This study analyzed the impact of abrupt dryness incidents on forest productivity at two forest sites in Switzerland over a period of 17-23 years. The researchers found that forest net ecosystem productivity (NEP) decreased by around 9-10% during periods of abrupt dryness compared to normal weather conditions. Additionally, the sub-alpine coniferous forest site showed higher resistance to abrupt dryness than the montane mixed forest site. An analysis of weather data across Europe from 1970 to 2020 found that occurrences of sudden weather changes have increased over the last 50 years.
