Community Garden Project Planned for South Amboy YMCA (The Suburban)
A community garden project is being planned at the South Amboy YMCA through a partnership with the South Amboy Community Garden group. A $1,761 grant from Stop & Shop will be combined with donations from local businesses to create a rainbow vegetable garden at the YMCA with different colored vegetables that provide nutritional value. The garden will involve participation from YMCA youth and seniors and aim to be a cross-generational project. Produce from the garden will be donated to senior residents at a local manor.

The cost to install a system is $15,000-$18,000 and it can pump over 20,000 liters of water per day.

Officials in Cincinnati are looking to convert 87 small plots of vacant city-owned land into urban mini-farms to help residents grow their own food and improve neighborhoods. The city council approved a plan to create a pilot program of 10-15 mini-farms this spring. The motivation for the first week field stay was to achieve my learning goals along with an opportunity to get exposure of the village life, learn various sub systems in the village, their livelihoods patterns and their inter-relations. In the second week, I understood the realty of village lifestyle and learn many things with the interaction of female. Sometimes I was think that how village people are not much aware for their rights and daily activities in the home but staying two week with villagers, I could understood that what is the reason. They have limited resource like water, land, finance, knowledge etc. but they manage everything in this.

The floods in Pakistan in 2010 affected 18 million people, destroying homes, infrastructure, and livelihoods. Over the past two years, aid organizations worked to provide emergency relief through food, water, and shelter. Long-term efforts focused on rebuilding communities by constructing new homes, cleaning schools, rebuilding infrastructure, and providing cash-for-work programs. Support now aims to help vulnerable groups become self-sufficient again through activities like giving women goats to breed and sell or ensuring disabled people can live independently.
Historic Westside Gardens
Volunteers from the 2008 presidential campaign stayed in the community after to identify challenges. They determined urban agriculture could empower residents by providing wealth, health, and purpose. In 2009, they founded Historic Westside Gardens (HWG) to establish training programs and gardens. In 2010, HWG obtained a grant to train 10 unemployed residents in urban agriculture over 10 weeks. They celebrated the graduates' success and presented a vision for expanding local food production. However, establishing farming as a business proved difficult for the graduates. HWG refocused on its core mission of using agriculture to help residents change their lives.
Knoxville Volunteer Emergency Rescue Squad, Inc.
The Knoxville Volunteer Emergency Rescue Squad (KVERS) was established in 1958 by 10 men with a $250 donation. Now 55 years later, KVERS has over 140 volunteers providing specialized rescue services like vehicle extrication, cave/vertical rescues, and water rescues to Knoxville and surrounding counties. "Does Foreign Direct Investment Negatively Affect Preservation of Culture in the Global South? Case Studies in Thailand and Cambodia."
Do elements of globalization, such as Foreign Direct Investment (FDI), negatively affect the ability of countries in the Global South to preserve their culture? This research aims to answer this question by employing a cross-sectional comparative case study analysis utilizing methods of difference. Thailand and Cambodia are compared as they are in the same region and have a similar culture. The metric of difference between Thailand and Cambodia is their ability to preserve their culture. This ability is operationalized by their respective attitudes towards FDI; Thailand imposes stringent regulations and limitations on FDI while Cambodia does not hesitate to accept most FDI and imposes fewer limitations. The evidence from this study suggests that FDI from globally influential countries with high gross domestic products (GDPs) (e.g. China, U.S.) challenges the ability of countries with lower GDPs (e.g. Cambodia) to protect their culture. Furthermore, the ability, or lack thereof, of the receiving countries to protect their culture is amplified by the existence and implementation of restrictive FDI policies imposed by their governments.
My study abroad in Bali, Indonesia, inspired this research topic as I noticed how globalization is changing the culture of its people. I learned their language and way of life which helped me understand the beauty and importance of cultural preservation. I believe we could all benefit from learning new perspectives as they could help us ideate solutions to contemporary issues and empathize with others.
