Cross- Cultural Communication
We didn t all come over on the same ship, but we re all in the same boat. Bernard Baruch
Cross cultural communication is the process of exchanging meaningful and unambiguous
information across cultural boundaries, in a way that preserves mutual respect and minimizes
antagonism, that is, it looks at how people from differing cultural backgrounds endeavour to
communicate. The study of cross cultural communication was originally found within businesses
and the government both seeking to expand globally. Communication is interactive, so an important
influence on its effectiveness is our relationship with others. All communication is cultural it draws

good/bad, right/wrong) which can only be nurtured through both cross cultural knowledge and
awareness. Cross Cultural Competence is and should be the aim of all those dealing with
multicultural clients, customers or colleagues. Competence is the final stage of cross cultural
understanding and signifies the actor s ability to work effectively across cultures. Cross cultural
competency is beyond knowledge, awareness and sensitivity in that it is the digestion, integration
and transformation of all the skills and information acquired through them, applied to create cultural
synergy within the workplace.
Following are the five cross cultural communication needs that will allow for improved lines of
communication, better cross cultural awareness and more successful cross cultural relationships
Cross Cultural Communication needs .Listening Skills
Although emphasis usually lies on being a competent speaker, listening is a key skill that many
business personnel do not exercise enough. For cross cultural communication, attentive listening is
critical to be able to understand meanings, read between the lines and enable to empathize with the
speaker.
Cross Cultural Communication needs. Speaking Skills
Listening and speaking must work in tandem for effective cross cultural communication. Speaking

Research Paper- Negative Effects on Children by Watching Tv
We do not believe there is anything sexist or violent about the World Wrestling Federation. I think
it s unfair of you to insinuate it when there are so many shows and so many different movies, and
so many different social problems that really do contribute to violence in this country.
UPN president Dean Valentine in 1999 after a 7 year old child in Dallas killed his little brother
with a clothesline maneuver he had seen on a wrestling show.
One fact should not be in dispute: TV is violent! Guns, shootings, murders, hitting, punching,
slapping, screaming, kicking, stabbing, explosions, car chases, car smashes, disasters and death are
shown daily throughout TV programming. Most violence is not even in nightly news programs and

3. TV is a World of Good and Bad
Even though both criminals and cops can both commit justifiable violence television is still a simple
medium. TV presents good guys and bad guys. On average, there are 15 minutes of commercials
for every one hour of TV programming, so producers only have a short amount of time in which to
establish plot, story, characters and resolution. Good characters and bad characters must be quickly
and simply established.
Deeper, more realistic, more ambiguous characterizations make it hard for viewers to know who
to root for. It also requires more screen time that takes away from on screen action, states the
Center for Media Literacy. As a result, TV and film criminals are reduced to caricatures. They are
l00% bad. No one could care about them. They have no families. Many of them don t even have
full names, only nick names. They deserve no sympathy and they get what they deserve.
The bad guys, whether they are cops or robbers, have to be 100% bad to justify the violence
against them. Television violence is the struggle of good versus evil. It s OK to shoot the bad guy
after all, he s the bad guy.
According to the study by the Center for Media and Public Affairs, the most violent show
observed in 1999 was CBS Walker, Texas Ranger. This show took the top spot for overall violence
with a rate of 112 acts per show, over two thirds of them (82) serious. Almost every episode of this
long running Chuck Norris cop show includes

Billie Holiday, whose real name is Eleanora Gough, was born in Philadelphia Pennsylvania in

Narrative Essay On My Antonia
Jim learns more about their friendship as they did everything together including looking at the
animals, the river, hunting grounds, helping Antonia learn english and by their adventures. I feel
like they have always been really good friends, from the time they met, and I feel like Jim had a
crush on Antonia since he met her.
MUCH as I liked Antonia, I hated a superior tone that she sometimes took with me. She was four
years older than I, to be sure, and had seen more of the world; but I was a boy and she was a girl,
and I resented her protecting manner. Before the autumn was over she began to treat me like an
equal and to defer to me in other things that reading lessons. This change came about from an
adventure we had together. After a couple of lessons and hanging out with each other she did
think of Jim as an equal person like all her other friends. They took an adventure up by the prairie
dogs and something crazy happened. They saw a snake and Jim killed it. Antonia found out that

Mariama Ba And Sindiwe Magona
1. Introduction
The critical analysis of gender probabilities in the African context is not a new venture but a
significant discussion to the development of gender, cultural and feminist theorists. This study
investigates the limitations to empowerment Africa women face at the hands of patriarchal
societies, exacerbated by the oppression and subjugation employed by traditional, cultural and
religious norms within two different African countries, that is, Senegal and South Africa. The
research analyzes two novels by important women writers in African literature, Mariama Ba and
Sindiwe Magona. These two dedicated women writers examine the different ways in which
African patriarchy and religion broadly manifests itself regarding the position of women.
Mariama Ba`s novel So Long A Letter (1981) expresses the Islamic and African laws which core
existed in Senegal. As Layiwola (1998: 153) state, So Long a Letter narrates, in a personal
correspondence to another friend, the woes of a ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
As a result, patriarchal perspectives combined with women`s economical dependence on men, make
reaching self actualization a terrifying or challenging experience and if not impossible for most
women. Thus, there is need for an understanding of the experiences that these women undergo in
order to implement useful and effective interventions, which are culture sensitive. Mariama Ba`s
novel So Long A Letter sheds light to the need of African societies to be enabling for women who
suffer at the hands patriarchy, tradition and religion which oppresses and exacerbates gender
stereotypes towards them. However, some African societies as an acknowledgement of Mariama
Ba`s style of writing and thematic concerns are still practicing religious and traditional norms that

10 Business Snapshot 1.1 Hedge Funds
CHAPTER 1
Hedge funds have become major users of derivatives for hedging, speculation, and arbitrage. A
hedge fund is similar to a mutual fund in that it invests funds on behalf of clients. However, unlike
mutual funds hedge funds are not required to register under U.S. federal securities law. This is
because they accept funds only from В®nancially sophisticated individuals and do not publicly
oВЂer their securities. Mutual funds are subject to regulations requiring that shares in the funds be
fairly priced, that the shares be redeemable at any time, that investment policies be disclosed, that
the use of leverage be limited, that no short positions be taken, and so on. Hedge funds are relatively

Note that a company might do better if it chooses not to hedge than if it chooses to hedge.
Alternatively, it might do worse. Consider ImportCo. If the exchange rate is 1.7000 on October 14
and the company has not hedged, the ВЈ10 million that it has to pay will cost $17,000,000, which is
less than $18,405,000. On the other hand, if the exchange rate is 1.9000, the ВЈ10 million will cost
$19,000,000Гђand the company will wish it had hedged! The position of ExportCo if it does not
hedge is the reverse. If the exchange rate in September proves to be less than 1.8400, the
company will wish it had hedged; if the rate is greater than 1.8400, it will be pleased it has not
done so. This example illustrates a key aspect of hedging. Hedging reduces the risk, but it is not
necessarily the case that the outcome with hedging will be better than the outcome without hedging.
Hedging Using Options
Options can also be used for hedging. Example 1.2 considers an investor who in May of a
particular year owns 1,000 Microsoft shares. The share price is $28 per share. The Example 1.2
Hedging with options It is May. An investor who owns 1,000 Microsoft shares wants protection
against a possible decline in the share price over the next two months. Market quotes are as
follows: Current Microsoft share price: $28 Microsoft July 27.50 put price: $1 The investor buys
10 put option contracts for a total cost of $1,000. This gives the investor the right to sell 1,000

The Alaska Lng Project, A Pipeline
I am writing to you in response to the proposed Alaska LNG project, a pipeline that stretches from
the North Slope to the small community of Nikiski, Alaska, that you are currently supporting as
chairman of the Senate Energy and Natural resources committee (Alex Martinson, 2015). Please
realize that I am not an expert in this matter but simply a concerned citizen who would regret to
know that negative environmental and community effects would result from the construction of
facilities associated with a natural gas pipeline and production.
Allow me to start by saying that this state and the Kenai Peninsula community, are very important
to me. I have lived in Nikiski, Alaska for the past 11 years, and I would sincerely hate to see this
community and state polluted by large scale LNG production and transportation if it could be
avoided. I also realize the positive economic outcome for the state of Alaska as well as the U.S. as a
whole. However, do these fiscal gains constitute enough incentive to potentially disrupt natural
environments and put Alaska s citizens at risk?
Consider the Trans Alaska Pipeline and crude oil transportation that is currently in place from the
North Slope to the Valdez Marine Terminal. Many oil spills have occurred since it began
transportation in 1977 such as the one that occurred in 2006 that went undetected for days resulting
in 267,000 gallons of crude oil escaping into the environment (Barringer, 2006). Also, in 1989, the

EL 120: English Phonetics and Linguistics
Question 1:
Vowels and Consonants are two special qualities of sounds, which are present in every languages
of world (Ladefoged, 2001). If one needs to speak English with proper pronunciation so one needs
to learn phonetics.
Letters and sounds also have a very thin line between them, where Letters are in writing and
sounds can be spoken. These functions should not be confused. When we write the letters are used
to express sounds. There are words that sound similar but are written differently for example Sent,
Scent and Cent or Bare and Bear. People get confused while speaking and writing a word and
isolating the phonemes in similar words. Therefore, in solution people should listen to sound only
rather concentrating on letters. ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Consonants are prepared by an exact intervention with airstream by organs that are vocal. This is
the reason they are easily described than vowels. In contrast, vowels are produced without any
interference of airstream. The air stream flows through the nose or the mouth relatively without
hindrance. The difference in the sound of vowels is produce by different arrangement of lips
and tongue. The example of vowels is a, e, i, o and u . Consonants in phonetics are called as
contoids which appears as the insignificant part in syllable. Where vowels are called as vocoids in

The Fall Of Napoleon And The French Revolution
After the Seven Years War and the American Revolutionary War, France was deeply in debt. Due
to unwanted taxation and suffering many years of bad harvest, the French Revolution erupted in
1789. By 1799, the government of France was on the verge of collapse. It was then that the
brilliant, young French General Napoleon Bonaparte, having already won fame with a series of
victories for revolutionary Francein Italy, began hearing of the chaos France while busy fighting a
fruitless war in Egypt. Napoleon decided to march his army back to France and he overthrew the
French government in an army coup. After securing power, he replaced it with a new form of
government, the Consulate. Napoleon self declared himself as the first Consul.

The Pay Gap Between Men And Women
The pay gap between men and women has become quite a topic today. The difference in pay are
very common now in many career paths where men and women are doing the same work
amount. It is rare to think that when men and women are performing the same task and are just
as qualified as each other that they would get paid the same. As the wage gap is being discussed
more, the question is why do men and women have different wages when they are working the
same job. While it seems that men don t have to take as much time off from work or may work
more, we have to look at it from Women s viewpoints also. Women and Men should be paid
equally for the work that they perform. However, if a Manis working a in a factory or any other job
that has them constantly lifting things and a womanworks there and they can t do the same as the
man can then, the man should receive more pay. Women and Men should have the same pay unless
they are not performing the same task.
In his article Gender pay gap widens despite AfC , The nursing standard talks about the reasons why
men get paid more in nursing than women. Nursing Standard states that women are more likely to
take career breaks and work part time than men (Nursing Standard 1).
Women get paid less because they are more likely to work part time and take career breaks than
men are. How is this fair to women that have to work for a living and already have their careers
and do not plan on taking a break. This pre judged pay wage for

Liberal Art Issues
Transfer and Liberal Art Issues Liberal arts provide contexts for understanding rather than the
knowledge that some bit of esoterica is true or false; if the definition of education depended on
knowledge of certain data, facts, or the modes of discourse in any academic discipline, then no
one prior to the nineteenth century was liberally educated because the concept of the academic
discipline did not exist (Cohen, Brawer Krisker, 2014, pg. 267). One can benefit a lot from liberal
artseducation; and also learn and develop the abilities and skills that are required for a lifetime

This is the reason why liberal arts education has been incorporated in the curriculum that is being
taught in school over the years. When students have mastered all the skills and abilities that they
need to know to help them in today s modern society. They need to know how to use those skills
for effective critical thinking and they also have to know that for one to solve a problem
effectively, it requires strong analytical and creative processes, which can be develop through
liberal arts education. When students plan to continue their education, the best thing for them to
do, especially if they are not college ready, is to start out at a community college. Community
college has a lot to offer for instance, they have smaller interactive classrooms with well qualified
professors who will teach their students how to challenge their minds and promote further
development before they transition into a four year university, where courses are a little more
challenging and students have to learn how to be more independent. One challenge is aligning
trends with course credits; free course and massive open online courses, as well as prior learning
experience, are all relatively new approaches to education that educators and policymakers have to
address when discussing college credits and transferring credit, according to the AACC brief (States

One of the primary public services for the unemployed is income support supplied by Centrelink
through the Department of Human Services (Department of Human Services, 2014). It is a form
of social and fiscal welfare, a system that exists in principle to guarantee the minimum standard of
living for all legally residing citizens. These services can be provided by charities and private
organisations, but typically, and in the case of NewStart Allowance, it is a program supplied and
regulated by the government. NewStart Allowance is a financial assistance scheme for those over
22 years of age and Youth Allowance is an equivalent program for those between 16 21. NewStart
was initiated as an assistance program for those who are unemployed and unable to support
themselves by providing a minimum standard of living (National Commission of Audit, 2014) with
the intention of creating an incentive to seek work. Applications for NewStart allowance are
submitted electronically online, and all payments are made electronically directly to the recipient s
nominated bank account. As a system, this requires unemployed individuals to engage with various
other sectors, including the finance industry. John Burges and William Mitchell state that
unemployment trend has acted as a social exclusion perpetrated against particular sections of the
community, in general the young, old, poor and uneducated (1998). The issue then lays in the trade

Lord Of The Flies Critical Analysis
The novel, Lord of the Flies, was written by William Golding in 1954. The novel tells the story of
what a horrible and disturbing world looks like when things go wrong. Sigmund Freud was a
psychologist that studied how humans minds work and our controlled by basic impulses in the
unconscious brain called the Id, Superego, and the Ego(CommonLit Staff). In the book, Jack
represents the Id, Ralph represents Ego, and Piggy is the Superego. The most basic and oldest
brain part is the Id. Freud believed that the Id was the location of our pleasure principle. This is
the area that tells us to seek instant gratification from the things we do (CommonLit Staff). It
doesn t know things like right or wrong and justs acts like an animal doing whatever it wants and
whenever it wants. The boy named Jack is the Id part of the brain. One example is when Jack
decides to leave his job doing the fire to go hunting with the hunting party. Jack, obsessed with
the idea of killing a pig, camouflages his face with clay and charcoal and enters the jungle to
hunt, accompanied by several other boys. On the beach, Ralph and Piggy see a ship on the
horizon but they also see that the signal fire has gone out (Chapter 4). The Jack Id wants to go
and have fun hunting on not be bored with the job of the fire. He acts impulsive and doesn t do
what is right. Second example is when Jack has had too much of Ralph and takes over the group.

Analysis Of Nathaniel Hawthorne s The Scarlet Letter
Jalon Ellison
English 10

A Sinner Defined by The Scarlet Letter
Society has not changed as far as labeling people and probably never will. In the Puritan society
they branded, tortured, and defined human beings the way they saw them even though they did not
know how the person they were humiliating truly was. Hester Prynne is a good example of this in
the novel The Scarlet Letter written by the author Nathaniel Hawthorne. Hawthorne is using the
character Hester in this novel to show how society can truly label people. People can be defined
by the biggest thing in their life and in this case the letter A has brought a whole new meaning to
Hester s life and has defined her apart from others in the community in a way she never thought.
The Puritan society never focuses on Hester, how she acts, who she talks to, or even what she
wears until she commits a sin. After the whole community knows of her sin then they know her as
the adulterer, the sinner, the one who should be punished but what they do not know is what kind
of a person she really is. Hester Prynne is kind, smart, and a beautiful woman who is trying to do
her best in life in the new world considering her husband left her and did not return until she is
brought upon the scaffold in front of the town for humiliation. The Puritan community is
continuously going by their rules and guidelines and not caring to look for the whole truth but just
enough truth to harm those who have done

Everett And Odysseus Comparison Essay
Everett vs. Odysseus
A character named Ulysses Everett McGill from the story O Brother Where Art Thou is a leader
of a chain gang in rural Mississippi. Everett connects with a character named Odysseus from the
story The Odyssey because they share many similar attributes. Odysseus demonstrates god like
qualities and he is shown to be a brave man. In the stories, the Odyssey and O Brother Where Art
Thou through many trials and tribulations both characters Odysseus and Everett share similar
characteristics such as they are both loving, perfect, and determined.
Everett and Odysseus are both loving towards their wives, they both love their wives and want the
best for them. Odysseus demonstrates love when he cried to see his wife Penelope, and Everett ...

His greatest problem was when he came upon the sirens. The sirens got the men s drunk and
they fell asleep. Therefore Pete was turned in by the sirens and they were forced to leave with
the frog they thought was Pete. This shows that Everett was determined to keep going and he
did not stop. As a result, they ascertained the frog was not Pete. Everett and Odysseus were both
determined towards their own goals and did not give up. Only instruct me goddess if you will how
if possible can I pass Charybdis or fight off Scylla when she raids my crew? (XII 72 74). For
example, Odysseus knew this wasn t a good idea because the lovely goddess told him there will
be hardships. Even then, Odysseus did not give up and he kept going. Odysseus and Everett were
brave enough to face obstacles and find their way out.
Odysseus and Everett share many similarities throughout their journeys and overcome many
obstacles and didn t quit no matter what. They show that it s definitely hard to overcome problems
and determination is also needed but it s not impossible. The characters demonstrate their

Escher s Art Analysis
Continuing with my self promotion pieces to get PalbergWERX Design + Photography noticed in
this over stimulated communications age, I began work on my second famous artistic image in
history. You can read Part 1 in this series HERE.

This time I choose M.C. Escher s work Humanity . Again, there have been numerous imitations and
this ribbon type illustration is well known to the general public.
This is a much more challenging project as the illustration is very precise in how it is able to
convey the front features of both characters as well as make a believable ribbon that shows both
the volume and shape of both heads.
As I mentioned, it was important that the work was now in the creative commons, even if I was
not going to use the original work in my promo piece itself. Below is the image that I achieved in
my first try at this. In hindsight, I had a few issues that I didn t fix, but will highlight during this
article.

The first step is finding a suitable photo in my case, I wanted two images of myself but, not
mirrored and somewhat posed like the original Escher heads.

look right. When I placed the Palberg above the WERX I knew I was then going in the right
direction. For the most in control I created a unique layer for each letter and then just moved them

The Gift of the Magi Argument Paper
The Gift of the Magi Argumentative Research Paper: Did Jim and Della perform an act of Selfless
Love?
Abstract
The story was written by O Henry in 1906. The story was centered around a seemingly poor couple
who did not have enough money to buy each other the gifts that their significant other deserved.
The story took place during Christmas. The Gift of the Magi is like a classic wisdom story in the
bible. O Henrys choice of title depicts symbolism between the three magi that brought gold,
frankincense, and mur, to the baby Jesus and the gifts that Jim and Della had given to each other
which mainly consisted of selfless love, Della s hair and Jims pocket watch. This itself ties into the
theme of his story. These gifts all entail the act... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
This leads to her idea of selling her most prized possession: her hair, to get Jim his present.
Meanwhile, Jim decides to sell his most prized possession which was a pocket watch that was
passed down from his grandfather to his father and then to him. He sells that watch and buys Della
a set of beautiful tortoise shell combs for her hair. Thus leading to the use of situational irony in
which they both receive gifts for something they gave up in order to give the other a gift.
Jim and Della perform an act of selfless love by their willingness to give something that held
great value to them in order to get special presents for each other on Christmas. They do all of
this out of love for the other. However, you will see that these gives prove to end up having no
use in the end but that is not the main point. The main point is that although this ironic situation
occurs, they both find joy in the thought that they would do this for each other. This love that
they have for each other is far greater value than any gift that could be given. Jim doesn t
overreact or get angry with this conclusion. Rather, he tells Stella, Let s put our Christmas Present
away and keep em a while. They re too nice to use just at present. Although they no longer had use
for their gifts the mere fact that they would such a selfless act of love was more rewarding than
any other gift. This in itself is wise. Another point to stress in that this willingness to be

There are many areas and factors to how Russia developed into an Enlightened Absolute and

wider picture; how the Romanovs established authority, what was the significant changes in the
Russian society, how did the economy develop, what was the ideology of the people and was

Themes In For Whom The Bells Tolls
We all are put to the test by having to make sacrifices like a life or death situation. Although the
majority of those choices may be for the greater good, some can hurt others. We are put to the
task, and we have several obstacles in our way, and it is our duty to accomplish that task. In
Ernest Hemingway s For Whom the Bells Tolls, the character of Robert Jordan risks his life to
fight fascism to do his duty, take care of Maria and to wash away his father suicide.
To begin with, Robert Jordan takes care of the woman he loves, Maria. Ever since Robert Jordan
went with the reclusive group in the mountain, the two of them had empathy of love towards each
other. Robert Jordan tries to reject the adulation they have for each other because he thinks that
after the bridge is blown, they will not see each other anymore. Maria refuses to think that and
shows all her love towards him. Soon Robert Jordan seems to care more about Maria and uses
their passion for each other as a distraction from the war. Hewson states that Jordan comes to
realize that he and Maria are making an alliance against death through their love for each other (6).
Their love for each other designates them forget about everything, and all they want to do is be
together. The alliance against death that they have is significant in the story. Being together
assembles them to feel powerful and gives them both hope and strength during their hard times
there. This helps out both of these characters in their own

The Republic
The subject matter of the Republic is the nature of justice and its relation to human existence. Book
I of the republic contains a critical examination of the nature and virtue of justice. Socrates engages
in a dialectic with Thrasymachus, Polemarchus, and Cephalus, a method which leads to the asking
and answering of questions which directs to a logical refutation and thus leading to a convincing
argument of the true nature of justice. And that is the main function of Book I, to clear the ground
of mistaken or inadequate accounts of justice in order to make room for the new theory. Socrates
attempts to show that certain beliefs and attitudes of justice and its nature are inadequate or
inconsistent, and present a way in which those... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...

br Cephalus argues that finding old age as a good thing will depend on whether you have the
disposition of those who have order and peace with themselves . And he identifies this
disposition with the inclination not to tell lies or deceive and the willingness to fulfill
obligations to gods and men. He believes that a life which manifests these disposition is the life
of a just person, of a person conscious of having lived free from injustice . It is unclear whether
Cephalus takes it that being conscious of having lived free from injustices is simply that one has
not cheated or told lies and having fulfilled the obligations to gods and man. Because of the
living of a just life is merely to follow these guidelines then it is not implied if these virtues are
attributed to a specific personality, or of an orderly and peaceful character. If his argument is not
correctly linked then there is no reason to correlate living justly with the possession of a certain
character; the just character. It could turn out that the benefits of just conduct are the possession of
a particular sort of character.

br Socrates remarks that telling the truth and returning what is borrowed cannot be the definition of
justice (as outlined by Cephalus), he claims that instances of the types of action Cephalus thinks of
as just, can in different circumstances be identified as cases of unjust. Socrates launches into a
description of the act of giving a borrowed

The Differences in Attitudes of Billy and Geoffrey in...
The Differences in Attitudes of Billy and Geoffrey in Billy Liar by Keith Waterhouse
Billy Liar was originally a novel written by Keith Waterhouse. In the late fifties/early sixties,
Waterhouse collaborated with Willis Hall to turn the novel into a play. It is about a boy called
Billy Fisher, his life, relationships, attitudes and lies. The story takes place on one Saturday in the
Fisher household.
During the late 1950 s, teenagers were gaining more responsibility. For the first time, it was them
who had to support the family as many adults were killed during the war. As they had jobs,
teenagers had their own money to spend. This created businesses aimed at teenagers.

Also, for the first time, the younger generation could speak their mind. They no longer had to keep
quiet at the fear of being punished. This created more arguments within families. When children
were told off before, they would keep quiet and accept their punishment, but now, they were arguing
back. This made the parents jobs more difficult and was seen as rude, disrespectful and
unacceptable.
All of this is incorporated into Billy Liar in a way that is understandable, especially to teenagers
of the time. It was one of the first plays that young people could relate to and feel part of. This
play is known as a kitchen sink drama as it is set in one family home and reflects what was
happening in families and societies at the time it was written.
The two main characters are Billy and Geoffrey. Billy is a nineteen year old boy, son of
Geoffrey and Alice Fisher, who wants freedom. He is sarcastic, rude and unappreciative: I gather
that he who should burn the raincoat is father and he who should get dressed of a morning is my
good self. Why do you always address all your remarks to the sideboard, Grandmother? (Act1,
lines 117 120) He has no respect for anything and he doesn t seem to care about anything. Billy
uses lies to make himself sound interesting and to get out of trouble. He is dirty and slightly built .

Paget s Disease Of Bone
Paget s disease of bone (PDB), also known as osteitis deformans, is named after Sir James Paget,
an English surgeon, who first described the disease in 1877. Since then, research has determined
that 15% to 40% of cases are inherited and the balance is thought to be caused by exposure to a
slow viruses like human respiratory syncytial virus or canine distemper virus, however, symptoms
may not appear for many years afterward. In about half of cases that are hereditary, a mutated gene
has been isolated that is known to cause osteoclasts to become rogue and un regulated. PDB causes
long bones to grow unnaturally long causing pain and osteoarthritis, hearing loss and nervous

Then, characteristic x ray signatures and elevated total alkaline phos phatase (ALP) levels
confirm the disease and bone scans and individual bone x rays determine the extent of damaged
areas. However, total ALP levels remain within reference levels as long as the disease is
monostotic, that is, involving a single bone. Total ALP is not a marker until remodeling has
gone far astray in several bones that are grossly misshapen. And, because it is widely recognized
that prevalence and severity of PDB is decreasing in the world population, total ALP levels
remain within reference ranges far longer, making anecdotal discovery rare. Although there is
no cure for PDB, early detection is vital for commencement of diet, exercise, and drug regimens
that significantly mitigate debilitating symptoms and disease progression. Per Magnusson,
Michael Davie and Christopher Sharp compared total ALP and three isoforms of ALP (B/I, B1,
B2) of 37 patients with various stages of PDB and a control group of 66 healthy patients. Their
findings revealed that the B2 isoform of ALP is increased in asymptomatic PDB patients with a
validity of 80% on a characteristic comparison curve of true postive to false positive ratios. High
bone B2 isoform ALP levels may be of use in early discovery, however, only total ALP levels are

for the п¬Ѓeld of social and environmental accounting. With a new publisher Elsevier it is our hope
that we shall reach new markets and opportunities. In recent issues, these explorations have been
extended to theorising the role of accounting in transnational global processes, and to the channels

A cross sectional analysis indicates that the share price response is mainly a function of the relative
п¬Ѓne imposed on the п¬Ѓrm; other explanatory variables such as environmental performance
news or sector membership were unsuccessful in explaining variations in the market responses they
observed. Equally, Accounting Forum has been interested in the interdependencies between social
and environmental accounting which extend to the nexus between accounting and information to
employees and other relevant parties. In this issue of Accounting Forum, R. G. Day presents
evidence concerning the evolution of reporting about employees in the last century and its
relationship with mandatory disclosure rules (Day, 2004). This is an interesting phenomenon, given
that the current conceptual framework for corporate environmental reporting has only recently
begun to analyse the relationship between voluntary and regulated disclosure. For example,
accounting research is only just beginning to examine the relationships between the role that
International Standards such as ISO 14001 have had on the reporting function. In Day s article,
however, he focuses on evidence from the UK and п¬Ѓnds that there is an apparent disregard for
statutory disclosures. Implicit in much of the Corporate Environmental and Social Reporting (CE

Observation Of Teaching A Teacher s Classroom
I have a good friend, Courtney, who is doing her student teaching in a fourth grade classroom at
Faubion elementary school, and she arranged for me to come in to observe her cooperating
teacher s classroom. On Friday, December 1st at 10 o clock I had the opportunity to observe Mrs.
Makara s classroom for 45 minutes while the class was doing readingstations. The class is
organized into six table groups with five students in each group. Mrs. Makara s overhead screen
hangs in the front of the room near her table. I noticed that the class was arranged this way in
order for all the students to all easily see the screen as well as collaborate with one another for
the assignments and projects that are assigned in class. When I came into the classroom Mrs.
Makara was finishing up teaching a math lesson. She was using a document camera to project the
worksheet that students had in front of them on screen. She was also using a microphone while
talking to the class. Courtney later informed me that was because one of their students has a
hearing impairment so both Courtney and Mrs. Makara use the microphone when speaking to the
class. Mrs. Makara assigned a couple of math problems for the students to work with their table
groups to figure out. After each group figured out the answer to the problem Mrs. Makara asked
for one volunteer to come up and project their work on the overhead projector. The student showed
her work and talked through how her group figured out the solution. Afterward, Mrs. Makara asked
all the students to put away their math work and get ready for readingstations.
While the students were working to put away their math work Mrs. Makara used her computer to
pull up a slide showing the different reading stations. When I asked my friend about how the
students were split into groups she informed me that they split them up based on their reading
levels because in their class the reading levels are at a wide spectrum. There are some students
who are reading at a sixth grade level and others that are reading at a K 1 level. Therefore, the only
way they could differentiate reading instruction was by splitting the students into groups based on
their reading levels and having them go to the stations that

A Textbook Example Of What s Wrong Summary
Paulo Freire starts out referring to the Fundamentally narrative character (Freire 1) of education.
Loewen starts introduction with high school students hate history (Loewen, 1). At first blush, one
wouldn t think the two had much in common. Perhaps, they don t have that much in common, but
they do have a common complaint. They both have a dislike for what Freire calls the Banking
method of education. Freire defines it as the teacher s task to fill the students with the contents of
his narration (Freire, 2). Freire might have been a wild eyed radical, but he was more or less on
point with his narration complaint. Loewen similarly has issues with the manner in which History

There are, literally, volumes written just about the politics of textbooks. The true depth of the chaos
is too much to go into here. Loewen only scratches the surface when he describes the boondoggle
that is the school textbook in his introduction. In an article titled A Textbook Example of What s
Wrong with Education, Tamim Ansary takes it a step further. He describes in detail what
Loewen only lightly touched on. It s real inside baseball type stuff, or probably more accurately
described as how the sausage is made. He describes the biggest issue as ensuring that the books
are necessarily bland to ensure that they will offend no one on the left or right. There are
activists groups on both sides of the political spectrum that do little more than dig through
proposed textbooks looking for things to find objectionable (Ansary). Of course, one mustn t
forget the fact that money is always a factor. Texas, a big fish where textbooks are concerned,
spends approx. $42 billion on public schools and there is a specific amount allocated in adoption
years for just textbooks (Ansary). Too much truth can get in the way of business. It s not about the
most accurate or the most interesting textbooks, but rather about being as inoffensive as possible to
the most people. With a model like that, there isn t any real chance that textbooks will improve any

Thessalonians Thessalonians is based on two different letters that was written to the Christian

The 50th anniversary of the JFK assassination was commemorated on November 22, 2013.
President Lyndon B. Johnson created the Warren Commission to investigate the assassination of
John F. Kennedy. The final report presented by the commission claimed that Lee Harvey Oswald
acted alone in killing the president. (Wikipedia, 2013). This report has proven to be highly
controversial among citizens. There have been many theories as to who killed Kennedy, why they
did it, and from what location. There are some theories that are more prominent than others such
as: The CIA, The Mafia, The anti Castro Cubans, a man from the Secret Service, and Lee Harvey
Oswald. There are other theories believing that Lyndon B. Johnson and UFO specialists may have
been involved. Each one of these theories will be explored throughout this paper.
The CIA Involvement Theory
The CIA s involvement in the killing of JFK is one of the popular theories put forward by

Give examples of being able to maintain legal and good practice requirements when assessing
occupational competence.
C. In carrying out assessment of occupational competence, I would ask myself:
How effective was my assessment and feedback?
Was there anything I didn t anticipate?
How did I deal with it?
What went well?
What could I improve?
If I had to change anything what would I do differently?

This would be a write up on underpinning questions when a range has not quite been met. This
could also be a write up on a hair style that was achieved, explaining how they went about getting
the achieved look.
Insufficient evidence If a learner hands back their assignment but has not met the criteria covered,
they would be told there was insufficient evidence to complete the assignment. They would be
asked to add the required evidence making the assignment achievable.
Recognising prior learning This would be when a learner has completed a unit in another
qualification within the set time of the national standards. I would check their certification for proof
of this and get the learner to take the test of under pinning knowledge so they would not have to do
the same unit again. I would be able to document this in the learners log book with a RPL form,
the form would need to be signed and dated from the achieved date on the certificate.
C. To plan the assessment of occupational competence to address learner needs and current
achievements.
In my assessment plan I would identify any specific need that the learner may have e.g. Dyslexia (I
would check with the relevant department within the training establishment to see what help could
be offered to the learner i.e. extra time given for assignments and written tests). I would then agree

Robert Hayden, The Middle Passage Essay
Robert Hayden was an American poet and educator who also served as a consultant in the
Library of Congress from 1976 1978. He was born and raised in a poor Detroit neighborhood,
Paradise Valley. Growing up was emotionally devastating for Hayden as he spent time living at
home with his parents and eventually moving in with foster parents next door. He was unable to
participate in sports growing up due to impaired vision, so he spent the majority of his time
reading. He went on to graduate high schoolin 1932, attended Detroit City College and later
moved on to the University of Michigan in pursuit of a master s degree. Much of Hayden s poetry
reflects the Harlem Renaissance, pays close attention to social criticism and uses racial and cultural
material to explore the African American presence in American history, while not pointing out
what is singularly black . Hayden s poetry began to gain international recognition when he was
awarded a grand prize for his book... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
It is a past for all implicated parties, a past not to be forgotten, and a lesson for the future.
(Lambert 327) The Middle Passage is often known to be Hayden s masterpiece. The poem talks
about slave ships packed with human cargo traveling from African plantations to America. The
poem describes the suffering of the captives and gives various viewpoints from the slave traders
themselves. An excerpt from Middle Passage : Blacks rebellious. Crew uneasy. Our linguist says
their moaning is a prayer for death, ours and their own. Some try to starve themselves. Lost three

The Interpretation Of Tempo, Dynamics And Expression...
The interpretation of Tempo, Dynamics and Expression through Instrumentation in three recordings
of Vittorio Monti s Czardas
Vittorio Monti s famous virtuosic piece Czardas has been arranged for many instruments over the
years. Being a percussionist and having played this piece I was interested in how this piece would
vary in terms of tempo, dynamics and expression due to instrumentation. I chose to compare three
recordings: one by violinist Frank Kim accompanied by piano as this represents the piece as it was
originally written for piano and violin. Frank Kim performs it with a lot of expression and extremes
of dynamic and tempo more typical of the romantic period; The Horseholm Percussion and
Marimba Ensemble which used similar ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
The Italian composer Vittorio Monti was born in 1868 in Naples. He attended the Conservatoire
of San Pietro a Majella where he studied composition and violin, as well as playing mandolin.
When he was in his thirty s he was asked to conduct in Paris for the Lamourex Orchestra, during
this period Monti composed a number of operas and ballets such as Noel de Pierrot. In 1904 he
wrote what is probably his most famous piece, Czardas, which he based on the Hungarian folk
dance called Csardas. Although originally composed for solo violin and piano there have been
many arrangements for numerous instruments over the years. Czardas or Hungarian Czardas is a
national dance of Hungary for couples; it is written in simple time and involves forceful
syncopated rhythms. The dance starts off with a slow section called the Lassu and is followed by
a fast section called the Friss.
Monti begins his piece at a slow, broad speed marked largo this represents the lassu from the
dance. In the violin (Monti, 2015) recording the notes are very legato and there is a lot of vibrato
to add extra expression, colour and phrasing to the music. In Cambridge Companion to the violin it
states that vibrato was used...as an expressive ornament (Stowell, 1992) and used mainly for long
notes at the end of a phrase. Spohr states that there are three types of vibrato: slow for sustained
passionate melodies; accelerating for

Bacterial Transformation ( Escherichia Coli )
Bacterial Transformation (Escherichia coli)

November 11, 2014
Introduction According to Medicine.net (2012), genetic transformation is a process by which the
genetic material carried by an individual cell is altered by the incorporation of foreign/exogenous
DNA into its genome. Competent cells are able to accept DNA presented by experimental influence
or manipulation, and the application of genetic engineering with bacteria can aid in the fight against
diseases, allowing individuals to maintain their lifestyles without the threat of certain illnesses like
heart disease, cancer or hereditary disorders (McPhersson 2008). Plasmid DNA are small circular
double stranded helixes, and present in the plasmid are ampr (selectable marker gene) and GFP
(Green Florescent Protein), (BIO RAD 2010).
Figure 1: Illustrates the bacterial plasmid of E. Coli showing the select marker gene and the color
marker gene present.
The bacteria that was used in the experiment was Escherichia coli, it is one of the most commonly
used organisms for gene transfer, and most E. coli are non pathogenic. A non pathogenic strain was
used to conduct the experiment. The conditions was kept at 37 в—¦C, which is the temperature of
the human intestines (BIO RAD 2010). Arabinose is a sugar that the bacteria needs for energy,
used as a food source and enables GFP, which in turn is regulated by araC (Redway 2013).

Video Editing Essay
TASK 1 PROPOSAL (Typed document minimum 1000 words)
Special investigation into editing
I will be talking about editing work through the industry of media, we will start some of the
software that is used in the industry today, these include, Premier pro, Avid, and final cut, avid
has always been a strong editing software in the industry, but as some technology rises and falls
premier pro is just edging the gap into the industry, as regular updates of this software make it
the better choice for editing films together as different filters, transitions and bugs with in the
software are updated, for the software to be crisp. Final cut on the other hand is mostly use by
educational establishments for training people to use software like this in the future as in the last
few years final cut has dropped down in consumer use as it is not been updated and is less
consumer friendly for use then premier and avid, This is reason for it being used in education.
Methodology of Video Editing
There are several different ways to edit video and each method has its pros and cons. Although
most editors go for non linear editing for most projects, it makes sense to have an understanding of
how each method works, as some people prefer different options or how some look, i.e Vintage
Film Splicing
film editing was the first way to edit moving pictures and conceptually it forms the basis of all
video editing, as film had to be spliced and put together back in the day.

The Symptoms Of Jenny s Condition
Some of the symptoms of Jenny s condition was that she first kept a messy desk at school, in
which her teachers would complain about. She then began hiding her toys from her father and
thus, became very emotionally attached to them. After she was put on medication for her
ADHD, she was having troubles making simple decisions such as what to wear for the day, and
had extreme troubles with throwing away boxes, in which she justified that she knew they would
come in handy for something one day (34). Jenny began making excuses like this for other
irrational hoarding behaviors, such as keeping the original packaging for her toys because, she
knew that an item would typically sell at a higher price if it were in the original packaging (34).
She had anxietywhen she thought about losing these types of items, and even had an emotional
breakdown when her mother threw away all of her toilet paper rolls. Once she became engaged,
she began to become obsessed with wedding planning, which then turned her office into a mess.
Even after she had kids, she continued collectingthings that she believed were important, refusing
to throw away anything, which only took over their whole house. She would even constantly buy
items off Ebay or Amazon to hoard. All of these dynamic symptoms combined, described hoarding
disorder, identified within the book, which is excessive acquisition and difficultying discarding
items, which results in extreme clutter in the living environment. This is

How Does Matsuo Basho s Journey Affect Literature
Matsuo Basho s journey has a significant impact on literature due to his well written journals
that reveal his lifestyle and experiences. In his first journal, The Records of a Weather exposed
Skeleton, Basho conveys his spiritual thoughts and religious life that he experiences on a new
journey. Basho s journal contains several poems as he further reveals different people, traditions,
and significant places that made his journey more memorable. In Matsuo Basho s first journal he
reveals the several reasons on why he is travelling. Basho departs from his home into the North
in order to experience the culture aspects and nature of Japan. Throughout, the first journal, we
see Basho s search for enlightenment in his pilgrimage. We see the different locations that Basho
has gone to in order to learn more and to be part of the traditions. As stated by Basho, ...I left my
broken house on the River Sumida in the August of the first year of Jyokyo among the wails of
the autumn wind (Basho 51). This quote explains that Basho leaves his home on a long pilgrimage
in order to discover more about religionand develop a better understanding about Japanese culture
as he is motivated to gain enlightenment. As he travels we readers realize how Basho becomes

As a poet Basho s phenomenal word choice and description allowed us readers to view his
journey as if we are there with him. It is amazing to see that Basho is such a religious person

haiku s. In addition, this reading was interesting to me because it shows Basho s motivation to
become more enlightened and his choice to live according to Buddha s life as expressed through
his poems. Reading this journal was one of the best pieces of literature that I have read because of

Explained Behavior In The Classroom
After studying the chart in Chapter 8, I was able to recall many situations where students have
demonstrated some of the explained behaviors. One typical behavior that I see not only in my
classroom, but in my school, is students arguing loudly with teachers. According to Payne, students
living in poverty may argue with the teacher due to a distrust in authority. This past week I was on
bus duty which meant that I was waiting in the hallway with the elementary students calling out
bus numbers. This is a very chaotic time due to parent dismissals, walking students, NRT buses,
etc. so we try to limit the number of students in the hallways. While I was on duty I noticed one of
my fifth grade students hanging out in the hallway with their backpack on. In my school, which is
first through eighth grade, the upper grades bell schedules are different. Therefore, I knew that
she was not dismissed yet and belonged in one of the classrooms. I asked her why she was in the
hallway so early and she responded with, I need to wait for someone. I then asked who she was
waiting for and... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
After reflecting on this particular situation, I feel as though I did not do my best to model
respect for my student because I started to get defensive. Instead of becoming defensive, I should
have taken a second to compose myself and really think about the best way to move forward. One
way I could have done this would be to try and understand why the student was trying to sneak out
of the classroom early. Was the class still learning? Or, could I have asked her to be a bus monitor
helper so that I could keep an eye on her while preventing an argument from happening.
Understanding students behaviors and having a toolbox of interventions is extremely important. I
strongly believe that I can use the chart in Chapter 8 to better understand my students and their

Augustus Principate Analysis
The settlement of 27 BC and 23 BC leave little doubt about where real power lay. The settlement
through the two of these constitutional arrangements has some roles that it is needed to be
conformed in the development of Augustus principate because they were a decisive role in the
establishment of Augustus principate. Augustushas used sundry political strategies to obtain control
in Rome. These successful strategies, has been suitably evolved in Augustus gaining his superior
power in various districts essentially the Roman army and increasing the founding of his

During 23 BC, Augustus was granted Tribunician Authority for life, he now had the power to
legislate in the assemblies which also led him to summon the senate. He was given the authority to

Theme Of Marigolds
Adolescence is a bumpy and unknown section of the road known as life. Both the short story
Marigolds by Eugenia Collier and the poem Hard on the Gas, by Janet S. Wong relate to the
theme that the road to growing up and maturing isn t always smooth . Marigolds is the story of
an adolescent who is growing up in the Great Depression. Through hard experiences and
tumultuous emotions, the narrator learns that growing up is full of ups and downs. Hard on
the Gas is a poem about a grandchild driving with his or her grandfather. The grandchild realizes
that the road isn t always perfect and that there will be bumps along the way. The theme the road
growing up and maturing isn t always smooth is conveyed in both of these selection. In
Marigolds a young girl is growing up during the Great Depression. For Lizabeth, the narrator,
everyday is a challenge. As she transitions from an innocent, naive child to an aware, yet unsure
young woman, the smooth road she s been traveling on suddenly becomes bumpy and unfamiliar
when a fit of anger taken out on her neighbor marks Lizabeth s growing up. All the smoldering
emotions of that summer swelled in me and burst the great need for my mother who was never
there, the hopelessness of our poverty and degradation, the bewilderment of being neither child
nor woman and yet both at once... , (Collier, Marigolds ). All of the emotions that Lizabeth has
been holding in spill out of her in an audacious, violent action that will exile her childhood; the
destroying of Miss Lottie s prized marigolds. When Lizabeth realizes with remorse what she s
done, she gains the heavy burden of adulthood. In that humiliating moment I looked beyond myself
and into the depths of another person. This was the beginning of compassion, and one cannot have
both compassion and innocence , (Collier, Marigolds ). When Lizabeth conveys that Miss Lottie
had planted marigolds as a show of passion and hope, she becomes compassionate towards Miss
Lottie, ridding her of her childish innocence. While Hard on the Gas is minimally worded, the
meaning of the poem speaks volumes. The poem conveys growing up, and the fact that the road to
adulthood is not, in fact, smooth. Rush, rest, rush, rest ,

The Saskatchewan River Watershed Flows
Introduction
The Saskatchewan River watershed is a major river in Canada which flows eastward across
Saskatchewan and Manitoba into Lake Winnipeg. It is a source of water to humans and livestock
(Partners for the Saskatchewan River Basin, 2009). The watershed has a distinctive delta which is
the largest inland freshwater delta in North America. The delta begins at the west of the
Saskatchewan Manitoba boundary (Partners for the Saskatchewan River Basin, 2009).
The South Saskatchewan River watershed flows from the Northern shores of Lake Diefenbaker out
of the Gardiner Dam towards the City of Saskatoon. It continues north to eventually become the
Saskatchewan River (shown in Figure 1 below). The North Saskatchewan River watershed flows
eastwards across Edmonton, Alberta and joins with the South Saskatchewan River watershed to
form the Saskatchewan River watershed. These watersheds provide many recreational attractions
such as fishing and opportunities for sightseeing, canoeing, fishing and hiking. The Saskatchewan
River watershed begins at the confluence of the North and South Saskatchewan River watersheds.
From this point, the Saskatchewan River watershed passes through the Saskatchewan Delta, into
Lake Winnipeg, which eventually drains into Hudson Bay through the Nelson River. Figure 1
shows a map of the South Saskatchewan, North Saskatchewan and the Saskatchewan River
Watersheds.

Ancient Babylonia
When studying Ancient Babylonia it is notably important to look at these factors: daily life,
religion, people, society, government and economy so we can determine the development of the
civilization and how it is similar to the way we live today. The Babylonian Empire is unique
because their government was run by a law known as the Code of Hammurabi similarly are
government is run by numerous laws. Their knowledge of science and astrology is intriguing due

They also had a list of magical stones to develop their knowledge of mineralogy. Map mating
was a very known science to the Babylonians most of them were experienced in it which made
them more aware of there surrounding. Babylonians drew maps of local areas such as field
plans, estates plans, grounds plants of temples and houses as well as maps of more distant
regions such as larger areas: districts and towns. Their maps were drawn mostly in straight lines,
with little attention to scale, angles and orientation. Most of the sciences they began to study
and explore are the same sciences that we are going into today. The Babylonians have built the
foundation for us and we used that and are building the rest. br br Mathematics was just as
important to the Babylonian as it is to us. They however calculated things entirely different from
us. A prime example of this is their number system which had two disadvantages: (1) it was
confusing and, therefore, not used in many daily economic activities (2) there was no special
sign for zero, to separate the different units, so they would leave two blank spaces for zero or by
using a special sign that indicated a space between two words. Babylonian mathematicians
developed a mastery of algebraic skill, even though there was no graphic symbol for the unknown.
Instead they invented a method called false value. Babylonians also

Bernard Baruch Cross cultural communication is the process of exchanging meaningful and unambiguous information across cultural boundaries, in a way that preserves mutual respect and minimizes antagonism, that is, it looks at how people from differing cultural backgrounds endeavour to communicate. The study of cross cultural communication was originally found within businesses and the government both seeking to expand globally. Communication is interactive, so an important influence on its effectiveness is our relationship with others. Cross Cultural Competence is and should be the aim of all those dealing with multicultural clients, customers or colleagues. Competence is the final stage of cross cultural understanding and signifies the actor s ability to work effectively across cultures. Cross cultural competency is beyond knowledge, awareness and sensitivity in that it is the digestion, integration and transformation of all the skills and information acquired through them, applied to create cultural synergy within the workplace. • 3. Research Paper- Negative Effects on Children by Watching Tv We do not believe there is anything sexist or violent about the World Wrestling Federation. I think it s unfair of you to insinuate it when there are so many shows and so many different movies, and so many different social problems that really do contribute to violence in this country. UPN president Dean Valentine in 1999 after a 7 year old child in Dallas killed his little brother with a clothesline maneuver he had seen on a wrestling show. One fact should not be in dispute: TV is violent! Guns, shootings, murders, hitting, punching, slapping, screaming, kicking, stabbing, explosions, car chases, car smashes, disasters and death are shown daily throughout TV programming. Most violence is not even in nightly news programs and nearly ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... 3. TV is a World of Good and Bad Even though both criminals and cops can both commit justifiable violence television is still a simple medium. TV presents good guys and bad guys. On average, there are 15 minutes of commercials for every one hour of TV programming, so producers only have a short amount of time in which to establish plot, story, characters and resolution. Good characters and bad characters must be quickly and simply established. Deeper, more realistic, more ambiguous characterizations make it hard for viewers to know who to root for. It also requires more screen time that takes away from on screen action, states the Center for Media Literacy. As a result, TV and film criminals are reduced to caricatures. They are l00% bad. No one could care about them. They have no families. Many of them don t even have full names, only nick names. They deserve no sympathy and they get what they deserve. The bad guys, whether they are cops or robbers, have to be 100% bad to justify the violence against them. Television violence is the struggle of good versus evil. It s OK to shoot the bad guy after all, he s the bad guy. According to the study by the Center for Media and Public Affairs, the most violent show observed in 1999 was CBS Walker, Texas Ranger. This show took the top spot for overall violence with a rate of 112 acts per show, over two thirds of them (82) serious. Almost every episode of this long running Chuck Norris cop show includes ... • 7. Mariama Ba And Sindiwe Magona 1. Introduction The critical analysis of gender probabilities in the African context is not a new venture but a significant discussion to the development of gender, cultural and feminist theorists. This study investigates the limitations to empowerment Africa women face at the hands of patriarchal societies, exacerbated by the oppression and subjugation employed by traditional, cultural and religious norms within two different African countries, that is, Senegal and South Africa. The research analyzes two novels by important women writers in African literature, Mariama Ba and Sindiwe Magona. These two dedicated women writers examine the different ways in which African patriarchy and religion broadly manifests itself regarding the position of women. Mariama Ba`s novel So Long A Letter (1981) expresses the Islamic and African laws which core existed in Senegal. As Layiwola (1998: 153) state, So Long a Letter narrates, in a personal correspondence to another friend, the woes of a ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... A hedge fund is similar to a mutual fund in that it invests funds on behalf of clients. However, unlike mutual funds hedge funds are not required to register under U.S. federal securities law. This is because they accept funds only from В®nancially sophisticated individuals and do not publicly oВЂer their securities. Mutual funds are subject to regulations requiring that shares in the funds be fairly priced, that the shares be redeemable at any time, that investment policies be disclosed, that the use of leverage be limited, that no short positions be taken, and so on. Hedge funds are relatively ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... Note that a company might do better if it chooses not to hedge than if it chooses to hedge. Alternatively, it might do worse. Consider ImportCo. If the exchange rate is 1.7000 on October 14 and the company has not hedged, the ВЈ10 million that it has to pay will cost $17,000,000, which is less than $18,405,000. On the other hand, if the exchange rate is 1.9000, the ВЈ10 million will cost $19,000,000Гђand the company will wish it had hedged! The position of ExportCo if it does not hedge is the reverse. If the exchange rate in September proves to be less than 1.8400, the company will wish it had hedged; if the rate is greater than 1.8400, it will be pleased it has not done so. This example illustrates a key aspect of hedging. Hedging reduces the risk, but it is not necessarily the case that the outcome with hedging will be better than the outcome without hedging. Hedging Using Options Options can also be used for hedging. Example 1.2 considers an investor who in May of a particular year owns 1,000 Microsoft shares. The share price is $28 per share. The Example 1.2 Hedging with options It is May. An investor who owns 1,000 Microsoft shares wants protection against a possible decline in the share price over the next two months. The Alaska Lng Project, A Pipeline I am writing to you in response to the proposed Alaska LNG project, a pipeline that stretches from the North Slope to the small community of Nikiski, Alaska, that you are currently supporting as chairman of the Senate Energy and Natural resources committee (Alex Martinson, 2015). Please realize that I am not an expert in this matter but simply a concerned citizen who would regret to know that negative environmental and community effects would result from the construction of facilities associated with a natural gas pipeline and production. Allow me to start by saying that this state and the Kenai Peninsula community, are very important to me. I have lived in Nikiski, Alaska for the past 11 years, and I would sincerely hate to see this community and state polluted by large scale LNG production and transportation if it could be avoided. I also realize the positive economic outcome for the state of Alaska as well as the U.S. as a whole. However, do these fiscal gains constitute enough incentive to potentially disrupt natural environments and put Alaska s citizens at risk? Consider the Trans Alaska Pipeline and crude oil transportation that is currently in place from the North Slope to the Valdez Marine Terminal. Many oil spills have occurred since it began transportation in 1977 such as the one that occurred in 2006 that went undetected for days resulting in 267,000 gallons of crude oil escaping into the environment (Barringer, 2006). • 13. The Pay Gap Between Men And Women The pay gap between men and women has become quite a topic today. The difference in pay are very common now in many career paths where men and women are doing the same work amount. It is rare to think that when men and women are performing the same task and are just as qualified as each other that they would get paid the same. As the wage gap is being discussed more, the question is why do men and women have different wages when they are working the same job. While it seems that men don t have to take as much time off from work or may work more, we have to look at it from Women s viewpoints also. Women and Men should be paid equally for the work that they perform. However, if a Manis working a in a factory or any other job that has them constantly lifting things and a womanworks there and they can t do the same as the man can then, the man should receive more pay. Women and Men should have the same pay unless they are not performing the same task. The novel tells the story of what a horrible and disturbing world looks like when things go wrong. Sigmund Freud was a psychologist that studied how humans minds work and our controlled by basic impulses in the unconscious brain called the Id, Superego, and the Ego(CommonLit Staff). In the book, Jack represents the Id, Ralph represents Ego, and Piggy is the Superego. The most basic and oldest brain part is the Id. Freud believed that the Id was the location of our pleasure principle. This is the area that tells us to seek instant gratification from the things we do (CommonLit Staff). It doesn t know things like right or wrong and justs acts like an animal doing whatever it wants and whenever it wants. The boy named Jack is the Id part of the brain. Jack, obsessed with the idea of killing a pig, camouflages his face with clay and charcoal and enters the jungle to hunt, accompanied by several other boys. On the beach, Ralph and Piggy see a ship on the horizon but they also see that the signal fire has gone out (Chapter 4). Analysis Of Nathaniel Hawthorne s The Scarlet Letter Jalon Ellison English 10 Mrs. Jackson 16 December 2015 A Sinner Defined by The Scarlet Letter Society has not changed as far as labeling people and probably never will. In the Puritan society they branded, tortured, and defined human beings the way they saw them even though they did not know how the person they were humiliating truly was. Hester Prynne is a good example of this in the novel The Scarlet Letter written by the author Nathaniel Hawthorne. Hawthorne is using the character Hester in this novel to show how society can truly label people. People can be defined by the biggest thing in their life and in this case the letter A has brought a whole new meaning to Hester s life and has defined her apart from others in the community in a way she never thought. The Puritan society never focuses on Hester, how she acts, who she talks to, or even what she wears until she commits a sin. After the whole community knows of her sin then they know her as the adulterer, the sinner, the one who should be punished but what they do not know is what kind of a person she really is. Hester Prynne is kind, smart, and a beautiful woman who is trying to do her best in life in the new world considering her husband left her and did not return until she is brought upon the scaffold in front of the town for humiliation. The Puritan community is continuously going by their rules and guidelines and not caring to look for the whole truth but just enough truth to harm those who have done ... The story was centered around a seemingly poor couple who did not have enough money to buy each other the gifts that their significant other deserved. The story took place during Christmas. The Gift of the Magi is like a classic wisdom story in the bible. O Henrys choice of title depicts symbolism between the three magi that brought gold, frankincense, and mur, to the baby Jesus and the gifts that Jim and Della had given to each other which mainly consisted of selfless love, Della s hair and Jims pocket watch. This itself ties into the theme of his story. These gifts all entail the act... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... Meanwhile, Jim decides to sell his most prized possession which was a pocket watch that was passed down from his grandfather to his father and then to him. He sells that watch and buys Della a set of beautiful tortoise shell combs for her hair. Thus leading to the use of situational irony in which they both receive gifts for something they gave up in order to give the other a gift. Jim and Della perform an act of selfless love by their willingness to give something that held great value to them in order to get special presents for each other on Christmas. They do all of this out of love for the other. However, you will see that these gives prove to end up having no use in the end but that is not the main point. The main point is that although this ironic situation occurs, they both find joy in the thought that they would do this for each other. This love that they have for each other is far greater value than any gift that could be given. Jim doesn t overreact or get angry with this conclusion. Rather, he tells Stella, Let s put our Christmas Present away and keep em a while. They re too nice to use just at present. And, because it is widely recognized that prevalence and severity of PDB is decreasing in the world population, total ALP levels remain within reference ranges far longer, making anecdotal discovery rare. Although there is no cure for PDB, early detection is vital for commencement of diet, exercise, and drug regimens that significantly mitigate debilitating symptoms and disease progression. Per Magnusson, Michael Davie and Christopher Sharp compared total ALP and three isoforms of ALP (B/I, B1, B2) of 37 patients with various stages of PDB and a control group of 66 healthy patients. Their findings revealed that the B2 isoform of ALP is increased in asymptomatic PDB patients with a validity of 80% on a characteristic comparison curve of true postive to false positive ratios. High bone B2 isoform ALP levels may be of use in early discovery, however, only total ALP levels are routinely ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

Social Environment Accounting Accounting Forum 28 (2004) 1 5 Introduction Social and environmental accounting: trends and thoughts for the future Over the years Accounting Forum has explored different possible directions for the п¬Ѓeld of social and environmental accounting. With a new publisher Elsevier it is our hope that we shall reach new markets and opportunities. In recent issues, these explorations have been extended to theorising the role of accounting in transnational global processes, and to the channels of global information and the interpretation of that information. In particular, contributions have attempted to explore the notion that accounting discourse is a medium through which relationships between business and society can be created, nurtured... A cross sectional analysis indicates that the share price response is mainly a function of the relative п¬Ѓne imposed on the п¬Ѓrm; other explanatory variables such as environmental performance news or sector membership were unsuccessful in explaining variations in the market responses they observed. Equally, Accounting Forum has been interested in the interdependencies between social and environmental accounting which extend to the nexus between accounting and information to employees and other relevant parties. In this issue of Accounting Forum, R. G. Day presents evidence concerning the evolution of reporting about employees in the last century and its relationship with mandatory disclosure rules (Day, 2004). This is an interesting phenomenon, given that the current conceptual framework for corporate environmental reporting has only recently begun to analyse the relationship between voluntary and regulated disclosure. For example, accounting research is only just beginning to examine the relationships between the role that International Standards such as ISO 14001 have had on the reporting function. In Day s article, however, he focuses on evidence from the UK and п¬Ѓnds that there is an apparent disregard for statutory disclosures. Observation Of Teaching A Teacher s Classroom I have a good friend, Courtney, who is doing her student teaching in a fourth grade classroom at Faubion elementary school, and she arranged for me to come in to observe her cooperating teacher s classroom. On Friday, December 1st at 10 o clock I had the opportunity to observe Mrs. Makara s classroom for 45 minutes while the class was doing readingstations. The class is organized into six table groups with five students in each group. Mrs. Makara s overhead screen hangs in the front of the room near her table. I noticed that the class was arranged this way in order for all the students to all easily see the screen as well as collaborate with one another for the assignments and projects that are assigned in class. When I came into the classroom Mrs. Makara was finishing up teaching a math lesson. She was using a document camera to project the worksheet that students had in front of them on screen. She was also using a microphone while talking to the class. Courtney later informed me that was because one of their students has a hearing impairment so both Courtney and Mrs. Makara use the microphone when speaking to the class. Mrs. Makara assigned a couple of math problems for the students to work with their table groups to figure out. After each group figured out the answer to the problem Mrs. Makara asked for one volunteer to come up and project their work on the overhead projector. The student showed her work and talked through how her group figured out the solution. Afterward, Mrs. Makara asked all the students to put away their math work and get ready for readingstations. While the students were working to put away their math work Mrs. Makara used her computer to pull up a slide showing the different reading stations. When I asked my friend about how the students were split into groups she informed me that they split them up based on their reading levels because in their class the reading levels are at a wide spectrum. There are some students who are reading at a sixth grade level and others that are reading at a K 1 level. Therefore, the only way they could differentiate reading instruction was by splitting the students into groups based on their reading levels and having them go to the stations that ... • 33. A Textbook Example Of What s Wrong Summary Paulo Freire starts out referring to the Fundamentally narrative character (Freire 1) of education. Loewen starts introduction with high school students hate history (Loewen, 1). At first blush, one wouldn t think the two had much in common. Perhaps, they don t have that much in common, but they do have a common complaint. They both have a dislike for what Freire calls the Banking method of education. Freire defines it as the teacher s task to fill the students with the contents of his narration (Freire, 2). Freire might have been a wild eyed radical, but he was more or less on point with his narration complaint. Loewen only scratches the surface when he describes the boondoggle that is the school textbook in his introduction. In an article titled A Textbook Example of What s Wrong with Education, Tamim Ansary takes it a step further. He describes in detail what Loewen only lightly touched on. It s real inside baseball type stuff, or probably more accurately described as how the sausage is made. He describes the biggest issue as ensuring that the books are necessarily bland to ensure that they will offend no one on the left or right. There are activists groups on both sides of the political spectrum that do little more than dig through proposed textbooks looking for things to find objectionable (Ansary). Of course, one mustn t forget the fact that money is always a factor. Texas, a big fish where textbooks are concerned, spends approx. $42 billion on public schools and there is a specific amount allocated in adoption years for just textbooks (Ansary). Too much truth can get in the way of business. It s not about the most accurate or the most interesting textbooks, but rather about being as inoffensive as possible to the most people. When he was in his thirty s he was asked to conduct in Paris for the Lamourex Orchestra, during this period Monti composed a number of operas and ballets such as Noel de Pierrot. In 1904 he wrote what is probably his most famous piece, Czardas, which he based on the Hungarian folk dance called Csardas. Although originally composed for solo violin and piano there have been many arrangements for numerous instruments over the years. Redway BIO 104 Lab 3 November 11, 2014 Introduction According to Medicine.net (2012), genetic transformation is a process by which the genetic material carried by an individual cell is altered by the incorporation of foreign/exogenous DNA into its genome. Competent cells are able to accept DNA presented by experimental influence or manipulation, and the application of genetic engineering with bacteria can aid in the fight against diseases, allowing individuals to maintain their lifestyles without the threat of certain illnesses like heart disease, cancer or hereditary disorders (McPhersson 2008). Plasmid DNA are small circular double stranded helixes, and present in the plasmid are ampr (selectable marker gene) and GFP (Green Florescent Protein), (BIO RAD 2010). One typical behavior that I see not only in my classroom, but in my school, is students arguing loudly with teachers. This past week I was on bus duty which meant that I was waiting in the hallway with the elementary students calling out bus numbers. This is a very chaotic time due to parent dismissals, walking students, NRT buses, etc. so we try to limit the number of students in the hallways. In my school, which is first through eighth grade, the upper grades bell schedules are different. Therefore, I knew that she was not dismissed yet and belonged in one of the classrooms. • 50. Theme Of Marigolds Adolescence is a bumpy and unknown section of the road known as life. Both the short story Marigolds by Eugenia Collier and the poem Hard on the Gas, by Janet S. Wong relate to the theme that the road to growing up and maturing isn t always smooth . Marigolds is the story of an adolescent who is growing up in the Great Depression. Through hard experiences and tumultuous emotions, the narrator learns that growing up is full of ups and downs. Hard on the Gas is a poem about a grandchild driving with his or her grandfather. The grandchild realizes that the road isn t always perfect and that there will be bumps along the way. The theme the road growing up and maturing isn t always smooth is conveyed in both of these selection. In Marigolds a young girl is growing up during the Great Depression. For Lizabeth, the narrator, everyday is a challenge. As she transitions from an innocent, naive child to an aware, yet unsure young woman, the smooth road she s been traveling on suddenly becomes bumpy and unfamiliar when a fit of anger taken out on her neighbor marks Lizabeth s growing up. All the smoldering emotions of that summer swelled in me and burst the great need for my mother who was never there, the hopelessness of our poverty and degradation, the bewilderment of being neither child nor woman and yet both at once... , (Collier, Marigolds ). All of the emotions that Lizabeth has been holding in spill out of her in an audacious, violent action that will exile her childhood; the destroying of Miss Lottie s prized marigolds. When Lizabeth realizes with remorse what she s done, she gains the heavy burden of adulthood. In that humiliating moment I looked beyond myself and into the depths of another person. This was the beginning of compassion, and one cannot have both compassion and innocence , (Collier, Marigolds ). When Lizabeth conveys that Miss Lottie had planted marigolds as a show of passion and hope, she becomes compassionate towards Miss Lottie, ridding her of her childish innocence. While Hard on the Gas is minimally worded, the meaning of the poem speaks volumes. The poem conveys growing up, and the fact that the road to adulthood is not, in fact, smooth. • 51. The Saskatchewan River Watershed Flows Introduction The Saskatchewan River watershed is a major river in Canada which flows eastward across Saskatchewan and Manitoba into Lake Winnipeg. It is a source of water to humans and livestock (Partners for the Saskatchewan River Basin, 2009). The watershed has a distinctive delta which is the largest inland freshwater delta in North America. The delta begins at the west of the Saskatchewan Manitoba boundary (Partners for the Saskatchewan River Basin, 2009). The South Saskatchewan River watershed flows from the Northern shores of Lake Diefenbaker out of the Gardiner Dam towards the City of Saskatoon. It continues north to eventually become the Saskatchewan River (shown in Figure 1 below). The North Saskatchewan River watershed flows eastwards across Edmonton, Alberta and joins with the South Saskatchewan River watershed to form the Saskatchewan River watershed. These watersheds provide many recreational attractions such as fishing and opportunities for sightseeing, canoeing, fishing and hiking. The Saskatchewan River watershed begins at the confluence of the North and South Saskatchewan River watersheds. From this point, the Saskatchewan River watershed passes through the Saskatchewan Delta, into Lake Winnipeg, which eventually drains into Hudson Bay through the Nelson River. Figure 1 shows a map of the South Saskatchewan, North Saskatchewan and the Saskatchewan River Watersheds. Figure 1: Saskatchewan River drainage basin Source: ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

Map mating was a very known science to the Babylonians most of them were experienced in it which made them more aware of there surrounding. Babylonians drew maps of local areas such as field plans, estates plans, grounds plants of temples and houses as well as maps of more distant regions such as larger areas: districts and towns. Their maps were drawn mostly in straight lines, with little attention to scale, angles and orientation. Most of the sciences they began to study and explore are the same sciences that we are going into today. The Babylonians have built the foundation for us and we used that and are building the rest. br br Mathematics was just as important to the Babylonian as it is to us. They however calculated things entirely different from us. A prime example of this is their number system which had two disadvantages: (1) it was confusing and, therefore, not used in many daily economic activities (2) there was no special sign for zero, to separate the different units, so they would leave two blank spaces for zero or by using a special sign that indicated a space between two words. Babylonian mathematicians developed a mastery of algebraic skill, even though there was no graphic symbol for the unknown. Instead they invented a method called false value. Babylonians also ...
