Hydrocephalus comes from the Greek "hydro" meaning water and "cephalie", meaning brain. A watery fluid, known as cerebrospinal fluid or CSF, is produced constantly inside each of the four spaces or ventricles inside the brain: between 400 and 600mls is produced each day.
In the seventh edition of Together magazine, weʼve packed as much news, information, features, and events as possible! There’s the regular features including Gobiʼs Gossip, Gill Yazʼs health column, Mike Berginʼs feedback back on all the SAMC activity, and we welcome Emma Enfieldʼs new spot which focuses on occupational therapy.
When choosing toys and games for children with hydrocephalus or spina bifida, it is important to consider not only what will provide enjoyment, but whether the toy will also help all round development.

(b) he has a disability which either prevents or hinders him from making use of educational facilities of a kind generally provided for children of his age in schools within the area of the local authority, or
(c) he is under the age of five and is, or would be, if special educational provision were not made for him, likely to fall within paragraph (a) or (b) when of or over that age.

A much-quoted aphorism in medicine is “Listen to your patient and they are telling you the diagnosis”. Most often, the history reveals the diagnosis and sometimes, it is all that is required to make the diagnosis. Unfortunately, in this age of modern technology-based medicine, many busy clinicians fail to get a proper history and miss important dots in the history that connect to the diagnosis. This is clinically relevant, as a specific diagnosis completely alters the nature of treatment and thereby improves prognosis.
Guidelines Issued for Childcare Providers for Coronavirus Pandemic | Paper Pi...Paper Pinecone
The purpose of the guideline is to prevent the spread of COVID-19 among child care facilities, families, and communities. If local public health officials informed that there are cases of COVID-19 in the community, child care centers may need to take additional steps in the way to prevent the spread in the community.
Paper Pinecone is leading early childcare service providers that provide a platform for parents to connect preschools providers free of coast. We also cater to early childcare education, baby daycare activities, childcare product information, and blogs.

MBA (Virtual University of Pakistan)
Learning Objectives:
Describe the structure and function of taste buds.
Describe the relationship between the taste threshold and taste index of common substances.
Explain the chemical basis and signal transduction of taste perception for each type of primary taste sensation.
Recognize different abnormalities of taste perception and their causes.
Key Topics:
Significance of Taste Sensation:
Differentiation between pleasant and harmful food
Influence on behavior
Selection of food based on metabolic needs
Receptors of Taste:
Taste buds on the tongue
Influence of sense of smell, texture of food, and pain stimulation (e.g., by pepper)
Primary and Secondary Taste Sensations:
Primary taste sensations: Sweet, Sour, Salty, Bitter, Umami
Chemical basis and signal transduction mechanisms for each taste
Taste Threshold and Index:
Taste threshold values for Sweet (sucrose), Salty (NaCl), Sour (HCl), and Bitter (Quinine)
Taste index relationship: Inversely proportional to taste threshold
Taste Blindness:
Inability to taste certain substances, particularly thiourea compounds
Example: Phenylthiocarbamide
Structure and Function of Taste Buds:
Composition: Epithelial cells, Sustentacular/Supporting cells, Taste cells, Basal cells
Features: Taste pores, Taste hairs/microvilli, and Taste nerve fibers
Location of Taste Buds:
Found in papillae of the tongue (Fungiform, Circumvallate, Foliate)
Also present on the palate, tonsillar pillars, epiglottis, and proximal esophagus
Mechanism of Taste Stimulation:
Interaction of taste substances with receptors on microvilli
Signal transduction pathways for Umami, Sweet, Bitter, Sour, and Salty tastes
Taste Sensitivity and Adaptation:
Decrease in sensitivity with age

Shunt Malfunction
A protocol to symptoms & suggested action for schools/employers
When a child with hydrocephalus joins a school, the school
will need to ascertain what action should be taken in the
event that the child has a problem that could be related
to his/her hydrocephalus and the parents are unavailable.
The preferences of neurosurgeons vary with each hospital
unit – some like the child to be transported direct to the
neurosurgical unit, others prefer the child to be assessed at
a local A&E department first.
Signs of acute shunt malfunction or blockage may include:
vomiting or nausea abdominal pain
photophobia (sensitivity to light) + other visual disturbances
drowsiness seizures (fits)
headache dizziness
If a child with a shunt (or who has had hydrocephalus treated by 3rd
ventriculostomy) displays all or some of the above THINK SHUNT
2. Shunt Malfunction
A protocol to symptoms & suggested action for schools/employers
ACTION
1) Inform parents
2) If parents are unavailable ask child for his/her shunt alert card & look for
name of neurosurgeon. Phone neurosurgical unit & speak to Ward Sister
or Neurosurgical Registrar. Please do NOT leave message with ward clerk
or junior
3) It may be necessary to arrange transport to a neurosurgical unit. In
some areas, the policy is for the child to be assessed at a local hospital.
IF A CHILD DEVELOPS SYMPTOMS OF A
SHUNT BLOCKAGE (OR MALFUNCTION OF 3RD
VENTRICULOSTOMY) YOU NEED TO CONTACT THEIR
SPECIALIST NEUROSURGICAL UNIT
WITHIN 4 HOURS
OF ACUTE SYMPTOMS DEVELOPING, FOR ADVICE
3. Shunt malfunction may present as a chronic condition (ie over some time
- weeks or even months)
If a child with hydrocephalus presents with:
fatigue behaviour changes
general malaise decline in academic performance
visuo-perceptual problems
being just ‘not right’
THE PARENTS NEED TO BE INFORMED
Do not assume that someone else will tell them or that they will
necessarily notice “vague” symptoms
It is especially important that children with hydrocephalus have access to
clear fluids particularly if the weather is hot, the classroom is overheated,
or after exercise. Clear fluids can include water or squash, but not ‘coke’
or any drink containing caffeine
