IMAAN
It was narrated from ’Umar
that Jibreel ‫السالم‬ ‫عليه‬ said to
the Prophet ‫ﷺ‬ - What is faith
(Iman)? He said: “To believe
in Allah, His Angels, His
Books, His Messengers, the
Last Day and the divine
decree, both good and bad,”
Jibreel said to him: You have
spoken the truth. He said: We
were amazed that he asked
him and then confirmed his
answers as being correct. The
Prophet ‫ﷺ‬ said: “That was
Jībreel, who came to teach you
your religion.` - Muslim (8)

Correct Tawhid with many Sins is better
than
Shirk and Bidah with many Good Deeds
Ibn Taimiyyah (RA)
Shirk
• Linguistically means
partnership, sharing or
association.
• In Islam, it refers to
assigning partners to
Allah in whatever form it
may take.
Tawhid
• Linguistically means ‘to make
something one’.
• In its Islamic usage, it means
‘to testify to the uniqueness
and oneness of Allah and
• To make all of one’s worship
for Allah alone’.
“Allah forgives not that partners should be set up with Him; but He forgives anything else, to whom He
pleases; to set up partners with Allah is to devise a sin most heinous indeed.” [Surah an-Nisaa’, 4:48]
“Verily, Allah forgives not (the sin of) setting up partners (in worship) with Him, but He forgives whom He
wills sins other than that. And whoever sets up partners with Allah (in worship), has indeed strayed far
away.”
[Surah an-Nisaa’, 4:116]
“And it was already revealed to you and to those before you that if you should associate [anything] with
Allah, your work would surely become worthless, and you would surely be among the losers."
[Surah Az-Zumar 39:65]
On the authority of Abu Hurayrah (may Allah be pleased with him), who said that the Messenger of
Allah ‫ﷺ‬
) ) said: Allah (glorified and exalted be He) said: I am so self-sufficient that I am in no need of having
an associate. Thus he who does an action for someone else's sake as well as Mine will have that action
renounced by Me to him whom he associated with Me.
It was related by Muslim (also by Ibn Majah). Hadith 5, 40 Hadith Qudsi https://sunnah.com/qudsi40:5
"And most of them believe not in Allah except while they associate others with Him." [Surah Yusuf 12:106]
“Say, O Prophet, “O you disbelievers! I do not worship what you worship, I will never worship
what you worship, nor will you ever worship what I worship. For you is your religion, and for me
is my religion. [Surah Al-Kafirun, 109: 1-6]”
“Say [O Muhammad], "I am only a man like you, to whom has been revealed that your god is one
God. So whoever would hope for the meeting with his Lord - let him do righteous work and not
associate in the worship of his Lord with anyone.“ [Surah Al-Kahf 18:110]
“Then do not set up rivals unto Allah (in worship) while you know (that He Alone has the right to
be worshipped).” [Surah Baqarah 2:22]
“Surely whoever associates (others) with Allah, Allah has forbidden to him Paradise and his abode
is the Fire.” [Surah Maidah 5:72]
Prophet (
‫ﷺ‬
) said: “Whoever dies claiming that Allah has a rival, will enter Hell.”
[Al-Bukhaari, 4497; Muslim, 92]
• Remembering Allah keeps the heart aware of Allah and the intention pure.
Al-Hasan reported: Umar, may Allah be pleased with him, used to say,
“O Allah, make my deeds righteous, make them purely for
Your sake, and do not let anyone else have a share of them.”
• Mentioning Allah’s Name before all acts in our daily life
DUA FOR PROTECTION FROM SHIRK
The Messenger (‫)ﷺ‬ warned us against shirk, fearing that his
ummah might fall into Shirk and said,
“THE THING I FEAR MOST FOR YOU IS MINOR SHIRK”.
(Ahmad 23119)
He (‫)ﷺ‬ also said,
“Shirk among you is more subtle than the sound of the
footsteps of an ant on a rock. Shall I not tell you of
something which, if you do it, this DUA will take that away
from you both minor and major forms of it”.

Tawhid
Tawhid Ilmi (Knowledge) Tawhid Amali (Action)
• Establishes in our heart
• establishes perfection of our Rabb in
our hearts
• Surat-ul Ikhlas
• Establishes in our actions
• Establishes love and obedience to our
Rabb
• Surat-ul Kafiroon
• Teaches us denial of other false Gods
and religions
The Prophet (
‫ﷺ‬
) would recite Surat-ul Ikhlas and Surat-ul Kafiroon
in the Sunnah Salah of Fajr, Maghrib, and after Tawaf.
Tawhid
Knowledge Action

Belief that others share Allah’s Lordship
• Hinduism (multiple Gods), Christianity
(Trinity), Zoroastrians (Fire worshipper)
• Some Muslims, believe that souls of saints
and other righteous humans can affect affairs
of this world, even after their death. It is
believed their souls can fulfil ones needs,
remove calamities and aid whoever calls
them.
Disbelief in any pillars of the FAITH/Imaan
• Atheism, Buddhism, Pantheism (He is found in everything),
Jainism
• Sufis claim that “All is Allah and Allah is all”.
• Dutch Jewish philosopher, Baruch Spinoza, who claimed
that God is the total of all parts of the universe including
man.
• Darwin's theory of evolution is also an attempt to explain the
evolution of life and its forms from lifeless matter without
the intervention of God
• Messenger of Allah (‫)ﷺ‬ said, "That which differentiates us
from the disbelievers and hypocrites is our performance of
Salat. He who abandons it, becomes a disbeliever." [At-
Tirmidhi]. https://sunnah.com/riyadussalihin:1079
Shirk in Asmaa wa-Sifaat
Shirk by Humanization Shirk by Deification
Giving Allah the attributes of his creation
• The biblical notion that Allah feels fatigue, so
much so that after He created the universe, He
needed to take a rest for an entire day! This is
refuted in Ayat Al-Kursi.
• Hindus and Buddhists worship idols that have the
likeness of Asian man or woman and consider
them the manifestation of God in creation.
• Some Christian painters such as Michaelangelo
have drawn God looking like an European man
with long white hair and beard and is plastered on
the ceiling of the Sistine Chapel in Vatican.
Treating a mere mortal or a created being as
someone Godly
• When out of extreme love & respect – any created
being is obsessively praised, blindly followed or
being considered as protector or intercessor
• A lot of human beings who were considered
deities by themselves or by others either during
their lifetime or after death
(https://religion.wikia.org/wiki/List_of_people_who_have_been_considered_deities)
• Saints, dynasty of emperors, power-hungry
narcissists, dictators, myth cults, religious
reformers, mystery rituals and theologically inspired
radicals, cultural heroes,
Shirk by Deification - continued….
It is forbidden to use any name which implies enslavement to
anything besides Allah, such as:
1. Abd al-Uzza (slave of al-Uzza a pagan goddess)
2. Abd al-Kabah (slave of the Kabah)
3. Abd al-Daar (slave of the House)
4. Abd Ali (slave of Ali)
5. Abd al-Husayn (slave of Husayn)
6. Abd al-Hajar (slave of the stone)
7. Abd foolaan (slave of so-and-so)
8. Abd al-Nabi (slave of the Prophet)
9. Abd al-Maseeh (slave of the Messiah)
It is forbidden to use the names of devils (shayaateen), such as :
1. Khanzab,
2. al-Walhaan,
3. al-Awar and
4. al-Ajda.
It was reported that the Sunnah is to change names such as these.
• It is not permissible to call any human being by
these names of Allah (swt), according to
scholarly consensus, such as:
1. Allaah,
2. al-Rabb (the Lord),
3. ar-Rahmaan (the Most Gracious),
4. al-Ahad (the Unique),
5. as-Samad (the Self-Sufficient Master),
6. al-Mutakabbir (the Majestic),
7. al-Khaaliq (the Creator)
8. al-Razzaaq (the Provider)
9. al-Qaahir (the Subduer)
10. al-Zaahir (the Most High)
11. al-Jabbaar (the Compeller)
12. al-Mutakabbir (the Majestic)
13. al-Awwal (the First)
14. al-Aakhir (the Last)
15. al-Baatin (the Most Near or the Hidden)
16. ‘Allaam al-Ghuyoob (Knower of the unseen)

Shirk in Uloohiyah
(Ibadah/Worship)
Shirk Al-Akbar (Major Shirk)
Any act of worship is directed to other than Allah
• The Messenger (‫)ﷺ‬ of Allah, He who dies without
associating anyone with Allah would enter Paradise and he
who dies associating anything with Allah would enter the
Fire of Hell. Sahih Muslim 93a
https://sunnah.com/muslim:93a
• Major shirk can be divided into six categories:
1. Associating in SUPPLICATION
2. Association in the INTENTION
3. Association in FEAR
4. Association in LOVING ALLAH
5. Association in OBEDIENCE
6. Association in RELIANCE
Minor shirk does not expel one from the
Religion of Islam, but it causes a deficiency in
Tawhid; and it is a way to major Shirk
• Ar-Riyaa (showing off)
• Statements
• Actions
Shirk Al-Asgar (Minor Shirk)
Shirk Al-Akbar (Major Shirk)
Example :
• Making dua to Prophet Muhammad ‫ﷺ‬ or to any one
• Doing sujood or salat or Quran or asking the dead in the grave
• Instead of praying for the dead, assuming all dead people are already
in the Heaven/ trying to communicate with them
• Going to the Peers/righteous persons for dua
• Black magic, fortune teller, astrology, Psychic reading, palmistry
• Asking someone else to do the Ruquiyah or to intercede with Allah
• Doing Tawaaf other than Kabah
• Pledging (sacrificial animal) anything other than Allah
• Asking for guidance to someone else
• Confessing sins to someone, hoping for forgiveness
1. “Associating in SUPPLICATION (DUA)” - directing one’s supplications
to other than Allah as a means of gaining provisions or being cured from a
sickness or obtaining help during a crisis or for any other purpose.
 “Those whom you invoke other than Allah are creatures like you. So invoke them. and see if they answer your call,
if what you claim is true.” (Surah Al-Araf 7:194)
 “To Him alone should all supplication be addressed. But those whom they supplicate besides Him do not respond
to them in any Way..” (Surah Ar-Rad 13:14)
Shirk Al-Akbar (Major Shirk) 2. “Association in the INTENTION”
Sahih Muslim 1905a; Hadith 6, 40 Hadith Qudsi - Abu Huraira said: I heard the Messenger of Allah ‫ﷺ‬
) ) say:
• The first of men (whose case) will be decided on the Day of Judgment will be a man who died as a martyr. He shall
be brought before the Judgment Seat. Allah will make him recount His blessings (i. e. the blessings which He had
bestowed upon him) and he will recount them and admit having enjoyed them in his life. Then will Allah say: What
did you do with these blessings? He will say: I fought for until I died as a martyr. Allah will say: You have told a lie.
You fought that you might be called a" brave warrior". And you were called so. Then orders will be passed against
him, and he will be dragged with his face downward and cast into Hell.
• Then will be brought forward a man who acquired knowledge and conveyed it to others and recited the Qur'an. He
will be brought, And Allah will make him recount His blessings and he will recount them and admit having enjoyed
them in his lifetime. Then will Allah ask: What did you do with these blessings? He will say: I acquired knowledge
and spread it and recited the Qur'an seeking the pleasure. Allah will say: You have told a lie. You acquired knowledge
so that you might be called" a scholar," and you recited the Qur'an so that it might be said: " He is a Qari" and such
has been said. Then orders will be passed against him, and he shall be dragged with his face downward and cast into
the Fire.
• Then will be brought a man whom Allah had made abundantly rich and had granted every kind of wealth. He will be
brought, and Allah will make him recount His blessings and he will recount them and (admit having enjoyed them in
his lifetime). Allah will (then) ask: What did you do with these blessings? He will say: I spent money in every cause
in which I wished that it should be spent. Allah will say: You are lying. You did (so) that it might be said about (You):
"He is a generous fellow" and so it was said. Then will Allah pass orders and he will be dragged with his face
downward and thrown into Hell. https://sunnah.com/muslim:1905a ; https://sunnah.com/qudsi40:6
Shirk Al-Akbar (Major Shirk)
Example :
• Not believing in the Divine Decree or Day Of Judgement or in any pillars of Imaan
• Intentionally doing sins (riba, cheating, haram) assuming Jannah is guaranteed
• Performing any acts of worship to impress people or for worldly gains
• Taking part in the worship of non-muslims
• Assuming others have powers or knowledge to know about the UNSEEN
• When we are granted with any blessings or any calamities are removed, we start thanking or expressing gratitude to other persons
instead of Allah (SWT) [by Sujood-Ash-Shukur]
• Attributing praises or taking/giving credit for any success or achievement to anyone else other than Allah - denying the fact that
Allah alone is the true bestower of blessings and favors
• EXCESSIVE PRAISE instills ARROGANCE in one's heart, CORRUPTS one’s intention, makes them OBSESSED about the
object of the praise, DISTRACTS them from the focus of the AKHIRA.
2. “Association in the INTENTION” – Continuation…..
performing deeds that may be good in themselves, but which are done for the
sake of this worldly life and not for the sake of Allah.
 “God is pure and good, and He accepts only what is pure and good.” (Saheeh Muslim)
 "Actions are according to intentions, and everyone will get what was intended.” – Bukhari & Muslim
 Imam Bukhari explains that every action that is done without seeking Allah’s pleasure is invalid and devoid of reward.
 “He who lets the people hear of his good deeds intentionally, to win their praise, Allah will let the people know his real
intention, and he who does good things in public to show off and win the praise of the people, Allah will disclose his
real intention (and humiliate him).” [Al-Bukhari]
 “And I do not think the Hour will occur. And even if I should be brought back to my Lord, I will surely find better than
this as a return." [Surah Kahf 18:36]
Shirk Al-Akbar (Major Shirk)
 “Indeed they have a greater fear of you in their hearts than of Allah. That is because they are a people who do not understand.”
[Sūrah al-Hashr no.59:13]
 And whoever fears Allah, He will make a way for him to get out (from every difficulty), and He will provide him from (sources)
he could never imagine.[Sūrah al-Ṭalāq, 65:2,3]
 "Allah only accepts from those who fear." [Sūrah al-Māidah 5:27]
 “So do not fear people, but fear Me.” [Sūrah al-Māidah, 5:44]
 And they threaten you with those (they worship) other than Him.” [Sūrah al-Zumar, 39:36]
Example :
• Fearing any entity (powerful/influential/Jinn) other than Allah
• Preventing family members and kids from going to masjid in fear that they may become extremist and thus not educating much
about Islam.
• Refraining from keeping muslim name for kids in fear that they might get discriminated or changing muslim names
• Taking off Hijab for being bullied as muslim or for not getting married or not able to fit in the crowd
• Not praying in public places in fear of people
3. “Association in the FEAR” – Ibn al-Qayyim says, “Fear is worship of the
heart, and it is not fitting to be given to others besides Allah, similar to
repentance, love, reliance, hope, and other aspects of worship of the heart.”
Natural and innate fear is permissible. Those who do not have faith in Allah are vulnerable to many forms of fear. They fear what others
will say, what people will think and do. They fear the uncertainties of life, fear of failure, of pain, rejection, etc. and ultimately living in
anxiety. They are afraid of the negative emotion that causes anxiety and tightness as they anticipate an unpleasant occurrence.
Shirk Al-Akbar (Major Shirk) 3. “Association in the FEAR” Ibn al-Qayim said:
"On his way to Allah, a [believer's] heart is likened to a bird: Love is its Head, Fear
and Hope are its wings. Hence, when the head and wings are sound, the bird will
perfectly fly; if the head is cut, the bird will die and when he loses the wings, he will
be inevitably objected to hunting".
Even˺ the closest ˹to Allah˺ of those invoked
would be seeking a way to their Lord,
hoping for His mercy, and fearing His
punishment. Indeed, your Lord’s torment is
fearsome. [Surah Al-Isra 17:57]
As for those who commit evil ignorantly,
then repent afterwards and correct
themselves, then your Lord is surely All-
Forgiving, Most Merciful. [Surah An-Nahl
16:119]
Shirk Al-Akbar (Major Shirk)
 “There are men who take others besides Allah as equal with Him. They love them as much as they should love Allah.
But the believers have more love for Allah.” (Surah Baqarah 2:165)
 “Have you not seen the one who takes his desires as his God?”[Surah al-Furqaan 25:43]
 “Those who desire the life of this world and its splendors, they are given full reward for their deeds therein and shall
not be diminished. They are the ones who will have nothing in the hereafter except hellfire. They shall come to know
that their deeds were fruitless and their actions worthless.” [Surah Hud 11:15-16].
 “Say: If you love Allah, follow me and Allah will love you” - Allah told the Prophet (‫)ﷺ‬ :[Surah al-Imran 3:31]
 “Whoever obeys the Messenger has obeyed Allah”[Surah an-Nisaa 4:80]
Example :
• Some people love money so much, they do not pay zakat properly or they gain their money from unlawful sources
• Some people love their desires - they would follow their desires even when they lead to disobeying Allah
• Many youngsters admire their favorite pop-stars/celebrities/athletes/Video games so much that they immerse
themselves in their world. They start following trends, diet, dress, cosmetic surgeries, hanging their photos…..
• Some parents have extreme blind love for children, so much so that they disobey Allah (swt) – no fasting, salat
• Showing love & respect to the photos/statues of the leaders, pious predecessors, ancestors
4. “Associating in LOVING ALLAH” - to love someone or something else
more than or as much as one loves Allah. Love is a form of worship which
is total surrender of one’s will to God
Sahih al-Bukhari 2766 https://sunnah.com/bukhari:2766 :
Narrated Abu Huraira: The Prophet ‫ﷺ‬
) ) said, "Avoid the SEVEN GREAT
DESTRUCTIVE SINS."
The people enquire, "O Allah's Messenger (‫)ﷺ‬ What are they? "He said,
1. To join others in WORSHIP along with Allah,
2. To practice SORCERY,
3. To KILL the life which Allah has forbidden
4. To eat up RIBA (usury),
5. To eat up an ORPHAN'S WEALTH,
6. To give back to the enemy and fleeing from the battlefield at the time of fighting, and
7. To ACCUSE, CHASTE WOMEN, who never even think of anything touching
chastity and are good believers.
Shirk Al-Akbar (Major Shirk)
4. “Associating in OBEDIENCE” - Obedience to a created being becomes
shirk in situations such as obeying that person in matters where:
 What is forbidden (Haram) is deemed to be allowed (Halal), and vice versa [what is allowed (Halal) are made
forbidden (Haram)], or
 If any rules and regulations, or laws, that go AGAINST the laws of Allah, and
 The follower believes that these laws are more COMPLETE AND BETTER than the laws of Allah, or AS GOOD AS
Allah’s laws, or that the laws of Allah are better but it is PERMISSIBLE to follow these man-made laws
Becoming VEGAN – making lawful things unlawful
 “.. Tell me, what provision Allah has sent down to you! And you have made of it lawful and unlawful. …Has Allah
permitted you (to do so) or do you invent a lie against Allah?” [Surah Yunus 10:59]
 “You who believe, do not forbid the good things Allah has made lawful to you– do not exceed the limits: Allah does not
love those who exceed the limits” [Surah Al-Maidah 5:87]
 “They (HYPOCRITES) say: ‘We have believed in Allah and in the Messenger (‫)ﷺ‬, and we obey,’then a party of them
turn away thereafter, such are NOT BELIEVERS” [al-Noor 24:47]
 Narrated Abu Huraira: The Prophet (‫)ﷺ‬ said, "The signs of a HYPOCRITE are three: Whenever he speaks, he tells a
lie; whenever he is entrusted, he proves dishonest; whenever he promises he breaks his promise.“ Sahih al-Bukhari
2749 https://sunnah.com/bukhari:2749
 “Surely the hypocrites will be in the lowest depths of the Fire—and you will never find for them any helper”[An-Nisa 4:145]
Shirk Al-Akbar (Major Shirk)
4. “Associating in OBEDIENCE” - Prophet said, There is no obedience to a
created being if it is disobedience to Allah Almighty. [Bukhārī 6830, Muslim 1840]
 LEAVING PRAYER IS SHIRK/KUFR
 It was narrated from Anas bin Malik that the Prophet (‫)ﷺ‬ said: “There is nothing standing between a person and Shirk
(polytheism) except leaving the prayer, so if he leaves it he has committed Shirk.” Sunan Ibn Majah 1080
https://sunnah.com/ibnmajah:1080
 It was narrated that Jabir bin ‘Abdullah said: “The Messenger of Allah (‫)ﷺ‬ said: ‘Between a person and Kufr
(disbelief) is abandoning the prayer.’” Sunan Ibn Majah 1078 https://sunnah.com/ibnmajah:1078
 “Then, there has succeeded them a posterity who have given up As-Salat (the prayers) [i.e. made their Salat (prayers)
to be lost, either by not offering them or by not offering them perfectly or by not offering them in their proper fixed
times, etc.] and have followed lusts. So they will be thrown in Hell”. [Surah Maryam 19:59]
 ARROGANCE: A BARRIER TO PARADISE
 It is narrated on the authority of 'Abdullah that the Messenger of Allah (‫)ﷺ‬ observed: “He who has in his heart the
weight of a mustard seed of pride shall not enter Paradise.” Sahih Muslim 91c https://sunnah.com/muslim:91c
 “Your Lord has proclaimed, “Call upon Me, I will respond to you. Surely those who are too proud to worship Me will
enter Hell.” [Surah Al-Gafir 40:60]
 “Enter the gates of Hell, to stay there forever. What an evil home for the arrogant!” [Surah Al-Gafir 40:76] & [Nahl 16:29]
Shirk Al-Akbar (Major Shirk)
4. “Associating in OBEDIENCE” - Prophet said, There is no obedience to a
created being if it is disobedience to Allah Almighty. [Bukhārī 6830, Muslim 1840]
 He is not one of us who CHEATS us. https://sunnah.com/shahwaliullah40:12
 Ayman bin Khuraim narrated that the Prophet (‫)ﷺ‬ stood to give a Khutbah and said: "O you people FALSE
WITNESS is tantamount to Shirk with Allah". Jami` at-Tirmidhi 2299 https://sunnah.com/tirmidhi:2299
 It was narrated that 'Abdullah said: "The Messenger of Allah (‫)ﷺ‬ said: 'DEFAMING A MUSLIM is evildoing and
fighting him is KUFR.’” Sunan an-Nasa'i 4111 https://sunnah.com/nasai:4111
Debts & Interest
 Abu Sa'eed said: "I heard the Messenger of Allah [‫]ﷺ‬ say: I seek refuge with Allah from Kufr and debt.' A man said:
'O Messenger of Allah, are you equating debt with Kufr?' The Messenger of Allah [‫]ﷺ‬ said: 'Yes.’” Sunan an-Nasa'i
5473 https://sunnah.com/nasai:5473
 It has been reported on the authority of 'Amr b. al-'As that the Messenger of Allah (‫)ﷺ‬ said: All the sins of a Shahid
(martyr) are forgiven except debt. Sahih Muslim 1886a https://sunnah.com/muslim:1886a
 “O you who believe! fear Allah and give up what remains of your usury, if you are indeed believers. If you do it not,
take notice of war from Allah and His Messenger.” (al-Baqarah 278-279)
Shirk Al-Akbar (Major Shirk)
• During sickness, doctors & medicine are just means. It’s only Allah, Who can cure.
• Same for any calamities or seeking protection or safety, we have to take the means but completely rely on Allah
• Wearing charms, tabeez, and amulets for protection against the evil eye, bad luck etc. Putting BLACK TIP on
babies. Even hanging verses from Quran in the locket or in the house/car for the purpose of protection.
 'Abdullah ibn Mas'ud reported that the Prophet ((‫))ﷺ‬ said, "Paying attention to the bad omen (tayyara) is association
(shirk). It has nothing to do with us. Allah will remove it by reliance on Him.“ https://sunnah.com/adab:909
 Prophet ((‫))ﷺ‬ said, 'Whoever ties a knot and blows on it, he has practiced MAGIC; and whoever practices magic, he
has committed Shirk; and whoever hangs up something (as an amulet) will be entrusted to it.” Sunan an-Nasa'i 4079
https://sunnah.com/nasai:4079
 The Messenger ((‫))ﷺ‬ led the morning prayer for us at al-Hudaybiyah following rainfall during the night. When the
Prophet finished, he turned to face the people and said to them: “Do you know what your Lord has said?” They said:
“Allah and his Messenger know best.” He said: “This morning one of My slaves became a believer in Me and one a
disbeliever. As for him who said: ‘We have been given rain by the grace of Allah and His mercy,’that one is a believer
in Me, a disbeliever in the stars; and as for him who said: ‘We have been given rain by such-and-such a star, that one
is a disbeliever in Me, a believer in the stars.’ Al-Bukhaari (1038) and Muslim (74)
6. “Associating in RELIANCE” - to rely on someone or something more than
Allah
Shirk Al-Akbar (Major Shirk)
 In a Hadith Qudsi, Allah says: ‘O son of Adam, devote yourself to My worship, and I will fill your heart
with contentment and take care of your poverty; but if you do not do that, then I will fill your heart with
worldly concerns and will not take care of your poverty.” Sunan Ibn Majah 4107
https://sunnah.com/ibnmajah:4107
• Saving money thinking that it will protect us at old age or will provide financial security and protection to
our children.
 “.. Allah alone is enough for me. It is on Him that I rely in all my affairs. it is on Him alone those who want
to place their reliance entrust their affairs to.” [Surah Az-Zumar 38:39]
6. “Associating in RELIANCE” - to rely on someone or something more than
Allah. Relying on Allah is an act of worship of the heart.
Shirk Al-Asgar (Minor Shirk)
Minor shirk causes a deficiency in tawhid; and it is a way to major
shirk and worse than murder or adultery
• Riyya – Showing off - To perform acts which are pleasing to Allah with the intention of pleasing other than Allah.
• Ibn 'Umar (May Allah be pleased with them) said: I heard a man saying: "No, by the Ka'bah." I admonished him:
"DO NOT SWEAR BY ANY THING BESIDES ALLAH, for I heard the Messenger of Allah saying, 'He who swears
by anyone or anything other than Allah, has indeed committed an act of Kufr or Shirk'." [At- Tirmidhi]. Riyad as-
Salihin 1711 https://sunnah.com/riyadussalihin:1711
• Any kind of superstitions or checking luck before making any decisions.
STATEMENTS –
• “Had it not been for the guard, we would have been robbed,” or,
• “Had it not been for the doctor, he would not have been cured,” or
• “If he didn’t go out today, he wouldn’t have the accident,” or
• “If he was taken to the hospital earlier, he would have not died,” or
• “Whatever Allah wills and you will”, or
• “I am trusting in Allah’s help and your help” or “I have no one but Allah and you” or
• “If it were not you, this would have been impossible”.
Allah ’s MERCY =
EARN ALLAH’S PLEASURE
1. DON’T DO SHIRK (seek Allah’s Protection)
• Have SINCERITY, & OBEDIENCE to ALLAH (Taqwa)
2. Do GOOD DEEDS ONLY for ALLAH (Intention matters)
according to the Quran & Sunnah
• Be Good to Others (Ḥusn Al-Khuluq)

The Prophet ‫ﷺ‬ said: “That was Jībreel, who came to teach you your religion.` - Muslim (8) https://sunnah.com/ahmad:191
  • 6. Correct Tawhid with many Sins is better than Shirk and Bidah with many Good Deeds Ibn Taimiyyah (RA)
  • 7. Shirk • Linguistically means partnership, sharing or association. • In Islam, it refers to assigning partners to Allah in whatever form it may take. Tawhid • Linguistically means ‘to make something one’. • In its Islamic usage, it means ‘to testify to the uniqueness and oneness of Allah and • To make all of one’s worship for Allah alone’.

  • 10. “Allah forgives not that partners should be set up with Him; but He forgives anything else, to whom He pleases; to set up partners with Allah is to devise a sin most heinous indeed.” [Surah an-Nisaa’, 4:48] “Verily, Allah forgives not (the sin of) setting up partners (in worship) with Him, but He forgives whom He wills sins other than that. And whoever sets up partners with Allah (in worship), has indeed strayed far away.” [Surah an-Nisaa’, 4:116] “And it was already revealed to you and to those before you that if you should associate [anything] with Allah, your work would surely become worthless, and you would surely be among the losers." [Surah Az-Zumar 39:65] On the authority of Abu Hurayrah (may Allah be pleased with him), who said that the Messenger of Allah ‫ﷺ‬ ) ) said: Allah (glorified and exalted be He) said: I am so self-sufficient that I am in no need of having an associate. Thus he who does an action for someone else's sake as well as Mine will have that action renounced by Me to him whom he associated with Me. It was related by Muslim (also by Ibn Majah). So whoever would hope for the meeting with his Lord - let him do righteous work and not associate in the worship of his Lord with anyone.“ [Surah Al-Kahf 18:110] “Then do not set up rivals unto Allah (in worship) while you know (that He Alone has the right to be worshipped).” [Surah Baqarah 2:22] “Surely whoever associates (others) with Allah, Allah has forbidden to him Paradise and his abode is the Fire.” [Surah Maidah 5:72] Prophet ( ‫ﷺ‬ ) said: “Whoever dies claiming that Allah has a rival, will enter Hell.” [Al-Bukhaari, 4497; Muslim, 92]

(Ahmad 23119) He (‫)ﷺ‬ also said, “Shirk among you is more subtle than the sound of the footsteps of an ant on a rock. Shall I not tell you of something which, if you do it, this DUA will take that away from you both minor and major forms of it”. (Al-Jaami 2876)

  • 21. Shirk in Asmaa wa-Sifaat Shirk by Humanization Shirk by Deification Giving Allah the attributes of his creation • The biblical notion that Allah feels fatigue, so much so that after He created the universe, He needed to take a rest for an entire day! This is refuted in Ayat Al-Kursi. • Hindus and Buddhists worship idols that have the likeness of Asian man or woman and consider them the manifestation of God in creation. • Some Christian painters such as Michaelangelo have drawn God looking like an European man with long white hair and beard and is plastered on the ceiling of the Sistine Chapel in Vatican. Treating a mere mortal or a created being as someone Godly • When out of extreme love & respect – any created being is obsessively praised, blindly followed or being considered as protector or intercessor • A lot of human beings who were considered deities by themselves or by others either during their lifetime or after death (https://religion.wikia.org/wiki/List_of_people_who_have_been_considered_deities) • Saints, dynasty of emperors, power-hungry narcissists, dictators, myth cults, religious reformers, mystery rituals and theologically inspired radicals, cultural heroes,
  • 22. Shirk by Deification - continued…. It is forbidden to use any name which implies enslavement to anything besides Allah, such as: 1. Abd al-Uzza (slave of al-Uzza a pagan goddess) 2. Abd al-Kabah (slave of the Kabah) 3. Abd al-Daar (slave of the House) 4. Abd Ali (slave of Ali) 5. Abd al-Husayn (slave of Husayn) 6. Abd al-Hajar (slave of the stone) 7. It was reported that the Sunnah is to change names such as these. • It is not permissible to call any human being by these names of Allah (swt), according to scholarly consensus, such as: 1. Allaah, 2. al-Rabb (the Lord), 3. ar-Rahmaan (the Most Gracious), 4. al-Ahad (the Unique), 5. as-Samad (the Self-Sufficient Master), 6. al-Mutakabbir (the Majestic), 7. al-Khaaliq (the Creator) 8. al-Razzaaq (the Provider) 9. al-Qaahir (the Subduer) 10. al-Zaahir (the Most High) 11. al-Jabbaar (the Compeller) 12. al-Mutakabbir (the Majestic) 13. al-Awwal (the First) 14. al-Aakhir (the Last) 15. al-Baatin (the Most Near or the Hidden) 16. ‘Allaam al-Ghuyoob (Knower of the unseen) https://islamqa.info/en/114309

  • 24. Shirk in Uloohiyah (Ibadah/Worship) Shirk Al-Akbar (Major Shirk) Any act of worship is directed to other than Allah • The Messenger (‫)ﷺ‬ of Allah, He who dies without associating anyone with Allah would enter Paradise and he who dies associating anything with Allah would enter the Fire of Hell. Sahih Muslim 93a https://sunnah.com/muslim:93a • Major shirk can be divided into six categories: 1. Associating in SUPPLICATION 2. Association in the INTENTION 3. Association in FEAR 4. Association in LOVING ALLAH 5. Association in OBEDIENCE 6. Association in RELIANCE Minor shirk does not expel one from the Religion of Islam, but it causes a deficiency in Tawhid; and it is a way to major Shirk • Ar-Riyaa (showing off) • Statements • Actions Shirk Al-Asgar (Minor Shirk)
  • 25. Shirk Al-Akbar (Major Shirk) Example : • Making dua to Prophet Muhammad ‫ﷺ‬ or to any one • Doing sujood or salat or Quran or asking the dead in the grave • Instead of praying for the dead, assuming all dead people are already in the Heaven/ trying to communicate with them • Going to the Peers/righteous persons for dua • Black magic, fortune teller, astrology, Psychic reading, palmistry • Asking someone else to do the Ruquiyah or to intercede with Allah • Doing Tawaaf other than Kabah • Pledging (sacrificial animal) anything other than Allah • Asking for guidance to someone else • Confessing sins to someone, hoping for forgiveness 1. “Associating in SUPPLICATION (DUA)” - directing one’s supplications to other than Allah as a means of gaining provisions or being cured from a sickness or obtaining help during a crisis or for any other purpose.  “Those whom you invoke other than Allah are creatures like you. So invoke them. and see if they answer your call, if what you claim is true.” (Surah Al-Araf 7:194)  “To Him alone should all supplication be addressed. But those whom they supplicate besides Him do not respond to them in any Way..” (Surah Ar-Rad 13:14)
  • 26. Shirk Al-Akbar (Major Shirk) 2. “Association in the INTENTION” Sahih Muslim 1905a; Hadith 6, 40 Hadith Qudsi - Abu Huraira said: I heard the Messenger of Allah ‫ﷺ‬ ) ) say: • The first of men (whose case) will be decided on the Day of Judgment will be a man who died as a martyr. He shall be brought before the Judgment Seat. Allah will make him recount His blessings (i. e. the blessings which He had bestowed upon him) and he will recount them and admit having enjoyed them in his life. Then will Allah say: What did you do with these blessings? He will say: I fought for until I died as a martyr. Allah will say: You have told a lie. You fought that you might be called a" brave warrior". And you were called so. Then orders will be passed against him, and he will be dragged with his face downward and cast into Hell. • Then will be brought forward a man who acquired knowledge and conveyed it to others and recited the Qur'an. He will be brought, And Allah will make him recount His blessings and he will recount them and admit having enjoyed them in his lifetime. Then will Allah ask: What did you do with these blessings? He will say: I acquired knowledge and spread it and recited the Qur'an seeking the pleasure. Allah will say: You have told a lie. You acquired knowledge so that you might be called" a scholar," and you recited the Qur'an so that it might be said: " He is a Qari" and such has been said. Then orders will be passed against him, and he shall be dragged with his face downward and cast into the Fire. • Then will be brought a man whom Allah had made abundantly rich and had granted every kind of wealth. He will be brought, and Allah will make him recount His blessings and he will recount them and (admit having enjoyed them in his lifetime). Allah will (then) ask: What did you do with these blessings? He will say: I spent money in every cause in which I wished that it should be spent. Allah will say: You are lying. You did (so) that it might be said about (You): "He is a generous fellow" and so it was said. Then will Allah pass orders and he will be dragged with his face downward and thrown into Hell. https://sunnah.com/muslim:1905a ; https://sunnah.com/qudsi40:6
  • 27. Shirk Al-Akbar (Major Shirk) Example : • Not believing in the Divine Decree or Day Of Judgement or in any pillars of Imaan • Intentionally doing sins (riba, cheating, haram) assuming Jannah is guaranteed • Performing any acts of worship to impress people or for worldly gains • Taking part in the worship of non-muslims • Assuming others have powers or knowledge to know about the UNSEEN • When we are granted with any blessings or any calamities are removed, we start thanking or expressing gratitude to other persons instead of Allah (SWT) [by Sujood-Ash-Shukur] • Attributing praises or taking/giving credit for any success or achievement to anyone else other than Allah - denying the fact that Allah alone is the true bestower of blessings and favors • EXCESSIVE PRAISE instills ARROGANCE in one's heart, CORRUPTS one’s intention, makes them OBSESSED about the object of the praise, DISTRACTS them from the focus of the AKHIRA. 2. “Association in the INTENTION” – Continuation….. performing deeds that may be good in themselves, but which are done for the sake of this worldly life and not for the sake of Allah.  “God is pure and good, and He accepts only what is pure and good.” (Saheeh Muslim)  "Actions are according to intentions, and everyone will get what was intended.” – Bukhari & Muslim  Imam Bukhari explains that every action that is done without seeking Allah’s pleasure is invalid and devoid of reward.  “He who lets the people hear of his good deeds intentionally, to win their praise, Allah will let the people know his real intention, and he who does good things in public to show off and win the praise of the people, Allah will disclose his real intention (and humiliate him).” [Al-Bukhari]  “And I do not think the Hour will occur. And even if I should be brought back to my Lord, I will surely find better than this as a return." [Surah Kahf 18:36]
  • 28.
  • 29. Shirk Al-Akbar (Major Shirk)  “Indeed they have a greater fear of you in their hearts than of Allah. That is because they are a people who do not understand.” [Sūrah al-Hashr no.59:13]  And whoever fears Allah, He will make a way for him to get out (from every difficulty), and He will provide him from (sources) he could never imagine.[Sūrah al-Ṭalāq, 65:2,3]  "Allah only accepts from those who fear." [Sūrah al-Māidah 5:27]  “So do not fear people, but fear Me.” [Sūrah al-Māidah, 5:44]  And they threaten you with those (they worship) other than Him.” [Sūrah al-Zumar, 39:36] Example : • Fearing any entity (powerful/influential/Jinn) other than Allah • Preventing family members and kids from going to masjid in fear that they may become extremist and thus not educating much about Islam. • Refraining from keeping muslim name for kids in fear that they might get discriminated or changing muslim names • Taking off Hijab for being bullied as muslim or for not getting married or not able to fit in the crowd • Not praying in public places in fear of people 3. “Association in the FEAR” – Ibn al-Qayyim says, “Fear is worship of the heart, and it is not fitting to be given to others besides Allah, similar to repentance, love, reliance, hope, and other aspects of worship of the heart.” Natural and innate fear is permissible. Those who do not have faith in Allah are vulnerable to many forms of fear. They fear what others will say, what people will think and do. They fear the uncertainties of life, fear of failure, of pain, rejection, etc. and ultimately living in anxiety. They are afraid of the negative emotion that causes anxiety and tightness as they anticipate an unpleasant occurrence.
  • 30. Shirk Al-Akbar (Major Shirk) 3. “Association in the FEAR” Ibn al-Qayim said: "On his way to Allah, a [believer's] heart is likened to a bird: Love is its Head, Fear and Hope are its wings. Hence, when the head and wings are sound, the bird will perfectly fly; if the head is cut, the bird will die and when he loses the wings, he will be inevitably objected to hunting". Even˺ the closest ˹to Allah˺ of those invoked would be seeking a way to their Lord, hoping for His mercy, and fearing His punishment. Indeed, your Lord’s torment is fearsome. [Surah Al-Isra 17:57] As for those who commit evil ignorantly, then repent afterwards and correct themselves, then your Lord is surely All- Forgiving, Most Merciful. [Surah An-Nahl 16:119]
  • 31. Shirk Al-Akbar (Major Shirk)  “There are men who take others besides Allah as equal with Him. They love them as much as they should love Allah. But the believers have more love for Allah.” (Surah Baqarah 2:165)  “Have you not seen the one who takes his desires as his God?”[Surah al-Furqaan 25:43]  “Those who desire the life of this world and its splendors, they are given full reward for their deeds therein and shall not be diminished. They are the ones who will have nothing in the hereafter except hellfire. They shall come to know that their deeds were fruitless and their actions worthless.” [Surah Hud 11:15-16].  “Say: If you love Allah, follow me and Allah will love you” - Allah told the Prophet (‫)ﷺ‬ :[Surah al-Imran 3:31]  “Whoever obeys the Messenger has obeyed Allah”[Surah an-Nisaa 4:80] Example : • Some people love money so much, they do not pay zakat properly or they gain their money from unlawful sources • Some people love their desires - they would follow their desires even when they lead to disobeying Allah • Many youngsters admire their favorite pop-stars/celebrities/athletes/Video games so much that they immerse themselves in their world. They start following trends, diet, dress, cosmetic surgeries, hanging their photos….. • Some parents have extreme blind love for children, so much so that they disobey Allah (swt) – no fasting, salat • Showing love & respect to the photos/statues of the leaders, pious predecessors, ancestors 4. “Associating in LOVING ALLAH” - to love someone or something else more than or as much as one loves Allah. Love is a form of worship which is total surrender of one’s will to God
