prevent or disrupt the pathways to a misfolded protein. To do so, we first need to understand the
function of protein folding, amyloid fibril as well as alpha helix, beta sheets, AОІ , and О±
Synuclein...how they affected the structures of each protein in certain diseases. Then, it would be a
good fundamental tool that may lead to the development for treating diseases. However, the
challenge in developing treatment to prevent the misfolding disorders is identifying the ideal stage
at which the protein misfolding and subsequent aggregation can be disrupted. For example,

I Have Learned Through Teaching
One of the many things that I have learned through teaching young people is that time goes by a
lot faster. In reflecting from my field teaching lessons, I realized that there were many things
that I was pleased with, but I also realized that there were many things I know I need to work on.
Watching a video of you teach a class is the absolute best way to self evaluate yourself. We are
most critical of ourselves when we can see our work played back to us. This experience has not
only been helpful in my teachingmethods, but it has helped me to establish a more professional and
authoritative essence in the classroom. Before students had even seen the writingassignment,

When I began the lesson plan on verbals I had students write freely about a significant incident in
their lives in which you were taught a meaningful lesson. Students had complete freedom to write
on a topic that had happened to them, or someone they knew. When students are given the
opportunity to write about their lives, that is when we empower students with their own words. The
students were able to choose what incident they wanted to write about from their lived experiences.
After my minilesson on verbals I wanted students to incorporate these into their own writing to add
action and precise details about their significant incident. During this lesson plan I wanted to keep
in mind the one ELL student at field placement. I had gotten to know her very well through
interviewing her, and knew from previous conversations that she really struggled to understand
grammar. When students were working individually on their writing assignment, I made sure to
visit this one student in particular to be sure that she understood the concept fully. This student
works very hard, and I know she is doing twice the amount of work as every other student due to the
language barrier. Through giving this student extra time to process the new information I was able
to then check for understanding when students were working independently. This

George Babbitt s Characters And Conformist Social Roles
Secondly, the characters experience conformist social roles. George Babbitt conforms to the
social role of being a father and husband. In Babbitt s society it is expected for men to be the bread
winner of the family and also to be faithful to his wife even if they are out of love. Babbitt is
experiencing the social stress from conforming to appear the best possible husband and father he
can be. George is out of lovewith his wife. He met Myra Babbitt when he was in college and he
did not even love her to begin with. He believed he should marry her because she was a honest
and a good wife (Lewis 81) material. Most men and women married either married for money or
that they felt obligated to marry someone to because it is expected of them.
Their marriage grew to become boring which tends to happen in most marriages. Instead of
George leaving Myra he stays, because he feels it is his moral obligation to do so. Hence, he is
out of love it leads him to temptation. Babbitt imagines a fairy child (Lewis 5). He uses the fairy
child as his escape form reality. He knows he cannot morally cheat on his wife, therefore he
imagines a life without her with other women. The first woman he imagines being with is McGoun
(describe her from the book). The second woman he imagines being with is Eunice (describe her
from the book). The third woman is (look her up). All these women resemble what he wishes his
wife could be like, McGoun is a worker, Eunice is young, and the last one is lively, Myra is none
of these things. Myra has the social life of being a housewife. She plans dinners, she reads
magazine, her children do not pay attention, and her husband does not love her. While George is
going through struggle of being faithful, he eventually gives up and cheats on Myra. The social
role is his playing is such a burden on him that he cracks under pressure and does not care what
people think of his scandalous ways. While he is having this newfound revolution, Myra is also
having her own revolution. She becomes more lively and appears younger and George falls in love
with her again. George discovers that he is allowed to have his type of fun without his wife but

United States Government Essay
United States Government
The United States has a deeply rooted and embedded tradition through the Constitution of having a
federalist style of governing as its structural framework for operating and guiding the government
of the country. The form of governing is best described as a balance between powers of the central
government and the powers of each independent and autonomic state. Federalism is a system in
which the power to govern is shared between national and provincial (state) governments, creating
what is often called a federation (Wikipedia 1).This style of governance has not been the only
structure instituted in American history in order to implement civilized law and order among the
people of the land. Prior to the ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
The decision by a nation of people to implement one of the three main forms of government,
confederacy, unitary, or federalism, is an important aspect in defining the nature and role of
government in the lives of its citizens. Confederacies exist as a group of autonomous individual
states, regions, or member components who form a national body, or centralized government, to
represent their independent interests at a more regional and international level. The existence of the
national government is derived from the consent of each governed autonomous state or region. The
entities that submit to this central ruling authority are able to withdraw from the compact that binds
them together. The national authority created is only bestowed with the powers, authority, and
privileges which the independent components in the confederacy allow. If any member component
feels its interests are no longer being served or the compact has interfered with its autonomy, then
that entity of the confederacy can sever its ties with the national body. This can occur because the
state, region, or member component has the supreme ultimate authority over its own affairs. As
further examination and analysis will demonstrate there is no inherent authority invested into the
national government as is the case of a federalist system. The most relevant examples of a

Adam Smith And Jean Jacques Rousseau
ADAM SMITH AND JEAN JACQUES ROUSSEAU.
Adam Smith(1723 1790) and Jean Jacques Rousseau(1712 1770) each provide their own distinctive
social thought. Smith, political economist and moral philosopher, is regarded as the father of
modern economics. Rousseau, a Franco Swiss social and political philosopher, combines
enlightenment and semi romantic themes in his work. Thus Smith s work places emphasis on the
relationship between economics and society, whereas, Rousseau focuses his attention on the social
inequalities within society. Therefore, Smith and Rousseau, of the Scottish and Continental
Enlightenment respectively, provide unique insights on their existing society.

For Adam Smith, the development of a commercial society produced a social structure divided
into three classes, landowners, capitalists, and labourers, the three great constituent orders of
every civilized society (Smith, 1998:27). Thus, Smith s ideal society would be of people would
work for themselves. He was a strong advocate for free market and posed strong opposition to the
feudal system. He, along with other Enilghtenment thinkers, believed that the State had no
legitmate role in the free market. Smith s defence of the free market was tied to the belief that
state interference with the market benefits the rich and hurts the poor(Lecture Notes, 2001:5).
Therefore, Adam Smith s vision of an ideal society was one in which most people are involved in
independent commodity production(Lecture Notes, 2001:5). Thus for society to develop and
prosper as a whole, its individual members must serve their self interests.
Jean Jacques Rousseau s work, in contrast to Smith s, gives attention to the social inequalities
within society created by social development. Rousseau believes the social development that the
Scottish Enlightenment thinkers advocate, actually create a web of problems that previously did
not exist. More specifically, his work concentrates on the articificial social inequalities. The artifical
refers to the specifically socially or conventional aspects of reality the conditions of human life that

Zionism and Non Zionists Essays
Zionism declares that the Jews are more than a purely religious body, they are not only a race
but also a nation (Berkowitz 376). Theodor Herzl, the father of political Zionism, states, We are a
people one people. Both Herzl and Berkowitz have interesting key points about a Jewish State, the
Jewish religion in general, and how to solve current issues in the religion. A State is formed by a
social contract and is still being created today. Rousseau states, The conditions of this contract are
so precisely defined by the nature of the agreement that the slightest alterations would make them
null and void. The consequence is that, even where they are not expressly stated, they are

This fact proves that all Jews should and will stand together to solve and work out the problems
such as poor treatment and portrayal. Herzl emphasizes, It is true that the Jewish State is
conceived as a peculiarly modern structure on unspecified territory. But a State is formed, not by
pieces of land, but rather by a number of men united under sovereign rule. For example, the
portrayal of Jews from a non Zionist is much different from Zionists. It is an egregious and fatal
error of the Zionists that they accept the misery of Israel as permanent, his wretchedness as
hopeless (Berkowitz 372). Although forming a State or declaring an important religion can be
difficult, there are many other risks such as, land disputes, current communities moving to a new
land, views of merging with other countries, past and future suffering, and the most important,
the emphasis on religion or nation. The first step to becoming a respected religious State is
forming a society of Jews to perform scientific and political tasks. Second, Christians and current
citizens of the State would be forced to move and find new land, like in times of war or destroyed
land. Herzl does point out that if the Jewish State had help from the Christians it would become a
peaceable voluntary departure of colonists. Third, the Jews have attempted to merge many places
in the social life of other countries and to prefer faith of

The global economy has a significant importance of banking sector. The banks are the major player
that runs the money market and enhances the investment opportunities to help the economy grow

multinational banks run their operations to capture the market. Multinational banks are more
attractive for few consumers in terms of service quality, rate of returns, global goodwill and strong

Nail Polish Research Paper
Nail polish originated in China, and dates back to about 3000 BC.Nail polish wasn t nearly as
advanced as it is now, and the Chinese used it for many different reasons than we do nowadays.
The different colors they made represented different things to them, as opposed to today where
we just paint our nails for fun. Red, gold, and silver were the main colors used at that time with
red representing more powerful people in the higher classes. Beeswax, gum arabic, egg whites,
natural dyes and gelatin were the ingredients used to make nail polish before chemicals were
introduced. Petals from flowers such as roses gave the polish color. In nail polish, there are
plasticizers. The plasticizers are what makes the polish stick to your nail. Some main chemicals
that are found in the plasticizers are acid and castor oil, which also makes the nail polish flexible,
preventing cracks in the nail polish and therefor making it also last longer. Nitrocellulose

If sustainable tourism development is successful, it may help pro poor tourism to reduce the

In 1996 the government of South Africa published the White Paper on the Development and
Promotion of Tourism which set frameworks for South Africa s new tourism policy. (Richards
Wilson, 2007) The White Paper identifies that community based tourism has a lot of potential on
developing South Africa s economy and implies many examples of community participation
possibilities. It also recognises the difficulties of community tourism, for example a lack of
awareness, lack of information or training and lack of access to finance. (Hughes Vaughan, 2001)
Over the last decade there have been major changes in tourism development and actions in

The Fighter Movie Analysis
The Fighter (2010) directed by David O Russell is a captivating and passionate sports drama.
The film was easily able to portray the journey that the Eklund Ward family took on Micky s
road to success in a realistic way which made it easy for me to understand and develop emotions
towards the film and the characters in it. It was an exceptional watch which captured my full
attention. The film made me realise there is always a struggle with success. I saw and experience
this while watching the film and I am able to take this new found awareness with me into the real
world when the film is over. The performance of the characters and the realistic portrayal of drugs
in this film are major aspects that make this film so beguiling.
In the film the main character Micky Ward is a very promising boxer. Being a boxer is a family
thing, his mother, Alice Ward, is his manager and his stepbrother brother, Dicky Eklund, is his
trainer. Dicky is unreliable and Alice is very resilient. The two were very controlling over Micky
and feel they have some sense of supremacy of him. However, even though Micky is working
hard to try and make the best of his situation, he keeps getting blows that knock him down. They
come in from the left, the right and all other directions, the hits that he receives seem to be the
consequences of having Dicky and Alice as part of team. Despite this and his latest fight being
unsuccessful, Micky still gets back in the ring.

Pop Art And Its Influence On American Culture
If Pop art was a from of realism, it was a realism that represented the ways American consumer
culture had altered the perception of reality itself. Pop artists imagined themselves confronting a
world in which the scale and compass of consumer capitalism, with its near total saturation of
society, exceeded traditional perceptual structures (Miller 598). Pop Artmovement took place in
various cities but mainly in New York in the sixties and became popular within two or three years.
Artist from this movement worked on imagery originally created for the base amusement of
lowbrows (Scherman 68). This movement took place to get rid of boundaries between high art and
low culture. I think the artist s concept behind their work to show everyone that there is no
hierarchy of culture. Pop Art was mainly about using other artists work and adding their own

Walker Moment At Walmart
My Reflection Schaie and Sherry (2016) state that (p.?). I would like to start by saying that I
quite liked this assignment and past my partial embarrassment from walking my walker around
it was a really eye opening experience. Probably at least partially because of the embarrassment.
I went to three places while using the walker and these places were Walmart, my apartment, and
my anatomy lecture. The first place I well address during this reflection well be Walmart. Out of
all of the places I would say this was easiest to traverse while using the walker. The aisles were
quite large and well suited for walker movement, although I soon found out that it was impossible
to move the cart along with the walker, so I was lucky my girlfriend... Show more content on

This was without a doubt the most difficult of the three locations that I used the walker. My
apartment is absolutely not designed for walker use. Firstly, the steps leading up to my
apartment door are often covered in ice during the colder months because of how the roof pours
water onto them. Not that, that was problem while using my walker, but I could easily foresee a
horrible accident if I was less able to catch myself while walking up or down them. Then after
enduring the walk up the stairs you get into the apartment and through the door. Luckily it is
one the first floor of the apartment building, so I don t have to go up the steeper, smaller flight
of stairs that lead to the second floor apartments. After entering the apartment, you well come to
find that we have are apartment set up in such a way that we often end up sliding sideways past
many things. For example, we often have a fan sitting in front of the door way into our room
and this is a pain in the ass to move with the walker. Because the top of it slides off if you do not
also grab the bottom part with it, so moving it while using the walker is next to impossible. Then
there is the kitchen. It is almost impossible to open the door of the fridge while the walker is in the
kitchen. It takes some rather clever maneuvering and effort to achieve the feat. So certainly not
ideal. Than it goes from the almost impossible kitchen, to the literally impossible

Personal Narrative-My First President Bill Clinton
I found myself in bar in downtown alexandria, the day before president elect donald trump would
be sworn into office as the 45th president of the united states. I was enjoying a beer when
conversation between a stranger and myself manifested in the way that conversations at bars do
spontaneously. His name was john and surprisingly he attended jmu just a few years ago. We made
small talk and relished in what a coincidence it was to have met each other. It wasn t long before
the conversationturned political, not a surprise for the dc metro area and especially with the
election just a day away. I liked john, he seemed like a nice guy, however i found myself in strong

I waded through the crowds, and struck up conversations with anyone willing. One gentleman
stated that trump would be the only president that wasn t a politician, forgetting Reagan,
Eisenhower, Grant, and of course George Washington, just to name a few. A group of protesters,
held up signs that read resist and called trump a fascist, but when questioned on the definition of
fascism, didn t know it; alas the ignorance is nonpartisan. Protesters were heard chanting blocks
away during Trump s speech, although faint. Quickly after i made my way to the protests, not
necessarily to take part, but to witness just as i witnessed the inauguration. At mcpherson square
in dc there was quite a large gathering, and michael moore gave a speech to inspire us into
action. As i walked around taking the experience in, i noticed a couple young trump supporters
with their red hats on, being surrounded by a group of protesters dressed in all black. Things
turned violent, with water bottles being thrown, then rocks, and eventually one was kicked to the
ground. I helped him up, and escorted him away from the hostile protesters but just as we were
clear, a masked man hit him with a stick from a nearby tree. My initial instinct was to go after him,
and i lunged, however i second guessed myself and attended to the fallen trump supporter until the

You Are Who You Pretend To Be
I recently was introduced to a Kurt Vonnegut quote by a friend. It was mentioned only in passing
and was likely meant only to carry the conversation on, but I have come back to it many times in
my thoughts. The quotation was a warning: Be careful who you pretend to be because you are
who you pretend to be . The truth behind this sentiment is far more pertinent to our lives than we
might like to think. We all have visions of who we are based on what we know, how we compare
ourselves to others, and how we attempt to act, but the actuality of who we are exists
independently of that personal ideal. The truth of the matter is that, regardless of our apparent
individuality, the way we act around others, how we dress and talk, and our general... Show more

When we actively pursue our desires, we take on traits favorable to the completion of our goals.
The assimilation of those traits into our personality may be little more than a result of repetition,
but they become a basis upon which our identity might change or, more consequentially, be judged.
This idea of the formulation of identity is not unfounded, and, although not overtly present in
literature, can be witnessed in certain characters just as in the real world. In order to keep this
essay at least somewhat on topic with the class, I would like to relate this idea to at least some
works which we have read. To observe such formulations of identity in literature, it is usually
unwise to look at the main character. Although that is the main place to find character development,
it wouldn t be a good novel if the character were to constantly change his ideas and behaviors.
The first character who I believe shows just how this idea of identity holds true is the ever
despised Arthur Chillingworth. The very nature of his character is action. Though he is not a
character who we see as active physically in obtaining his goals, without his drive for revenge on
Hester and Dimmesdale he would not be noteworthy at all. Unless he was a peculiar individual in
his life before the story of the scarlet letter, it could be assumed that he was not previously driven
by revenge. It is understandable, then, to look at him as an individual

Table 1 Organizes All Observational And Statistical Data
Table 1 organizes all observational and statistical data throughout the experimentation. Mass and
volume amounts from various reagents were based upon these values and therefore are
insignificant in a table. Each beginning, intermediate, and final product demonstrated shows the
initial mass recorded before the next reactionary process began. At the end of each
experimentation set, a dollop of sample was utilized to examine IR peaks and melting point range.
The IR peaks displayed are the peaks present in the experimental samples that support the pure
identity of the product. General observations during and after procedures were noted and are

DISCUSSION
The first place to start on overall success of the experimentation would be the IR and melting
point values. If the IR and melting point reveal to match exactly with literature values, the whole
of experimentation can be deemed successful. Unfortunately, the reality is not as simple, for even
a slight impure peak or skewness in melting point shows flaw in the sample product. Benzaldehyde
was the first chemical in question. For this lab example, pure benzaldehyde was provided. For
exemplary purposes, the IR of benzaldehyde was taken to track the peak alterations that could occur
in later steps. The melting point provides further evidence of the purity of the benzaldehyde, but
purity was assumed and therefore melting point was not taken. Benzaldehyde is a simple aromatic
compound with a aldehyde group; therefore, expected peaks are the aromatic ring constituents,
C=O bond representative of aldehydes, and C H bonds representative of aldehydes. According to
the expected literature values in place for this functional groups, benzaldehyde was sufficiently
pure, containing all the correct values. With the correct IR spectrograph available, all following IR
samplings follow stepwise in junction with the first. Further skewness can thus be considered flaw
in procedure and not benzaldehyde. Benzoin condensed from a catalyzed reaction with Vitamin B
and benzaldehyde, mixed with various basic and acidic

Physics Of Baseball Essay
Physics is used all the time in our daily lives. It is used in almost everything that we do for
example, playing basketball, walking, running, driving and of course our subject of the day is
physics behind baseball. Baseball uses physics in everything like, throwing a ball, running to the
bases, catching the ball, and batting. Batting is one of the main things in baseballthat use a lot of
physicsbecause it is important that you know how hard , and where to swing in order to get the
ball to where you want it to go. If you face the bat up you will hit a pop fly and the other player
will immediately run under it and catch it. Forcealso plays an important role in baseball when it

are lines marked all around the field where it indicates that the balls that cross the line is

Generally Accepted Accounting Principles
Generally Accepted Accounting Principles (United States)
In the U.S., generally accepted accounting principles, commonly abbreviated as US GAAP or
simply GAAP, are accounting rules used to prepare, present, and report financial statements for a
wide variety of entities, including publicly traded and privately held companies, non profit
organizations, and governments. Generally GAAP includes local applicable Accounting
Framework, related accounting law, rules and Accounting Standard.
Similar to many other countries practicing under the common law system, the United States
government does not directly set accounting standards, in the belief that the private sector has better
knowledge and resources. US GAAP is not written in law, although... Show more content on

This principle allows greater evaluation of actual profitability and performance (shows how much
was spent to earn revenue). Depreciation and Cost of Goods Sold are good examples of application
of this principle.
Disclosure principle. Amount and kinds of information disclosed should be decided based on trade
off analysis as a larger amount of information costs more to prepare and use. Information disclosed
should be enough to make a judgment while keeping costs reasonable. Information is presented in
the main body of financial statements, in the notes or as supplementary information

Objectivity principle: the company financial statements provided by the accountants should be

Materiality principle: the significance of an item should be considered when it is reported. An item
is considered significant when it would affect the decision of a reasonable individual.
Consistency principle: It means that the company uses the same accounting principles and methods

Prudence principle: when choosing between two solutions, the one that will be least likely to

The Censorship Of Singapore ( Mda )
The practise of censorship the restriction of ideas, action or image through the control of the media
or any other medium of expression. Censorship should be practised sensibly so that it will not
restrict the development and expression of new ideas while ensuring that social and political
harmony is assured. Censorshipplays a vital role in maintaining the morals of its society and
creating an economically dynamic, socially cohesive and culturally vibrant nation. (N.A, N.D)
The press exert a significant influence on the public and is partly responsible for the views and
values that many hold. Hence, it should be responsible with what it put forth to the public.
Singapore has gradually moved from film censorship to film classification and now to the focus
on media literacy. Media Authority of Singapore (MDA) plays a significant role in regulating and
conducting matters pertaining to the media. It is guided by legislation/acts such as Media
Development Authority of Singapore Act, code of practice and guideline to comply and enforce
the entities. In this term paper, we will discuss how the media handle censorship and classification
related matters as well as reviewing the Films Appeal Committee under the films act policy. In this
regard, recommendations will also be given on how to improve the clause.
The media environment has undergone major changes, driven largely by the forces of technology,

How Audiences Perceive Strong Female Characters,...
To test how audiences perceive strong female characters, Oppenheimer, Goodman, Adams‐Price,
Codling, and Coker (2003) ran a study where they had participants rate strong female characters
on a feminine to masculine scale, as well as attractiveness, sex appeal, relatability not a word, and
humor on a 7 point scale. The aim was to see how participants would respond to a femalevoice, if
an assertive actress would be characterized as masculine, and in general how female characters
are perceived by viewers. What they found was that women found the female characters to be
slightly stronger than men did, that the actresses were seen as slightly feminine do you mean
they were found to be slightly above the mean for femininity? Not sure what slightly feminine
means, and that attractiveness, sex appeal, and humor had no real impact on the perception of
power. Also provide more detail here were there weaker female characters that were also rated?
Or those perceived as less attractive? Knowing that women and men both consume and internalize
representations and stereotypes portrayed in media, it is important to then look at how women
are being depicted and what some causes behind this shift could be. Lauzen and Dozier (2005)
investigated if popular films continue to carry out the idea too vague use more precise language
that men are powerful and successful and women are submissive and not as successful by looking
at an analysis of the top 88 domestic grossing films of 2002.

Childhood Obesity Policy Essay
One Health and Social Care Policy which I am going to critically review is the childhood obesity
policy. The 2010 2015 government policy: Obesity and Healthy Eating was updated in May 2015
and states many ways for improvements to be made. The purpose of this policy is to try to reduce
the amount of unhealthy foods children eat in the UK.
A key factor of health in later life is childhood obesity. Childhood obesity is a medical condition
where excess body fat negatively affects a child s health or well being. Medical conditions are not
the only factor which causes children to be obese it is the parental/family influences as well.
Family influences on children are a huge factor because when children are younger they eat what

depiction of Jerusalem in the biblical texts justifies the presence of these characteristics in this
pivotal space for three major religions; God s high recognition of Jerusalem and people s

more or less special , singular , or set apart . (Tweed 2011:119). These differentiated spaces, unlike
unnamed generic locales, can sensorially touch the devotees and affect their daily life, no matter

The movie showed a large area for soldiers to play soccer together. The opposing war teams
would often go together to play soccer. However, reports show that the conditions of the ground
as well as the barbed wire and more made it very unlikely for an organized game of soccer to
take place. There is no evidence from unit war diaries and regimental histories that the soccer
games have taken place. This is a significant historical inaccuracy because the soccer scene was a
major scene that showed how close the soldiers were able to get. This largely impacts the movie
because like the other evidence mentioned earlier, the audience will not be able to comprehend
the motions of the soldiers if this scene were to be removed. This scene was important because it
emphasized the war relationship and defined how every soldier was just a regular human who is
forced to fight. Furthermore, the movie shows the trenches looking not in bad terms. The movie
showed soldiers being fairly clean and comfortable. The soldiers were seen fairly clean and were
not suffering any diseases. However, in WWI, the trenches were very dirty as it was an area
where soldiers slept, ate, fought, got sick and went to the bathroom in. All of this was done in one

if the entire evidence in the world favored creationism, he would immediately recognize and shift
his stance on the issue. However, he also notes that as of now, the immense amount of accessible
evidence supports the theory of evolution. Dawkins establishes his stance on the creation of the
universe based on the side that has provides the most evidence. This reflects the basis on which
sciencerelies on evidence along with the fact that the acceptance or rejection of a scientific idea

The biggest overlap between the two sides being the theory on which the world was created.
Each cites their own evidence for their beliefs. Religion taking a side of biblical literalism that

where matter is the fundamental reality in the universe. Nothing has come to characterize
modern science more than its rejection of appeals to God in explaining the workings of nature.
(Numbers 265) Dawkins notes there s two sides, science and religion. He must choose one or the
other in the conflict of the creation of the universe. He puts aside scientific bias, and claims that
if evidence now heavily favored creationism he would, without hesitation, publicly change his
mind. Evidence is truly the pinnacle argument in the conflict between science and religion. The
chief difference is evidence. In science it s ultimately based on the observation of nature and
evidence in religion is largely based on faith. In the case for science there s actual proof that you

Analysis Of Benjamin Button And The Great Gatsby
Dissatisfaction in Benjamin Button and The Great Gatsby
In the novel The Great Gatsby and the short story Benjamin Button , the characters are dissatisfied
with aspects in life. In The Great Gatsby dissatisfaction is associated with lack of fulfillment in
Dreams. In Benjamin Button dissatisfaction is surrounded by Benjamin s curious case of aging in
reverse.
Through these two pieces of writing by Fitzgerald there are a lot of unhappy relationships. With
bad relationships come trends such as abusive traits from typically one party, whether it be
emotionally or physically. In The Great Gatsby Tom Buchanan is a cruel man who is dominant and
aggressive with a strong physique. With these attributes he is a prime candidate for an abusive lover.
Look! she complained: I hurt it, we all looked the knuckle black and blue. You did it, Tom, she
said accusingly. I know you didn t mean to, but you did do it. That s what I get for marrying a
brute of a man (Gatsby 17).
In the above quotation Tom has hurt and bruised Daisy s finger. Tom is a man who views
women as a sexual object. He abuses women because he is a man who craves power. He is not
getting the gratification of power out of his relationship with Daisy and in his day to day life so
he harms the ones close to him as seen with Daisy s finger and later on in the novel when breaking
Myrtle s nose. This quotation also shows how Daisy is discontent with her relationship with Tom.

Research Methodology For A Researcher
RESEARCH METHODOLOGY Research methodology involves the design which a researcher
ought to use to study a topic of interest. It therefore involves the procedure by which researchers
undertake their work and the framework within which is conducted (Rajasekar et al., 2013;
Remenyi et al., 1998). Research Methodology aids research planning, if properly design it will
enable a researcher to arrive at results or findings and tools that can either be used to disprove or
approve such knowledge. (Nachamias et al., 1996; Saunders et al.,2003). This chapter outlines data
collection procedure as well as how data is analyse for this study. These involve choice of the
sampling frame, sampling techniques, how interviews were designed and conducted as well as
questionnaire administration, time horizon, transcription of interviews and analysis of responses,
ethical concerns and limitations of the methods. Qualitative Research Methods Qualitative research
method was chosen for this study. It involves an interpretative inquiry and a naturalistic approach
to an area of study (Denzin, Lincoln, 2005; Qazi, 2011). Researchers therefore make an
interpretation of what they observe, hear, and understand (Creswell 2003). Qualitative research
method was suitable and adopted to deal with the study objectives since the research was more
naturalistic, participant driven and comprehensive (Ciceu, 2015) as well as inquiring. Methods of

abyss he is facing, the illogical process of love, is made even more horrible by the shattering of
the rules of propriety, he, so necessarily, adhered. Anna sees in him emotionless conventionality
and she points in him the same faults Emma addresses to Charles, he understands nothing, he
feels nothing, a ministerial machine lacking of imagination and passion. And indeed the
distance between him and Charles is never great, Tolstoy, through Anna s hatred, tries to make
of him a caricature of a man as Flaubert did with Charles. The cartilage of his ears, his weary
eyes, slow voice, flat feet, the way he swings his pelvis, the blue veins on his white hands, the
cracking of his knuckles, all these details recall very closely the stamp Emma abhors in Charles.
All the same, Tolstoy s characters are never wholly evil or wholly good. They are real. Karenin
is an hypocrite who mirrors the morality Anna has offended: when on the carriage back home she
first confesses to love someone else, Tolstoy has her conceding: No, you are not mistaken, she said
slowly, looking desperately at his cold face and between her desperation and his indifference passes
all the difference between the epic she represents and the etiquette he embodies. And yet, there is
something missing in almost everything Karenin does in the novel: he has no poetic sentiments but

Brown 3Jane BrownProfessor GEnglish 10118 October 2015Hemingway s Glorious Paris It
was the 1920 s and the end of World War I. The cobblestone streets are lined with store fronts and
cafГ©s. Down the road you could hear a small roar coming from The Dingo Bar ; as you
approach it, you see a group of men sharing stories of the war and their discontent of today s
society. Your eye is drawn to a young man in the middle of the table. As he sips his wine, he turns
his head towards you, and in that moment he shines his charming smile directly at you. This is how
I always envisioned my first meeting with Ernest Hemingway in Paris if I had been there. The years
Hemingway spent in Paris would play an important role in his first marriage, the development of
his writing style, and was the backdrop to many adventures as a young man. Ernest Hemingway
arrived in Paris in December of 1921 with his wife Hadley Richardson, whom he had married (in
October of the previous year.) the previous year in October (sounds better). Hadley was a very
simple and meek girl that was dominated by hermother. All that changed once she met the
handsome young writer/explorer (and explorer take out the slash symbol) Ernest Hemingway. She
once told a friend the he was an Explosion in herlife (Chicago Tribune) Soon after they meet, they
were married and on their way to Paris. In December, 1922, they arrived in Paris and began living
their Bohemian lifestyle, even though they lived on

Art Essay
The context, of which art is created, clearly reflects its history and where it is from. Society s
values are further highlighted by the piece and give us insight into what life was like. This is
interestingly interpreted by Juan Bautista de Espinosa s exuberant baroque style painting, with a
heavily catholic influence from Spain in the late 1500 s, as well as Margaret Olley s contrasting
and simplistic sensibility of the mid 20th century. Each artist s aesthetic, although significantly

The Spanish Empire, in an effort to increase its size and spread Catholicism, carried out many
conquests overseas. In Bautista s work Still Life with Grapes, Flowers, and Shells, 1628 reflects
the new delights that the new world had to offer . The arrangement of shells and exotic birds
and flowers, is a combination of old and new: with a traditional style of painting depicting
exciting and unexplored goods. This could possibly be a metaphor for the rather old and powerful
Spanish empire, exploring into the unknown. The subtle uses of bright bold colours of peach and
chartreuse, as well as warm earth tones are a clear reflection of the South American tropics, along
with their exotic flora and fauna, and humid climate. It also creates moods of excitement in
anticipation of what else there is to explore. The lusciousness of the brush strokes and use of
highlights give the painting a new life, in the both things harsh like the foliage of the plants and
soft like plumage of the birds. The sombre background and traditional table ground the contrasting
arrangement and forms the basic structure of the piece. It also competes with the display, just like
Spain and its conquest against other nations.
Margaret Olley is possibly one of Australia s most famous still life painters. Born in 1923, Olley

As reported by Shih (2010), in The Facebook Era, more than 750 million people around the world
are on social networking sites, where they seemingly spend more than 20 billion minutes a day.
With so many people spending time on social networking sites, it only seems logical that these sites
might be used as a stage for marketing, sales, employment prospects, and making business contacts,
just to name a few possibilities.
With so many choices for social networking platforms, it is important to know what the social web
is all about, what different sites are out there and how they differ from one another. Chief among
the popular social networking sites are Facebook, Twitter, and LinkedIn. Each of these sites is
utilized for different reasons, and to best use them to your advantage in business, you should be
aware of the differences. Facebook, according to Shih (2010) and many of her sources, is the
largest social networking site globally by an order of magnitude, and recently even beat out
Google in becoming the most trafficked site on the Internet. With that said, it should be obvious
that there is tremendous business potential for marketing, advertisement, and sales on sites such as
Facebook. Besides Facebook, LinkedIn is also a very popular site; used by more than 95% of

Divergent by Veronica Roth Essay example
In life, each person, book, movie, and much more contains a worldview or outlook on life as a
whole. Lao Tzu states that a worldview is, When people see some things as beautiful, other
things become ugly. When people see some things as good, other things become bad. Despite the
fact that most people, movies, books, and other components in life do not realize that they have a
worldview, in reality, they actually do. One specific example of an element in society that contains
a worldview, is the action filled and world renowned book entitled Divergent. This specific
element contains a striking plotline, worldview, and purpose in order to catch the attention of
people around the world. Beatrice Prior lives in a dystopian world... Show more content on

This is no exception in the book Divergent. The society in Divergent split into five distinct factions
known as Candor, Abnegation, Dauntless, Amity, and Erudite. From this information, one can infer
the worldview depicted in this novel is that one choice defines who a person is forever. This
worldview is seen all throughout the book, due to the author s focus on choice. The characters are
forced to choose which faction they wish to reside in, thus possibly leaving all that they
previously had known and grown accustomed to. This reality is brutally true for Beatrice Prior
as she is forced to come to grips with making this type of decision. Upon making her ultimate
decision to join Dauntless she states, This is what I chose. This is it. Numerous other decisions
are put in front of Beatrice Prior throughout the plot, therefore proving the worldview in
Divergent to be rooted in decisions and choices. These choices, in turn, have a long term effect
on someone s life. The worldview in any novel is brought to life by the author. Taking a look at
the author of Divergent, known as Veronica Roth, one immediately comes to the conclusion that
she is a believer and follower of Jesus Christ. She freely professes her faith and love for the Lord;
therefore, one can see the intricate parallels from Divergent to the Scriptures. For example, the
concept of one choice defining the rest of a person s life or destiny is similar to the monumental
choice made in the Garden of Eden, which

My Most Memorable Experience
I have dyslexia. Sometimes it s hard to read or spell out loud. Reading is something that is at
times difficult to understand, because of misinterpretations, yet I love to become immersed in a
well written novel. Having that said I have had several experiences where reading has helped me to
become a better writer. When writingI tend to lack an ability to keep my writer interested. The
more I have read, the more I have found new ways to keep my readers entwined to what I want
to say when using tone or writing style. By reading many books I have found new ways to make
my writing exceptional. My most memorable experience started my first day of my Junior Senior
year. I walked into class with my small group of friends and the teacher that... Show more content

I had to pull my teacher to the side. I wanted to understand the books so I needed to listen to my
music. I explained to her my dyslexia and how I coped with it so that I could understand the
books that we read in class, she understood my struggles and helped me by letting me discretely
listen to music without any of my other classmates catching me doing it. With the music, I could
read books and not have difficulty understanding the words. I became one of the fastest readers
in her class, I bulldozed through the books that I had written down on my someday list. I came
to a point where I didn t have any more books that I was interested in reading until my teacher
started to give me suggestions on books that I should read. She had found that in one of the essays
I wrote, I would use the influences from the books I read to catch my reader s attention, I would
make my writing more interesting by using different writing techniques that I learned from reading
these books.
I began to read these books that Ms. Rasheed recommended for me and I found that the various

Creation Story Of Judith
Dairy foods were not popular until the middle ages when the story of Judith emerged. Judith was
a beautiful woman who saved her village from the Babylonians when their army was besieging
the village. Judith took it upon herself and bravely charmed her way into the enemy camp with a
basket of wine and cheese which she presented to the General. He ate and because the salty cheese
made him thirsty he drank more wine which was what Judith had hoped for. Once drunk Judith
beheaded the General and returned to her village with his head in a basket. The Babylonians then
left and so it became traditional from then onwards to eat dairy in honour of her bravery.

They use lots of spices like cumin, cinnamon and coriander. They cook chickpeas, lentils, rice and
like to flavour with garlic, lemon and herbs. They prefer lamb often cooked in a rich wine and
tomato sauce. They use a lot of olive oil on their food and salads. They enjoy pita bread, and tahini
spreads like we eat at home. For deserts they make use of honey, nuts and filo pastry.
Although chicken, lamb and short ribs are often eaten, braised brisket remains a firm favourite.
It is a traditional meat as not only is it tasty but it is cheap and as most families from eastern
Europe as well as Jewish families living in America were generally poor and therefore like most
poorer communities they could not afford the more tender cuts of meat.. Brisket could not only be
slow cooked but absorbed flavour really well, and by adding red wine, onions, spices and carrots,
the result was a tasty tender meat that could feed the family well.
There are no traditional vegetables although carrots and celery are often added to meat dishes.
Sweet carrots glazed with honey are popular and the Jews from Israel often stew carrots, prunes
and sweet potatoes with honey. Firm favourites would be eggplant, cabbage salad, cucumber and
tomato salad, beetroot, chilli including tahini sauce which they place in pita bread along with
falafel (chick pea balls that are

Fareed Zakaria
While reading In Defense of a Liberal Education by Fareed Zakaria there are several references
to the study of Art History, even one publicly mentioned by President Barack Obama. Among
these references in Zakaria s novel art history was perceived as frivolous, questionable and waste
of a degree, not all quotes but most. I had to understand why the study of art history is how the
World took it and why, along with what Zakaria himself deemed it to be and how art history just
might help me among my studies. My first observation was that I myself did not know what art
history even was and why it was deemed so horribly. Indefinitely I searched up the definition of art

Zakaria also explains that in today s day and age with all of the technology, they must master how
technology interacts with how the humans work and play. This depends on the skills promoted by
art history, ... Steve Jobs explained that It is in Apple s DNA that technology alone is not enough. It

that art history along with liberal arts is necessary in today s age.
Art history so far has such an impact on everyday life it would be no surprise that it will surely
play a part in my day to day life along with my studies even without recognizing it. For majors at
this point I am taking art along with criminal justice. Obviously art history will surely impact my
art classes, for you need to know genre, design, format, and style. All things that can apply to any
artist s work and any types of medium. As for criminal justice I had to do some research, I conjured
up that the FBI maintains a twelve person art crime team which investigates art thefts and frauds,
they also have forensic artist which are highly trained specialists that are experts in the
reconstruction of crime scenes, bone structure, and witness descriptions of criminals.

Rebecca Harding Davis Life In The Iron Mills
Rebecca Harding Davis was a groundbreaking author whose work, Life in the Iron Mills,
examined a socioeconomic system that failed some while keeping others empowered. The
issues of power and social class that are embedded in the work prompts readers to look closer at
the unskilled immigrant laborers, whose living and working conditions were deplorable, and
compare them to the capitalists and wealthy mill owners whose financial success rested mainly
on the workers who were being marginalized. The narrator s call to the readers, Stop a
moment...hide your disgust, take no heed to your clean clothes, and come right down with me, is

Argumentative Essay On Self Reliance
Everyone in life has at least one person who has strongly influenced them in one way or another,
but what if that influence ended up being hurtful? In the essay Self Reliance by Ralph Emerson,
Emerson gives his advice on how to live independently. Emerson says self reliance is to trust
oneself and believe in oneself. He states that this is important because being self reliant leads to
a successful path in life. By having individual ideas one will end up doing something she or he
wants to do in life which causes success for that individual. He discusses how the only person
one needs to listen to in life is oneself and that no other person should influence one s life. I
believe there are people in this world that can have a negative influence on one s life, but also
people that can have a positive influence. For example, in basketballmy positive influences
(parents, teammates, and coaches) help me to succeed in a team sport. Emerson begins his
article by talking about the importance of self reliance. He defines self reliance as thinking for
oneself and not letting anyone else influence one in any way, shape, or form. As a human being
this may be one of the most difficult tasks. Emerson explains that being self reliant can be
difficult especially for adults because they are too worried about their reputations and how
others will look upon them. Emerson also says, Trust thyself (2). Emerson believes that one
should go with his or her gut in everything she or he does. Even if what she or he wants to do
goes against the thoughts of others she or he still needs to pursue his or her dreams. The last thing
Emerson wants people to do is be embarrassed of what others will think of themselves. People need
to throw away others thoughts and opinions and follow one s own.
Emerson also believes that one can be great through being self reliant. He says, To be great is to
be misunderstood (7). This tells one that if others seem to be judging or confused on what one is
doing with his or her life, one should ignore the others, and continue to follow what she or he
believes. Emerson explains that if one is misunderstood by others that she or he is on the path to
success. For example, when Jesus followers were

  • 2. Essay Abraham Lincoln As the 16th president, Abraham Lincoln was known to be the greatest American President. He guided his country through one of the most catastrophic experiences in its history, the Civil War. He was a very unique president, being the first president to have a beard, being the tallest president standing at 6 4 and also being the first to be assassinated. Abe Lincoln accomplished many things in the 4 year term he had served before being assassinated. With his intelligence and hard work, he made a difference in the United States. He worked as a store keeper, and later was chosen to become militia captain in the Black Hawk War and postmaster. Lincoln s political career began in 1832. Even though he did not win a seat in the State Legislature, two years later he won a seat as a Whig. He served four terms as a Whig and by doing so he started becoming popular statewide. Lincoln later began to study law and in 1836 he was licensed to practice. Being successful he moved to the new capital Springfield. November 2, 1842 he married Mary Todd who came from a very wealthy family later had four sons by the name of Robert, Edward, William, and Thomas. • 3. Anthem Individuality Essay Individuality in Anthem Ceaseless collectivism is not something that can be forced upon a community. Ayn Rand s novel Anthem conveys this through the writings of Equality 7 2125, a man willing to stand up to the collectivism of the society he is confined to. Anthem not only shows how dull and lifeless a society can be with a lack of individuality in its people, but also reveals how one person can significantly impact a community. This novel displays the importance of individualism through Equality s thoughts and actions. This includes when he reinvents electricity in the tunnel, falls in love with Liberty, and when he completely separates himself from society. Equality s individualism is prominent when he purposely isolates himself in ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... In addition, Equality continues to make his individualism known by preferring a woman, Liberty 3 5000, above all. While sweeping the streets, Equality takes notice of a woman working in the fields. He is instantly intrigued by her and thinks of her over all others. Equality s attitude is significantly changed by his interactions with Liberty. We do not know why we think of them. We do not know why, when we think of them, we feel of a sudden that earth is good and that it is not a burden to live (Rand 41). Individualism is shown when Equality chooses to favor Liberty. Equality looked at her, even though there were other women in the field that day. He chooses Liberty above all the woman. Equallity shows a preference in only her, which shows individuality. To add, Equality is becoming more unruly and disobiedient by continuing to break rules. The crimes he comits involve talking to woman of other Trades, looking upon woman, and the Transgression of Preference, which is to prefer someone or something above others. Equality s love for Liberty continues to isolate and detach him from his brothers. His love for Liberty motivates him to banish himself from his society and cut off all his ties to it. Equality s individuality grows further when he purposely separates himself from his society and obliterates the last of his identity that associates himself with the City. While showing his light to the Council of Scholars, they tell ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

  • 6. Genetic Interventions And The Ethics Of Enhancement Of... When you look at society today, it is plausible to say half of the population is affected by cancer or disease. Now based on the millions of people on this earth, this assumption is not one to be proud of. Day by day and year by year medical advancements have been in affect and so far helping decrease the number of deadly cases of disease. Recently researchers have made a major breakthrough in the field of medicine. Technology has become so advanced that physicians are able to detect disease present in genes inside a fetus before it is completely developed. Because they are now able to identify the gene, it brings up a whole new topic of altering specific genes upon our children to physically enhance them. In most cases, parents would choose to enhance these genes to have athletic or musically talented child. Now whether you think this is ethical or not is up to you however, I will be evaluating three articles on this topic and presenting the argument for each one. Julian Savulescu wrote Genetic Interventions and the Ethics of Enhancement of HumanBeings and in this article he clearly states his position on the issues as well as providing supporting and opposing sides to the matter. He starts off by explaining this issue is focused on biological enhancement and more specifically genetic enhancement. Then the thesis statement is provided, I want to argue that, far from it s being merely permissible, we have a moral obligation or moral reason to enhance ourselves and our ... • 7. Discipline In The Veldt Parents choose to discipline their children to help them grow as people. Positive punishment goes a long way in developing character and instilling morals. In contrast, a lack of discipline can cause children to rebel or put themselves in dangerous situations. This is apparent in Ray Bradbury s The Veldt. Characters Wendy and Peter are shown little love and discipline by their parents, which has severe consequences later in the story. Through allusion, irony, and setting Bradbury shows that discipline is vital to the growth of children. Bradbury describes the purr of the lions breathing in combination with their eyes to create a feeling of superiority or power. This motif shows the extreme lack of power or control that George and Lydia have over their children. After entering the room and admiring the mechanical genius of the technology, George and Lydia noticed they were staring at two ferocious lions only 15 feet away. Bradbury notes the sound of their matted lion lungs exhaling on the silent noontide (Bradbury 3). This not only would create fear at such a close proximity, but it shows how strong the lions are. Bradbury then mentions how the lions stood looking at George and Lydia Hadley with terrible yellow green eyes (Bradbury 3). Again, this attribute shows the power the lions possess. When considering the family, the children, much like the lions, have more power than the parents. The lack of power George and Lydia have allows Wendy and Peter to feel superior ... • 9. I Have Learned Through Teaching One of the many things that I have learned through teaching young people is that time goes by a lot faster. In reflecting from my field teaching lessons, I realized that there were many things that I was pleased with, but I also realized that there were many things I know I need to work on. Watching a video of you teach a class is the absolute best way to self evaluate yourself. We are most critical of ourselves when we can see our work played back to us. This experience has not only been helpful in my teachingmethods, but it has helped me to establish a more professional and authoritative essence in the classroom. The students were able to choose what incident they wanted to write about from their lived experiences. After my minilesson on verbals I wanted students to incorporate these into their own writing to add action and precise details about their significant incident. During this lesson plan I wanted to keep in mind the one ELL student at field placement. I had gotten to know her very well through interviewing her, and knew from previous conversations that she really struggled to understand grammar. When students were working individually on their writing assignment, I made sure to visit this one student in particular to be sure that she understood the concept fully. In Babbitt s society it is expected for men to be the bread winner of the family and also to be faithful to his wife even if they are out of love. Babbitt is experiencing the social stress from conforming to appear the best possible husband and father he can be. George is out of lovewith his wife. He met Myra Babbitt when he was in college and he did not even love her to begin with. He believed he should marry her because she was a honest and a good wife (Lewis 81) material. Most men and women married either married for money or that they felt obligated to marry someone to because it is expected of them. Their marriage grew to become boring which tends to happen in most marriages. Instead of George leaving Myra he stays, because he feels it is his moral obligation to do so. Hence, he is out of love it leads him to temptation. Babbitt imagines a fairy child (Lewis 5). He uses the fairy child as his escape form reality. He knows he cannot morally cheat on his wife, therefore he imagines a life without her with other women. The first woman he imagines being with is McGoun (describe her from the book). The second woman he imagines being with is Eunice (describe her from the book). The third woman is (look her up). All these women resemble what he wishes his wife could be like, McGoun is a worker, Eunice is young, and the last one is lively, Myra is none of these things. Myra has the social life of being a housewife. She plans dinners, she reads magazine, her children do not pay attention, and her husband does not love her. While George is going through struggle of being faithful, he eventually gives up and cheats on Myra. The social role is his playing is such a burden on him that he cracks under pressure and does not care what people think of his scandalous ways. Federalism is a system in which the power to govern is shared between national and provincial (state) governments, creating what is often called a federation (Wikipedia 1).This style of governance has not been the only structure instituted in American history in order to implement civilized law and order among the people of the land. The decision by a nation of people to implement one of the three main forms of government, confederacy, unitary, or federalism, is an important aspect in defining the nature and role of government in the lives of its citizens. Confederacies exist as a group of autonomous individual states, regions, or member components who form a national body, or centralized government, to represent their independent interests at a more regional and international level. The existence of the national government is derived from the consent of each governed autonomous state or region. The entities that submit to this central ruling authority are able to withdraw from the compact that binds them together. The national authority created is only bestowed with the powers, authority, and privileges which the independent components in the confederacy allow. If any member component feels its interests are no longer being served or the compact has interfered with its autonomy, then that entity of the confederacy can sever its ties with the national body. This can occur because the state, region, or member component has the supreme ultimate authority over its own affairs. As further examination and analysis will demonstrate there is no inherent authority invested into the national government as is the case of a federalist system. The most relevant examples of a ... Adam Smith(1723 1790) and Jean Jacques Rousseau(1712 1770) each provide their own distinctive social thought. Smith, political economist and moral philosopher, is regarded as the father of modern economics. Rousseau, a Franco Swiss social and political philosopher, combines enlightenment and semi romantic themes in his work. Thus Smith s work places emphasis on the relationship between economics and society, whereas, Rousseau focuses his attention on the social inequalities within society. Therefore, Smith and Rousseau, of the Scottish and Continental Enlightenment respectively, provide unique insights on their existing society. Adam Smith is one of the main ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... For Adam Smith, the development of a commercial society produced a social structure divided into three classes, landowners, capitalists, and labourers, the three great constituent orders of every civilized society (Smith, 1998:27). Thus, Smith s ideal society would be of people would work for themselves. He was a strong advocate for free market and posed strong opposition to the feudal system. He, along with other Enilghtenment thinkers, believed that the State had no legitmate role in the free market. Smith s defence of the free market was tied to the belief that state interference with the market benefits the rich and hurts the poor(Lecture Notes, 2001:5). Therefore, Adam Smith s vision of an ideal society was one in which most people are involved in independent commodity production(Lecture Notes, 2001:5). Thus for society to develop and prosper as a whole, its individual members must serve their self interests. Jean Jacques Rousseau s work, in contrast to Smith s, gives attention to the social inequalities within society created by social development. Rousseau believes the social development that the Scottish Enlightenment thinkers advocate, actually create a web of problems that previously did not exist. More specifically, his work concentrates on the articificial social inequalities. Theodor Herzl, the father of political Zionism, states, We are a people one people. Both Herzl and Berkowitz have interesting key points about a Jewish State, the Jewish religion in general, and how to solve current issues in the religion. A State is formed by a social contract and is still being created today. Rousseau states, The conditions of this contract are so precisely defined by the nature of the agreement that the slightest alterations would make them null and void. The consequence is that, even where they are not expressly stated, they are everywhere identical, and everywhere tacitly accepted and... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... This fact proves that all Jews should and will stand together to solve and work out the problems such as poor treatment and portrayal. Herzl emphasizes, It is true that the Jewish State is conceived as a peculiarly modern structure on unspecified territory. But a State is formed, not by pieces of land, but rather by a number of men united under sovereign rule. For example, the portrayal of Jews from a non Zionist is much different from Zionists. It is an egregious and fatal error of the Zionists that they accept the misery of Israel as permanent, his wretchedness as hopeless (Berkowitz 372). Although forming a State or declaring an important religion can be difficult, there are many other risks such as, land disputes, current communities moving to a new land, views of merging with other countries, past and future suffering, and the most important, the emphasis on religion or nation. The first step to becoming a respected religious State is forming a society of Jews to perform scientific and political tasks. Second, Christians and current citizens of the State would be forced to move and find new land, like in times of war or destroyed land. Herzl does point out that if the Jewish State had help from the Christians it would become a peaceable voluntary departure of colonists. The different colors they made represented different things to them, as opposed to today where we just paint our nails for fun. Red, gold, and silver were the main colors used at that time with red representing more powerful people in the higher classes. Beeswax, gum arabic, egg whites, natural dyes and gelatin were the ingredients used to make nail polish before chemicals were introduced. Petals from flowers such as roses gave the polish color. It was an exceptional watch which captured my full attention. The film made me realise there is always a struggle with success. Pop artists imagined themselves confronting a world in which the scale and compass of consumer capitalism, with its near total saturation of society, exceeded traditional perceptual structures (Miller 598). Pop Artmovement took place in various cities but mainly in New York in the sixties and became popular within two or three years. Firstly, the steps leading up to my apartment door are often covered in ice during the colder months because of how the roof pours water onto them. It was mentioned only in passing and was likely meant only to carry the conversation on, but I have come back to it many times in my thoughts. The quotation was a warning: Be careful who you pretend to be because you are who you pretend to be . The truth behind this sentiment is far more pertinent to our lives than we might like to think. We all have visions of who we are based on what we know, how we compare ourselves to others, and how we attempt to act, but the actuality of who we are exists independently of that personal ideal. The truth of the matter is that, regardless of our apparent individuality, the way we act around others, how we dress and talk, and our general... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... The assimilation of those traits into our personality may be little more than a result of repetition, but they become a basis upon which our identity might change or, more consequentially, be judged. This idea of the formulation of identity is not unfounded, and, although not overtly present in literature, can be witnessed in certain characters just as in the real world. In order to keep this essay at least somewhat on topic with the class, I would like to relate this idea to at least some works which we have read. To observe such formulations of identity in literature, it is usually unwise to look at the main character. Although that is the main place to find character development, it wouldn t be a good novel if the character were to constantly change his ideas and behaviors. The first character who I believe shows just how this idea of identity holds true is the ever despised Arthur Chillingworth. The very nature of his character is action. Though he is not a character who we see as active physically in obtaining his goals, without his drive for revenge on Hester and Dimmesdale he would not be noteworthy at all. DISCUSSION The first place to start on overall success of the experimentation would be the IR and melting point values. If the IR and melting point reveal to match exactly with literature values, the whole of experimentation can be deemed successful. Unfortunately, the reality is not as simple, for even a slight impure peak or skewness in melting point shows flaw in the sample product. Benzaldehyde was the first chemical in question. For this lab example, pure benzaldehyde was provided. For exemplary purposes, the IR of benzaldehyde was taken to track the peak alterations that could occur in later steps. The melting point provides further evidence of the purity of the benzaldehyde, but purity was assumed and therefore melting point was not taken. Benzaldehyde is a simple aromatic compound with a aldehyde group; therefore, expected peaks are the aromatic ring constituents, C=O bond representative of aldehydes, and C H bonds representative of aldehydes. According to the expected literature values in place for this functional groups, benzaldehyde was sufficiently pure, containing all the correct values. With the correct IR spectrograph available, all following IR samplings follow stepwise in junction with the first. Further skewness can thus be considered flaw in procedure and not benzaldehyde. This is a story about a girl who was different, ordinary, special you could say, compared to her classmates. She had just moved from Minnesota to Mica, Arizona. Her fellow classmates thought she was weird and goofy because she didn t do or looked like them. The students started making up stuff about her and being mean to her and only two ended up being her only true friends. The story took setting mostly at the high school. Stargirl was a junior most of the story. There were other places Stargirl and Leo had gone to like Archie s house, and Stargirls enchanted place. The story is taken place in the past in almost the whole story. You actually don t know the story is being told and not telled until around the end of the book. After fifteen years a lot has changed. Kevin stayed in Mica, Arizona as an insurance salesman and I became a set designer. The school has a new club called the Sunflowers, the marching band has a ukulele, there is a crowd that always cheers if the other school makes a basket. There is a school where Stargirl s enchanted place was and Archie s house does not look the same. However, reports show that the conditions of the ground as well as the barbed wire and more made it very unlikely for an organized game of soccer to take place. There is no evidence from unit war diaries and regimental histories that the soccer games have taken place. This is a significant historical inaccuracy because the soccer scene was a major scene that showed how close the soldiers were able to get. This largely impacts the movie because like the other evidence mentioned earlier, the audience will not be able to comprehend the motions of the soldiers if this scene were to be removed. This scene was important because it emphasized the war relationship and defined how every soldier was just a regular human who is forced to fight. Furthermore, the movie shows the trenches looking not in bad terms. The movie showed soldiers being fairly clean and comfortable. The soldiers were seen fairly clean and were not suffering any diseases. The God Delusion By Richard Dawkins In his book The God Delusion (2006), British evolutionary biologist, Richard Dawkins asserts that if the entire evidence in the world favored creationism, he would immediately recognize and shift his stance on the issue. However, he also notes that as of now, the immense amount of accessible evidence supports the theory of evolution. Dawkins establishes his stance on the creation of the universe based on the side that has provides the most evidence. In The Great Gatsby dissatisfaction is associated with lack of fulfillment in Dreams. In Benjamin Button dissatisfaction is surrounded by Benjamin s curious case of aging in reverse. Through these two pieces of writing by Fitzgerald there are a lot of unhappy relationships. With bad relationships come trends such as abusive traits from typically one party, whether it be emotionally or physically. In The Great Gatsby Tom Buchanan is a cruel man who is dominant and aggressive with a strong physique. With these attributes he is a prime candidate for an abusive lover. The abyss he is facing, the illogical process of love, is made even more horrible by the shattering of the rules of propriety, he, so necessarily, adhered. Anna sees in him emotionless conventionality and she points in him the same faults Emma addresses to Charles, he understands nothing, he feels nothing, a ministerial machine lacking of imagination and passion. And indeed the distance between him and Charles is never great, Tolstoy, through Anna s hatred, tries to make of him a caricature of a man as Flaubert did with Charles. The cartilage of his ears, his weary eyes, slow voice, flat feet, the way he swings his pelvis, the blue veins on his white hands, the cracking of his knuckles, all these details recall very closely the stamp Emma abhors in Charles. All the same, Tolstoy s characters are never wholly evil or wholly good. They are real. Karenin is an hypocrite who mirrors the morality Anna has offended: when on the carriage back home she first confesses to love someone else, Tolstoy has her conceding: No, you are not mistaken, she said slowly, looking desperately at his cold face and between her desperation and his indifference passes all the difference between the epic she represents and the etiquette he embodies. In Bautista s work Still Life with Grapes, Flowers, and Shells, 1628 reflects the new delights that the new world had to offer . The arrangement of shells and exotic birds and flowers, is a combination of old and new: with a traditional style of painting depicting exciting and unexplored goods. This could possibly be a metaphor for the rather old and powerful Spanish empire, exploring into the unknown. The subtle uses of bright bold colours of peach and chartreuse, as well as warm earth tones are a clear reflection of the South American tropics, along with their exotic flora and fauna, and humid climate. The lusciousness of the brush strokes and use of highlights give the painting a new life, in the both things harsh like the foliage of the plants and soft like plumage of the birds. • 52. Argumentative Essay On Self Reliance Everyone in life has at least one person who has strongly influenced them in one way or another, but what if that influence ended up being hurtful? In the essay Self Reliance by Ralph Emerson, Emerson gives his advice on how to live independently. Emerson says self reliance is to trust oneself and believe in oneself. He states that this is important because being self reliant leads to a successful path in life. By having individual ideas one will end up doing something she or he wants to do in life which causes success for that individual. He discusses how the only person one needs to listen to in life is oneself and that no other person should influence one s life. I believe there are people in this world that can have a negative influence on one s life, but also people that can have a positive influence. For example, in basketballmy positive influences (parents, teammates, and coaches) help me to succeed in a team sport. Emerson begins his article by talking about the importance of self reliance. He defines self reliance as thinking for oneself and not letting anyone else influence one in any way, shape, or form. As a human being this may be one of the most difficult tasks. Emerson explains that being self reliant can be difficult especially for adults because they are too worried about their reputations and how others will look upon them. Emerson also says, Trust thyself (2). Emerson believes that one should go with his or her gut in everything she or he does. Even if what she or he wants to do goes against the thoughts of others she or he still needs to pursue his or her dreams. The last thing Emerson wants people to do is be embarrassed of what others will think of themselves. People need to throw away others thoughts and opinions and follow one s own.
