Tissue hypoxia occurs when tissue perfusion is inadequate to meet tissue demands, resulting in cell injury and death. Initially, compensatory mechanisms work to maintain normal blood flow, but eventually these mechanisms fail as hypoxia progresses, leading to irreversible tissue damage and patient death regardless of treatment.
