When choosing toys and games for children with hydrocephalus or spina bifida, it is important to consider not only what will provide enjoyment, but whether the toy will also help all round development.
Many people with long-term physical difficulties don’t like using the word ‘disabled’ about themselves but it is the word that the government uses to talk about people who have a long-term health problem. If you need to claim Benefits then it may be a ‘Disability’ Benefit or if an employer or a college treat you unfairly then it will ‘Disability’ law that is being broken. So we will carry on using this word here.
As Shine celebrates a golden anniversary, we look at changes and progress in support for members with spina bifida and hydrocephalus, plus other news, views, and the latest on Shine's new specialist health hub.
Vaccines are made from parts of bacteria or viruses that cause infections; when people are vaccinated they will make their own immunity to the specific diseases.

Hydrocephalus comes from the Greek "hydro" meaning water and "cephalie", meaning brain. A watery fluid, known as cerebrospinal fluid or CSF, is produced constantly inside each of the four spaces or ventricles inside the brain: between 400 and 600mls is produced each day.
When a child with hydrocephalus joins a school, the school will need to ascertain what action should be taken in the event that the child has a problem that could be related to his/her hydrocephalus and the parents are unavailable.
Sometimes called Idiopathic Intracranial Hypertension, benign Intracranial Hypertension or Pseudotumour Cerebri is a rare condition which occurs in about 1 or 2 in 100,000 people.
In children, boys and girls are affected equally, but if the onset is in adult life, the majority of cases are seen in women.
The Education Act 1996 Section 312(2) as amended by the SEN and Disability Act 2001 provides the legal definition of learning difficulty. A child has a “learning difficulty” if:
(a) he has a significantly greater difficulty in learning than the majority of children his age,
(b) he has a disability which either prevents or hinders him from making use of educational facilities of a kind generally provided for children of his age in schools within the area of the local authority, or
(c) he is under the age of five and is, or would be, if special educational provision were not made for him, likely to fall within paragraph (a) or (b) when of or over that age.
We believe one thing - that together we create our community.
Our aim is simple: to globally bring people, businesses and charities together and help provide access to discrete volunteering opportunities with existing charitable and volunteer organisations and where people can volunteer with their friends. In short, helping make volunteering an easy, fun and social activity. These sorts of activities could support anything from child cancer research, to the local tennis club, to environmental causes, to efforts to assist the underprivileged etc etc. They are all important and they all make a difference!
Since our inception in September 2012 we have grown to have 21 Chapters in 8 countries and thus our growth has been significant but are just the first steps towards realising our vision of making volunteering a global norm!

2024.06.01 Introducing a competency framework for languag learning materials ...Sandy Millin
http://sandymillin.wordpress.com/iateflwebinar2024
Published classroom materials form the basis of syllabuses, drive teacher professional development, and have a potentially huge influence on learners, teachers and education systems. All teachers also create their own materials, whether a few sentences on a blackboard, a highly-structured fully-realised online course, or anything in between. Despite this, the knowledge and skills needed to create effective language learning materials are rarely part of teacher training, and are mostly learnt by trial and error.
Knowledge and skills frameworks, generally called competency frameworks, for ELT teachers, trainers and managers have existed for a few years now. However, until I created one for my MA dissertation, there wasn’t one drawing together what we need to know and do to be able to effectively produce language learning materials.
This webinar will introduce you to my framework, highlighting the key competencies I identified from my research. It will also show how anybody involved in language teaching (any language, not just English!), teacher training, managing schools or developing language learning materials can benefit from using the framework.
The French Revolution, which began in 1789, was a period of radical social and political upheaval in France. It marked the decline of absolute monarchies, the rise of secular and democratic republics, and the eventual rise of Napoleon Bonaparte. This revolutionary period is crucial in understanding the transition from feudalism to modernity in Europe.

A Strategic Approach: GenAI in EducationPeter Windle
Artificial Intelligence (AI) technologies such as Generative AI, Image Generators and Large Language Models have had a dramatic impact on teaching, learning and assessment over the past 18 months. The most immediate threat AI posed was to Academic Integrity with Higher Education Institutes (HEIs) focusing their efforts on combating the use of GenAI in assessment. Guidelines were developed for staff and students, policies put in place too. Innovative educators have forged paths in the use of Generative AI for teaching, learning and assessments leading to pockets of transformation springing up across HEIs, often with little or no top-down guidance, support or direction.
This Gasta posits a strategic approach to integrating AI into HEIs to prepare staff, students and the curriculum for an evolving world and workplace. We will highlight the advantages of working with these technologies beyond the realm of teaching, learning and assessment by considering prompt engineering skills, industry impact, curriculum changes, and the need for staff upskilling. In contrast, not engaging strategically with Generative AI poses risks, including falling behind peers, missed opportunities and failing to ensure our graduates remain employable. The rapid evolution of AI technologies necessitates a proactive and strategic approach if we are to remain relevant.

Born with spina bifida ...
Every day in the UK, at least two of the babies conceived will develop Neural Tube Defects
(NTDs) like spina bifida. Most babies born with spina bifida will also have hydrocephalus,
which results in brain injury.

Spina bifida
The spinal cord does
not form properly,
leaving a gap or split
What is spina bifida?
Spina bifida literally means ‘split spine’.
Most babies with spina bifida will undergo spinal
surgery within 24 hours of birth. They may need
over 20 more operations before they are 18 years
old.
Spina bifida usually causes paralysis and loss of
sensation below the ‘split’ in the spine. This leads
to lifelong incontinence and reduced mobility.
Children with spina bifida may use a wheelchair
from just 3 years old.
‘Kids like my daughter spend a lot of time in hospital. I think to a degree
they are robbed of their childhoods.’

Hydrocephalus – the hidden
disability
What is hydrocephalus?
Hydrocephalus is a build up of fluid in
the brain causing increased pressure.
The usual treatment for hydrocephalus
is to insert a shunt into the brain.
The shunt drains excess fluid into the
bloodstream via tubes with a valve to
control the pressure. The shunt is not a
‘cure’, but it prevents it getting worse.
Scott Nielsen,18 years old, has hydrocephalus and
had 20 major operations before the age of 15. In
2011 Scott cycled 2,000 km across Europe to
fundraise for Shine.
Hydrocephalus can cause many
challenges in everyday life including
learning difficulties, memory and sight
problems, headaches, and sleep
disturbance.
‘Having hydrocephalus is like having a jigsaw with a piece missing’.
‘Shine answered the questions I had about my
condition. They carried on explaining when the
doctors stopped.
I wish I knew then what I know now. I think all the
new ideas are great. I think Benny Bear is great for
the kids. The London group is great too. I have made
good friends and look forward to meeting up.
It’s important to me to be part of Shine and its
future. I want Shine to give people like me a voice
and in order to do so they have to be listening to me.’
Brian Treadwell
‘As a neurosurgeon, I can appreciate what Shine’s support means
to families. It is a privilege to be involved with this charity – its work
is urgent, uplifting and life-changing.’
